The same URL can be pasted into Google Maps as a search, and will show the locations, as push-pins on a map

Severn Powerline Tunnel

- The mythical "Severn powerline tunnel" is still mentioned in the articles for Aust Severn Powerline Crossing and Severn Tunnel (rail), although neither can agree on its location. As this thing is unreferenced and doesn't (AFAICS) even exist as a tunnel, a past tunnel or a plan for a tunnel, are we ready to expunge the thing entirely from Wikipedia? Where does the estuary begin?
[edit]SSC: "A cable-stayed bridge which marks the official start of the Severn Estuary." So where did the estuary begin 15 years ago, before the SSC was built? How "official" is this "official start"? Andy Dingley (talk) 21:14, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
- This is almost an issues of semantics. A possible answer may be provided by the 18th century Customs system. Normally, coastal traffic from port to port was required to enter into coastal bond, that the goods were not be exported, upon which they obtained a "cocket". However, traffic between Gloucester, Bristol, and Chepstow did not have to obtain these for most commodities. It has been suggested that this applied as long as the vessel did not pass the "Holms" a couple of small islands. Sorry I am not sure of the details, but I expect they are in David Hussey's book on trade in the Bristol Channel. Peterkingiron (talk) 23:01, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
1810 tunnel ?
[edit]Anyone know about this? Supposedly work began at a short crossing near Newham / Bullo Pill, but was abandoned owing to flooding. There may be earthworks still visible today. Presumably this was to provide a quicker land route from Cinderford's manufacturing to markets in Bristol, but it seems a little odd, given that the main transport of the day would have been trows along the Severn, rather than road. There's a brief mention in the Severn Bridge Railway book. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:33, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- You may find it under the name of Haie Hill Tunnel, see the photo in Commons File:Haie Hill Tunnel.JPG. No indication that it was ever a crossing of the River Severn though...SethWhales talk 19:23, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- That tunnel is nearby, but it's inland (and was completed), not under the Severn. Bullo Pill Railway suggests that the two are connected, and that the Severn tunnel was to be an extension of the same line. Andy Dingley (talk) 19:47, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

- I think we've got enough leeway that a serious attempt at a tunnel, that left surviving earthworks, is deserving of mention. You can't "cross the Severn" through the powerline tunnel or the overhead power link either. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:11, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Upper Lode Lock
[edit]As far as I can see (in particular from Nicholson's Waterways Guide vol.2) there is no crossing at Upper Lode Lock, because (in common with the other river locks) there is also a weir here. Any objections before I remove it?--Shantavira|feed me 09:27, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
