Nation vs Island

[edit]

All of the Catholic diocese articles are sorted according to the nation to where they belong with a few exceptions. One of the exceptions is that of Great Britain. The recent debate with the category of Great Britain, is to eliminate that distinction, by changing the name to that of the Roman Catholic dioceses in the United Kingdom. This has consequences for Ireland, in that there are only 2 dioceses which reside neither in the Republic of Ireland, or in Great Britain.

The definition of Ireland, is that while these territories are in the episcopal conference of Ireland, the organisational structure here on the wikipedia is not according to the conferences, but according to the nations to which the dioceses belong.

Hence the move from the Category:Roman Catholic dioceses in Ireland to the Category:Roman Catholic dioceses in Great Britain. I understand that at present, the move is erroneous, I'm just waiting for Appleyard to do the move, since he's gone to bed. Benkenobi18 (talk) 09:14, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Structural changes over the years

[edit]

Is this realy appropriate? The contents are quite arbitrary. Many diocese have been merged and de-merged over the centuries. Why should these few examples be chosen? Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:47, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New picture/map for Diocese

[edit]

There is a decent jpg available to show the map of the dioceses of Ireland available here: http://www.wmi.ie/go/links/diocese_links

I own the copyright to this image (as I created it) and allow Wikipedia to us it. I am not an administrator, so am unable to upload it. Feel free to do so if you have authority. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mission.wmi (talkcontribs) 17:38, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Square peg, round hole

[edit]

There is no good reason to split down Irish church lists by jurisdiction where the churches themselves do not do so. It is pointless consistency. By all means specify which diocese are wholly or partly in which jurisdiction. jnestorius(talk) 18:34, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there is a good reason. It's because wikipedia categorizes all the dioceses based on the country that they are in. Ireland doesn't get to be an exception. Benkenobi18 (talk) 16:33, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is no such split in this article. The only split is by ecclesiastical province. In fact the article explicitly says, "While the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland is organised on an all-island basis...". Laurel Lodged (talk) 16:57, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, see Roman Catholic Vicariate Apostolic of Southern Arabia which covers several states in the arabian peninsula. Laurel Lodged (talk) 18:18, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Again, doesn't pertain to this issue here. This list contains a list of all the Roman Catholic dioceses in the Republic of Ireland. It used to contain all the Northern Ireland dioceses, but the category Roman Catholic dioceses in Great Britain was dumped about 3 years ago. Now we have a division that doesn't reflect the ecclesiastical division. By all means, make the changes you want, I support them, but not before we get the old category, Roman Catholic dioceses of Great Britain. The problem has been the Irish nationalists hating on the one category without understanding the repercussions of their decision. Benkenobi18 (talk) 08:19, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have another read of the article - it contains "all the Northern Ireland dioceses". As it should. Because that's how the Episcopal Conference organises it. Ireland is not alone in having dioceses that straddle noational borders. Political borders change - the Church remains relatively constant. So 3 Episcopal Conferences operate in the UK; Ireland, Scotland and England/Wales. If you have problems with Scottish dioceses, I'm surprised that the SNP or Scottish nationalists are not blamed. And please explain how the Arabian precedent is rejected. Laurel Lodged (talk) 19:14, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This article is supposed to be a list of all the RC dioceses in Ireland (the island). Why are 2 dioceses being excluded because they are in the modern political entity of Northern Ireland? The RC Church is organised on an all-Ireland basis, the dioceses date back to then middle ages. As Jnestorius states above the church does not split by jurisdiction so why should we? Also Laurel Lodged points out the example of Saudi Arabia when it comes to transnational borders and the RC church. Snappy (talk) 18:25, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Once again Benkenobi18, is trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole. How stupid is it to list the catholic dioceses of Ireland but not have the ones that are wholly in Northern Ireland? Very! Any reader would expect all the dioceses on the island to be listed, without a footnote explaining how they relate to modern political entities. One editors pov should not be allowed to ruin the reading experience of this article. Furthermore the main article is Roman Catholicism in Ireland not Roman Catholicism in the Republic of Ireland or Roman Catholicism in Northern Ireland, so the scope of the article is clearly all-island focused.
