Talk:List of regionally censored video games
Localisation of censorship
[edit]There are multiple games listed as being censored but not describing the locations in which the censored version was released nor detailing the availability of the uncensored versions. Perhaps editors with knowledge of these titles could add that important detail — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.142.31.51 (talk) 11:32, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Games to add
[edit]I think this list needs a lot of updating. I'm not proficient at wiki editing so I won't do it, but here is a small list of recent games that got regionally censored one way or another, with a source link for each. I'll keep adding to the list as I find more. Whoever adds these games to the article, please delete them from this list.

[edit]Although this article is currently quite weak, I believe it could be built into something very informative. It is not intended to be a protest or message board rant. As I continue to research other titles and other users contribute, this could inform people of an issue of great interest. Censorship is not only a major issue to us as consumers, but it is a reflection of society. This is exactly the kind of information that I, and many others, like to see on Wikipedia. On the internet, this is a topic of great discussion, and I hope that this article will remain and others will help improve and flesh it out.
Final Fantasy IV
[edit]It is worth noting that no main characters die in Final Fantasy IV except Tellah and his demise is just as noted in II/Easytype as it is in IV. Palom and Parom are revived in the original, FuSoYa and Golbez sleep in the moons core, Edge lives, Rydia lives, Rosa marries Cecil, Cain goes off to be a better Dragoon (that storyline is omitted from II, but that's more due to text limitations). there is no real censorship of the burning of Myst, but it is worth noting that in the Japanese Super Famicom release the item was a "Bomb Ring" and in the US SNES release it was a "Package". So intent is there. There is no bikini/leotard thing. A dance in Baron in FFIV has an EXTRA layer of clothing (dress) that she removes before dancing, which in the US game is not present, the dancer still wears the same exact outfit that every other dancer does, sans the dress. You also missed the Cecil/Rosa kiss after Cecil rescues Rosa from the Tower of Babil. The fact that in the Japanese version there is a scythe over Rosas head, not a giant iron ball. There were a large number of profanities removed as well. There are a hell of a lot more cuts/edits but most of them are storyline related or such classics as "you spoony bard!" (Source: I've played, decompiled, hacked, and generally screwed around with FFIV for about 12 years.) 108.5.165.216 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 01:25, 4 October 2010 (UTC).
Sources need improvement
[edit]I see a lot of entries are sourced to Youtube videos, which is a problem in a number of ways.
- If one was uploaded by a reliable source, like lets say IGN's Youtube page, that's fine, but most tend to be just random people on the internet, which makes it fail WP:USERG. Additionally, WP:COPYVIO issues may occur as well.
- Its generally original research to source things due to your own observations.
- Youtube videos are easily edited/altered, so it could be faked.
We really need better documentation of these examples. Additionally, we should probably have some inclusion criteria to filter out all the trivial examples. A common way approach is to only include ones that are noted by third party reliable sources. If they find it noteworthy, we list it, if no one covers is, we remove/exclude it. Dear Sergecross73
I'm sorry if I have annoyed you. I was the one trying to post what video games has gotten censored and what has gotten past the censorship. I didn't know you now run the page. If I made any mistakes I apologize. I just wanted people who visited the video game censorship to be more aware of the censored content that I have witnessed in my life or have found on the Internet. I'm trying my best to contribute to the page but because I'm autistic I sometimes forget to think before I type and post. I'll try to be more careful what I type from now on. CrosswalkX (talk) 02:01, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- Don't worry about it. You've made some good edits too, and others have made some not-so-great edits too. I'll try to stay around and continue to help improve it as well. Sergecross73 msg me 02:48, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
Restored some of the censored games on the page.
[edit]Please do not delete the censored video games I worked on hard restoring to wikipedia. If you think I'm doing something wrong or made a mistake on this page please let me know and I can work it out. I'm trying harder to be more professional on my contributing work.
Final Fantasy 7 did indeed get censored on the PC with more swearing symbols. Mario Party 8 had to be recalled in the UK with having the word "spastic" being changed to "erratic", Legend of Zelda Ocarnia of Time did have the Islam symbols and the Fire Temple chant song changed in the Gamecube release. The DK rap song featured in Donkey Kong 64 had the word "Hell" changed to "Heck" in Super Smash Bros Melee. Mike Tyson did get removed in the later 1990 Punch Out!! game.
Just remember there are many different video game censorships. From now on I'll try harder to continue to be respectful and professional in wikipedia. I'll do my best and be more careful in the future in my contributing work and I'll focus on video games I know very well and experienced. CrosswalkX (talk) 02:00, 11 May 2016 (UTC)
- I'll work through your edits late - some seem okay, while others are fundamentally wrong. For instance, the Mike Tyson one. I'm not doubting he was removed from the game, he definitely was. I object to it being called "censorship". Censorship is when something is changed because it's deemed offensive. Mike Tyson was not offensive, the problem was that they did not have the legal rights to use his name anymore. Changes due to legal restrictions is not censorship. Not every change that is made is censorship.
- I also object to when you add things like "They censored something, but still left in the word 'damn'". It does not make sense to list things that were not censored. That's getting off-topic. Sergecross73 msg me 02:40, 11 May 2016 (UTC)
Source for future use
[edit]- http://m.ign.com/articles/2016/05/12/games-so-brutal-they-were-banned-kinda - Here, this is the type of source we should be using in this article. It's a reliable source written written by an actual journalist. This is preferred over obscure blogs or YouTube videos. Sergecross73 msg me 10:40, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
Xenosaga 3
[edit]Why is there no mention of Xenosaga Episode 3 with the blood censor? To the wikipedia user now running the censored video game page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:1c0:c700:45de:6dd1:e48c:3239:c8ec (talk • contribs)
- It could be added, if you can find a reliable source taking note of it. If sources aren't taking note of it, it's often seen as not a noteworthy element. Not sure if this is the case here or not, just an FYI. Sergecross73 msg me 12:55, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
