The Seven Souls of Clement O'Reilly[edit]

So far I haven't been able to find out anything about this story, if it, in fact, exists. It is what ibdb credits as one of the sources for the libretto of Carnival! Another editor has suggested that this is simply a mistake, and that the correct origin is "The Man Who Hated People." I have a copy of this story now and will be writing something about it eventually; it certainly is a version of the Lili story.

But did Gallico write another story on this theme, under the title "The Seven Souls of Clement O'Reilly?"

Any information on this would be welcome.

It would also be nice to understand what material Helen Deutsch was adapting. Did she start with "Love of Seven Dolls" or something similar, or did Gallico actually write a considerably-changed dark-toned adaptation of the story after the screenplay was in progress? Certainly the mood of Lili is closer to "The Man Who Hated People" than to "Love of Seven Dolls." Dpbsmith (talk) 14:14, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you Google "The Seven Souls of Clement O'Reilly", you will find that it was an early title for the movie that turned out to be "Lili". There are press announcements that it will star Fernando Lamas and Pier Angeli. What seems quite likely to me is that TSSOCOR is Gallico's first, unpublished adaptation of his "The Man Who Hated People" short story. Helen Deutsch adapted TSSOCOR into "Lili", and Gallico further adapted TSSOCOR into "Love of Seven Dolls". This perfectly explains the clearly non-coincidental elements shared by "Lili" and LOSD that do not derive directly from TMWHP. And how "Lili" can seem to be inspired by a novella that was published the year after the movie premiered.

So: Gallico wrote "The Man Who Hated People". He then adapted that into "The Seven Souls of Clement O'Reilly". This unpublished story was adapted by Helen Deutsch into "Lili", and by Gallico himself into "Love of Seven Dolls". And finally, "Carnival" was adapted from "Lili". That's my theory. "Influence"[edit]

I have removed the section entitled Influence as it did not concern, as one might expect, this film's influence on subsequent films, but merely the reactions of Audrey Hepburn and John Waters to the movie. The Lili advert

"An early instance[citation needed] of using text characters to represent a sideways smiling (and frowning) face occurred in an advertisement for Lili in the New York Herald Tribune, March 10, 1953, pg. 20, cols. 4-6. (See Emoticon.)"

The attached picture contains a smiley face, but it is not textual (or sideways) and not an emoticon.

– Not primary over all topics reasonably sought by searching "Lili", including many people by that name. While the film gets a healthy number of pageviews (about 100/day – Hurricane Lili gets half that), Google Scholar and Books searches for lili -author:lili return nothing about the film in the first few pages of results. (Lili (1917 film) seems obscure enough to be irrelevant per WP:PDABPRIMARY.) Hameltion (talk | contribs) 06:52, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • The comparison between all-time mass views for Lili and all-time mass views for Lili (given name) indicates this is yet another case where the there's a mass of pretty random biographies the interest in which receives several orders of magnitudes more readership than the assumed primary topic, meaning this is an obvious deviation from the WP:PTOPIC guideline. Keeping these biographies at 2 clicks away from the readers who look up these people's names is just bad and wrong. (Support) For reference, https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=Lili indicates that in October '23 there was 2.5k total incoming, 569 total outgoing, of which 44 to the hatnote (~2% and ~8% respectively), which isn't conclusive by itself. --Joy (talk) 08:50, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
