"South African-born"

[edit]

Is it necessary for this to be in the first sentence? Compare with the Wikipedia page on Sandy Lyle, which simply identifies him as a "Scottish golfer", not an "English-born Scottish golfer." Shiresman (talk) 18:13, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I daresay South Africans would think it's important. His birthplace does come up, eg when Kevin Pietersen was rowing with Jack Wilshire about who should be entitled to play for England (Pietersen specifically cited Rose). Rose is no different from KP in that regard - SA-born, English heritage. (KP is also described, in the first sentence of his Wikipedia page, as a South African-born English cricketer. The only difference between them is the accent.) On the subject, though, Rose's "nationality" is described as English. Surely nationality is defined by your passport? (British, in Rose's case.) That's my understanding of it, though I'm not certain. Brooklyn Eagle (talk) 00:28, 12 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Olympic Medals

[edit]

This comment refers to all eleven pro golfers who have won Olympic Medals since golf's return in 2016. Why do we hide the Medal portion in the infobox? It seems like that should be prominent. I read through CT Pan's article and then wondered why I hadn't noticed his Olympic Medal, which was due to it being hidden. Had I not known he had won one, I wouldn't have likely even noticed it in a quick read. I realize pro golfers have very long infoboxes already, but so do Tennis players, and theirs are not hidden.Raszoo (talk)

The issue is that generally "medals" won by golfers are not that significant in their career. Mostly they are at an amateur level and their performances as a professional are much more significant, eg Rashid Khan (golfer). Because of this, the medals are hidden by default. However see Rahul Bajaj (golfer) where someone has added the "|show-medals=yes" to the infobox to change this default. I wouldn't be against "showing" the medals of a few more golfers, but we need to be sure that these medals really are highly significant in their careers, otherwise we're just cluttering up the infobox with unimportant information.
