The panic, the miracle
[edit]Stephen Hough wrote, as did many others elsewhere, on 27 October 2013 in the The Daily Telegraph, "Maria João Pires: the panic, the miracle", that Pires once turned up to a first rehearsal given as a free lunchtime concert at the Concertgebouw which was being taped for a documentary with the wrong notes. The orchestra under Riccardo Chailly started Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, but Peres had prepared for another Mozart concerto. However, K. 466 is a core part of her repertory and fortuitously has a rather long introduction; the article contains a YouTube clip which shows Pires' initial horror, then concentration, and finally the wonderfully crafted opening of her part. It is not clear when this happened, but the production date of the documentary Attrazione d'amore by Frank Scheffer is 1998.
