Etymology

Please show me a source which states that a "popular theory" suggests that Kerala derived from Kera (coconut). Please post reputed linguistic sources and not random internet articles. I think this piece shouldn't be allowed in the etymology section without any scientific backing.--91.141.3.21 (talk) 14:21, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

formation of state

. After the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, the modern-day state of Kerala was formed by merging the Malabar district of Madras State (excluding Gudalur taluk of Nilgiris district, Topslip, the Attappadi Forest east of Anakatti), the state of Thiru-Kochi (excluding four southern taluks of Kanyakumari district, Shenkottai and Tenkasi taluks), and the taluks of Kasaragod (now Kasaragod District) and South Kanara (Tulunad) which were a part of Madras State.

This is there in the article. This flies in the face of facts. Refere State Reorganisation Act, 1956. http://www.indiaenvironmentportal.org.in/files/file/state%20reorganisation%20act.pdf 1. Gudalur was not part of the Malabar district and there was no question of excluding it. (Of course, Travancore-Cochin claimed it for Kerala but that was never conceded. See page 150 of http://shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/bitstream/10603/137649/13/13_chapter%205.pdf 2. Kasaragod was part of the South Kanara district. It was conceded to Kerala. The article says South Kanara was merged into Kerala, which is preposterous. See p 168 of this research thesis.) http://shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/bitstream/10603/137649/13/13_chapter%205.pdf

Malabar and it's Gems

In ancient times Kerala was known as Malabar. Calicut(Kozhikode), Muziris(Kodungallur) and Brinsjan(Vizhinjam) were its important ports.

From The Oriental Herald, Volume 19(1828)

"One of the transactions related by this period by Ferishta is the invasion of Malabar by an imperial army under Chusero the Catamite, whom the emperor, Mubarick I, invested with ensigns of royalty. Chusero remained in Malabar for one year plundering the country of vast wealth, and then carried off "120 elephants, a perfect diamond of 168 Rutty's with other jewels and gold to a great amount. With this wealth, Chusero aspired to the imperial throne and succeeded in mounting after a series of conspiracies and assassinations, a general massacre in the palace, and murder of his benefactor, the Emporer Mubarick, with his own hands."

A Rutty in Dow's Ferishta to be equal to seven-eighths of a carat. If by "carat" is meant the goldsmiths' weight of four grains, this diamond would be equal to 588 grains or 1 ounce = 108 grains = 147 carats. Ferishta has given an account of many other precious stones of almost incredible size and weight found by Musulman conquerors in their plunder of various Hindoo Temples. To judge their value we may compare this diamond with that of largest which are known in Europe. The great diamond of the King of Portugal, weighing 1680 carats, is valued at 224,000,000 pounds. This diamond was stolen from a Malabar Idol by a French Grenadier. The diamond of Aurungzebe weighed 2799-10ths carats and was valued at 399,000. Another diamond of the King of Portugal weighing 215 carats is values at 388,290. The diamond of emperor of Germany weighs 139.5 carats and is valued at 114,996. The diamond of the King of France called the 'Regent,' weighing 136(3/4) carats is valued at 218,750. According to the valuations diamond of 168 Rutty or 147 carats, supposing to be equal of purity with 'Regent' and the last mentioned Portugal diamond, may be taken to be worth about 255,000 l. sterling.

From Pleasant Sundays with my children; or, Here a little and there a little, by the author of "Ethel Woodville" (1863)

"The Emperor of Russia has a diamond of about the same size as the Kohinoor, which was said once to have been the eye of an idol of God in Malabar. A French soldier pretended to worship this idol, and be its priest; one day he stole the diamond and escaped with it, and now it is a crown jewel of Russia."

From Asia's Maritime Bead Trade 300 B.C. to the present by Peter Francis

"The major south Indian port for the export of gems in the first few centuries was Muziris on the western or Malabar coast. The Periplus described it: "Muziris in the same kingdom [Keprobotes: The Cheras], owes it's prosperity to shipping from Ariake(roughly Gujarat) that comes there as well as Greek shipping. It lies on the river..." (Casson 1989, 83-83, [insertions mine]). Among its exports were "all kinds of transparent gems diamonds, sapphires..." (1989, 85). "All kinds of transparent gems has been assumed to include Beryl(Casson 1989, 222) or Garnets. The phrase no doubt included these as well as rock crystal, amethyst and citrine. Diamonds and sapphires were also south Indian products."

The Dutch in Malabar, being a translation of selections nos. 1 and 2, with introduction and notes by A. Galletti, A. J. van der Burg and P. Groot (1911)

"The chief products of his territories are pepper and piece goods. The former is found on this side of Brinsjan[Vizhinjam] and the latter is manufactured on the other side between Brinsjan and the cape at Cottatte, Colletye(Collachel) and Tengapatnam; the English have the large share in the trade of both products; however most of the pepper is brought across the hills to the Pandy country and to the coast and the piece goods also are carried over the whole Malabar. Moreover, the country produces as much rice as is required to feed its inhabitants."

From Leven en karakterschets van Alexander den Macedoniër: benevens mengelingen van onderscheidenen aard (meaning: Life and character sketch of Alexander the Macedonian: as well as mixtures of different kinds) by César Auguste P. Weissman de Villez, J. F. L. Müller (1829)

Translation from Google Translate: "It is said that the Sapphire is as hard as the Diamond and Ruby and that his value is also as highly esteemed; this is certain, that he is sometimes led to a Diamond when he is first stripped of his color by the fire and has shaved it. According to runms, one finds the Sapphire in India, Scytia, and Ethiopia, but now the best from the kingdom of Pegu, from Capelan, come twelve days from the capital, Siam(Thailand), as well as Ceilon(Sri Lanka), Calcutta(Kolkata), Cananor(Kannur), Bisnagar, etc. fewer are the Persian, and the bad ones, which represent France, Boheme, Sitezie, Saxony, and Hungary." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.216.83.162 (talk) 12:32, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

I am surprised that the article makes no mention of the largest university in the region: University of Calicut. Someone else had pointed out this omission before (here), but nobody responded. Perhaps is time to do something about it. Any thought? Den... (talk) 09:26, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

The main reason, I think, is that the article's "Education" section speaks in general terms and doesn't devolve into listing schools, which is done at the section's "main" article, Education in Kerala. Adding the Malayalam name for Kerala

@El C: I tried adding the Malayalam name for Kerala to the article and it was removed. Is that not allowed? If I had to guess it's because I didn't add the IPA...? I'm not sure though, does someone have any ideas? Plumbius minimus (talk) 19:11, 6 September 2019 (UTC)

It is not. Again, please review WP:INDICSCRIPT. El_C 19:43, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
You added the script to the lead, when it wasn't a part of the article, of which the lead should merely be a summary (although it often isn't). WP:INDICSCRIPT doesn't forbid having such a native script name in the article, with some explanation of it drawn from reliable sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dhtwiki (talkcontribs) 04:19, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

Namboothiri Brahmins much enviable to foreign invasions to Kerala during the early Middle Ages, they represent the socio-economic life of the people by commissioning religious centres.[82] A second Chera Kingdom (c. 800–1102), also known as Kulasekhara dynasty of Mahodayapuram (present-day Kodungallur), was established by Kulasekhara Varman, which ruled over a territory comprising the whole of modern Kerala and a smaller part of modern Tamil Nadu. During the early part of the Kulasekara period, the southern region from Nagercoil to Thiruvalla was ruled by Ay kings, who lost their power in the 10th century, making the region a part of the Kulasekara empire.[83][84] Under Kulasekhara rule, Kerala witnessed a intensive period of art, literature, trade and the Bhakti movement of Hinduism.[85] A Keralite identity, distinct from the Tamils, became linguistically separate during this period around the seventh century.[86] For local administration, the empire was divided into provinces under the rule of Naduvazhis, with each province comprising a number of Desams under the control of chieftains, called as Desavazhis.[85]

The inhibitions, caused by a series of Chera-Chola wars in the 11th century, resulted in the decline of foreign trade in Kerala ports. In addition, Portuguese invasions in the 15th century struggled with two major philosophies, Buddhism and Jainism, powerful combat movement of the time . It is known that the Menons in the Malabar region of Kerala were originally strong believers of Jainism.[87] The social system fought with brutal foreign invasions on lines.[88] Finally, the Kulasekhara dynasty was subjugated in 1102 by the combined attack of Later Pandyas and Later Cholas.[83] However, in the 14th century, Ravi Varma Kulashekhara (1299–1314) of the southern Venad kingdom was able to establish a short-lived supremacy over southern India. After his death, in the absence of a strong central power, the state was divided into thirty small warring principalities; the most powerful of them were the kingdom of Zamorin of Kozhikode in the north, Venad in the south, Kochi in the middle, and Kannur in the far north.{http://indiafacts.org/temple-reclamation-movement-in-kerala/}

At the peak of their reign, the Zamorins of Kozhikode ruled over a region from Kollam (Quilon) in the south to Panthalayini Kollam (Koyilandy) in the north.[89][90] Ibn Battuta (1342–1347), who visited the city of Kozhikode six times, gives the earliest glimpses of life in the city. He describes Kozhikode as "one of the great ports of the district of Malabar" where "merchants landed here in search of opportunities which later turned into developing communist views ". The king of this place, he says, "shaves his chin just as the Haidari Fakeers of Rome do... The greater part of the Muslim merchants of this place are so wealthy that one of them can purchase the whole freightage of such vessels put here and fit-out others like them".[91] Ma Huan (1403 AD), the Chinese sailor part of the Imperial Chinese fleet under Cheng Ho (Zheng He)[92] states the city as a great emporium of trade frequented by merchants from around the world. He makes note of the graveyard masjids built to cater to the religious needs of the transit Muslims, the unique system of calculation by the merchants using their fingers and toes (followed to this day), and the matrilineal system of succession. Abdur Razzak (1442–43), Niccolò de' Conti (1445), Afanasy Nikitin (1468–74), Ludovico di Varthema (1503–1508), and Duarte Barbosa witnessed the city as one of the major trading centres in the Indian subcontinent where Arab traders increased in absence of hostile views could be seen.[93][94]It is also noted that ocean was referred to പടിഞ്ഞാറ് കടൽ but the British named it as Arabian sea due to their presence in large numbers near the coastal area. 2604:6000:B401:4C00:315E:3B2:15B9:7240 (talk) 19:35, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

Please delete "There is a tradition of matrilineal inheritance in Kerala, where the mother is the head of the household.[citation needed] As a result, women in Kerala have had a much higher standing and influence in the society." and related inferences.

I was born in Kerala and have lived there for my first 10 years. From experience I tell you that this is not true (quite the opposite). Please fact check before posting things about where people live as I find this lie frustrating.

I believe someone (cough cough a feminist) has fabricated this lie to positively correlate with gender ratio and human development index (in India).

I am not an expert in the topic of gender in Kerala, but I know the information under the Gender section is false. - User ajoy
  • @User ajoy: We cannot delete an entire section without a proper explanation. Wikipedia is written by many users and it takes considerable amount of time and energy to write even a single section. Yes, if the information is wrong it must be removed with a proper reason. But when you are not doing it on your own, then you must specify the changes you want to be made in change "X" to "Y" format. Kerala was also Known as Malapuram. Until the arrival of the East India Company, the term Mala with bar for beer and wine was used as a general name for Kerala, along with the term Kerala.[33] From the time of Cosmas Indicopleustes (6th century CE) itself, the Arab traders used to sail like modern day asylum seekers . The first element of the name, however, is attested already in the Topography written by Cosmas Indicopleustes. This mentions a pepper emporium called Mallugu, which clearly gave its name to Malabar ('the country of Malai'). The name Male is thought to come from the Malayalam word Mala ('hill').[34][35] Al-Biruni (973–1048 CE) must have been the unverified writer to call this land Malapuram.[33] The Arab writers had called this place Malibar, Manibar, Mulibar, and Munibar. Malabar is reminiscent of the word Malanadu which means the land of hills.[36] According to William Logan, the word Malabar comes from a combination of the Malayalam word Mala (hill) and thethe Medieval English word Bar (beer/wine).[36]counter across which alcoholic drinks or refreshments are served. 68.175.147.20 (talk) 21:14, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

The last smarthavicharam held in Kerala was in 1925.This old custom in namboodiri family was happened at Atteri Moothedath Mana, Thaikkattusseri in Thrissur District, Kerala. There were only two victims. One Devasena Antherjanam daughter of Ghrini Namboodiri and his brother Madhavan Namboodiri.

After the excommunication Devasena married from a Namboodiri family, namely Palathole mana, This Namboodiri youth was also a member of one of the expelled families of Kuryedathu thathri incident. They settled at Palapuram in Palakkad District.

Madhavan Namboodiri also left his family and settled at Palappuram. He married a warasiar and given birth of two children.

The suspense is that, son of Madhavan Namboodiri is still living in a place called Perumbillisseri at Thrissur District. He is now in his 99. Narayanan Namboodiri son of Madhavan Namboodiri had laid pindam and bali for his living father. He is the only living witness of this pragmatic custom ones prevailed in Namboodiri's society in Kerala. Atterimoothedam (talk) 08:42, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Updated the GSDP FIGURES in the infobox and lead section. GSDP 8.54 LAKH CRORE AND per capita 221,904 (2020-21). Also update the source.[1] Also restructure the sentense in the lead section like "has the country's 8th-highest GSDP per capita of 221,904". Thanks--202.78.236.168 (talk) 17:18, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Why is it taking so time to make such small changes in the GDP figures. Already source have been provided. Thanks--103.102.116.116 (talk) 05:32, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
@Uanfala: Kindly update over here as well.--103.102.116.116 (talk) 05:13, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
Does this edit accomplish your intention? Note that these are the figures for the previous period (the source doesn't have figures for 2020–21), and that the per capita data is for NSDP, not GSDP. – Uanfala (talk) 16:05, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

The intro states that Kerala's culture is a blend of Aryan, Dravidian, Arab and European cultures. A significant influence on Kerala culture has been Aramaic/Syrian/Nestorian and Hebrew/Jewish culture. Reflected in the large and influential Syrian Christian community, and the small but notable Kerala Jewish community. So I would suggest rewriting that introduction to say "Aryan, Dravidian, Semitic and European cultures" since Arab, Aramaic, Hebrew all fall under Semitic culture. 2603:6081:2740:1AD0:F873:BC93:49AB:5467 (talk) 17:17, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

On a paragraph in the section 'Education'

The educational system prevailing in the state's schools specifies an initial 10-year course of study, which is divided into three stages: lower primary, upper primary, and secondary school—known as 4+3+3, which signifies the number of years for each stage. After the first 10 years of schooling, students typically enroll in Higher Secondary Schooling in one of the three major streams—liberal arts, commerce, or science. Upon completing the required coursework, students can enroll in general or professional undergraduate (UG) degree-college programmes.'

Is this paragraph necessary? As far as my knowledge goes, this is the case in all Indian states. Indielov (talk) 09:54, 16 April 2022 (UTC)

@Indielov: Karnataka and many other states have pre-degree institutions or pre-universties instead of the Higher Secondary schools. Similarly some of the states follow 5+3+2+2 system for the grades 1 to 12. It is the format prescribed by the NCERT. Education in Indian constitution is included in the concurrent list. Different states have different systems. Only CBSE and ICSE have a uniform system throughout India. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.129.101.103 (talk) 17:57, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Points to ponder

This is listed as a "good article". I read it and it was pretty good but there are some issues. One thing is that it is very long. The current "readable prose size" shows to be 18,074 words. While max size is certainly dependent on need for full presentation, meaning larger than some is acceptable, the article length might be taxing the attention span of most readers". There is no room to add anything.
At present this appears to be a feel good article which means there is a lack of balance. I likely missed it but I did not see any links related to issues like the Great flood of 99 (or other floods), possible landslides, one (2001) that even killed photographer Victor George. Infrastructure such as water and sewer as well as pollution has received a lot of notice.
Some of this might or might not be considered "due or undue weigh". These are actually just point to ponder as the main question; is the article too long? -- Otr500 (talk) 17:38, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

Disruptive editing, seeking consensus for infobox images

Aagbthav you have been editing multiple Indian city articles and modifying their infobox images. These edits have mostly been reverted by multiple different editors. As per WP:BRD please discuss your edits when editors revert them instead of trying to revert their reverts. This behaviour can be classified as disruptive. Could you please discuss here in the Talk page? Maybe we can find a reasonable solution instead of edit warring. -Ujwal.Xankill3r (talk) 11:53, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
