Please Take Untruths Out of Article, Absolutely Unneccesary

It says Mariah Carey signed a deal worth $100 million dollars, the largest deal signed. That is NOT true. Whitney Houston's deal was larger. I say this not to offend anyone, but because it is the truth: Whitney Houston's deal was $100 million from Arista Records and paid to Houston HERSELF as she recorded the albums. Mariah Carey's deal was $80 million ($20 million less) from Virgin Records and paid to Carey HERSELF as she recorded the albums; and $20 million paid from Virgin Records to Columbia Records to let Carey out of her contract early. Columbia Records took that huge payment and let Carey go. So that was actually an $80 million deal for Carey, NOT $100 million. Stop playing with words, or at the very least fully explain it. Next, if you are going to talk about the deal itself, you must include the full truth; that being that Carey subsequently lost that $80 million deal after Virgin released the first album by her (Glitter) and it sold poorly. They dropped her from the label, utilizing a clause in the contract that allowed them to rescind the $80 million deal and just pay her $20 million to part ways with her. The way this reads, it makes it out as if Carey still has the deal. No one should be walking away from reading this article with misinformation, and even worse, what may be purposefully misinformation. So please, understand, this is an encyclopedia. Untruths and half-truths should not be in here, and the article is locked from people who believe the truth should be in an encyclopedia article but can't put in the correct information. So Whitney Houston HAS a $100 million dollar deal, Mariah Carey HAD an $80 million deal, and Robbie Williams in 2002 signed a 100 million British pound deal, which was about $120 million or so then. So how in the world did Mariah Carey ever have the largest deal? Robbie Williams is also signing a new deal, and Michael Jackosn's estate is signing a new deal here in 2011, but if you read this article it makes it sound like Carey has the biggest deal, and she doesn't even have that deal AT ALL. -Corrections please, this is an encyclopedia not a fan page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.251.112.134 (talk) 05:31, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Edit request on 30 June 2012

Hello, ive been thinking for a while if we could add a few more cells to both, albums and singles, discography. Ive been thinking about adding the AC and Dance charts for the US singles and maybe some countries charts that are missing, so that we can provide a wider outlook to Mariah's chart performance, something like a mix between Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston's. Hope this gets into consideration! Thanks!

Gasdev (talk) 21:09, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Not done: please be more specific about what needs to be changed. Please make a very specific proposal that includes the exact wording (or table coding, as the case may be) you'd like added. Rivertorch (talk) 22:23, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Mariah Carey albums discography

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Mariah Carey albums discography's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Shouldn't Shipments be added as if they are sales?

Hello All, some albums like Mariah Carey 1990, has been certified by 7x platinum by CRIA for shipping over 700,000 units shouldn't that be added for the album sales? :) Fidel 13:57, 4 April 2013 (UTC) thank you

You answered your own question. The certification is for shipment, not sales, which is lesser than the shipped amount always. So if you can find the sales amount from Nielsen SoundScan, then only it can be added. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 16:45, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Vandalism disguised

Hello everyone. I called powerfully the attention figure of Music Box. We have two references that indicate it has sold 32 million (supposedly). The first reference that is used to say that "Music Box" has sold 32 million is Yahoo! Movies, which is still used, but although is a Link rot. Recovered with Internet Archive and surprise!, the reference say 30 million, where according to Wikipedia, according to Yahoo! were 32 million. The irony, is that basically there is only one reference (maybe is primary source) that says 32 million, compared to others that are saying most are 28 or 30 million. I suggest eliminating of the 32 million, which is certainly unrealistic. We can use to the BET that said are 28 million. Regards, Chrishonduras (talk) 23:22, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I agree. Good detective work! Binksternet (talk) 23:30, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
I updated the sales with the BET reference, anywhere else it needs to be done? Good catch Chrisonduras. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 04:44, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
By the way, what to do about this reference? Will it be considered unuseful since it is the only one calling the 32 million shot? But there are quite a few shots in google for Music Box. Can you guys help me interpret which would be reliable in this case? If we can find other references backing the 32 million, I will revert my edit. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 04:52, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Oppose I'm sorry Chrishonduras, but I don't think there's a strong reason to call the 32 million figure unrealistic. When the album sales were equally strong in America, Europe and Asia. Also, I did checked the Yahoo Movies sourceRecovered, and it does states 32 million sales. I quote: "By the time her third album, Music Box (1993), hit the shelves, Carey was an international star. Thanks to her high profile and catchy hit songs, the album became her fastest-selling recording to date, reaching No.1 on several charts across the world and accumulating over 32 million copies in international sales, while churning out the hit singles "Dreamlover" and "Hero." So I suggest we leave the original figure. --Watquaza (talk) 04:34, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
I don't exactly see the Yahoo source being that reliable, since it says both 30 million and 32 million in the same article itself. Check it. User:Fidelove found a Billboard source, but it was an advertisement from CArey's and Celine Dion's labels about their albums and congratulating the songwriter. So that cannot be used also. I'm more inclined to add the 30 million as that seems to be the widely accepted number I'm getting. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 07:29, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
Damm, you're right, it says both 30 and 32. But again, I don't see a real trouble in leaving her the 32 million claim. That's one of the few albums that have conquered pretty much the whole asian market and not only Japan, besides having respectable sales in the rest of the world too. Her certifications do cover the claim. I'm not convinced in devaluing Carey's success. --Watquaza (talk) 04:59, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

More sources claiming 32 million copies sold of Music Box by now

Well seeing all those sources, we can definitely add the 32 million back. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 17:49, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

The problem is that the figure of 32 million came it as mysteriously. Probably now have more references to support this figure (primary source?, maybe) when not corrected a possible vandalism on time. One thing is certain, is that this figure may be unrealistic; Itself MariahCarey.com claimed that has sold 30 million units. Another thing, the world median is between 28-30 million. Regards, Chrishonduras (talk) 19:26, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

The same thing could be said about The Immaculate Collection, Let's Talk About Love, Falling into You and the rest female albums that were released in the 90s. Sales are being updated after all these years. Hence, figures are going to increase naturally. --Watquaza (talk) 22:32, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

We have to do a case-by-case analysis, hence we cannot make assumptions that are justified by other articles. Regards, Chrishonduras (talk) 22:35, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Oppose - 32 million seems to be the max estimate. Hard sales for the album is around 27m, What I do think is that the album is overshipped. It would be best if we emphasize the shipment statement. It did have respectable sales around the world and impressively in Asia. (Tommy is her husband and the head of Sony after all, there's no surprise if he overshipped it). Mazic (talk) 15:23, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

No, no and no. The worldwide media is between 28-30 million. The higher figure is 30 million, that is shipped; Just look for example in the U.S., 10 million certified copies, but sold only 7.2 million until 2012 (is million, is a lot of difference). And must take into account that figure of 32 million wine "suspiciously" (the few references that say this figure may be primary sources). I have no problem in put that "Music Box has sold between 28 to 30 million copies" or "has shipped around 30 million units worldwide". Regards, Chrishonduras (talk) 16:15, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

7.2 million is Soundscan number, Music Box has hard sales from Sony and BMG clubs(which were very popular at the time, and Music Box is listed as a million seller) plus import sales, I do assume that you know this fact. There are a lot of reputable sources who have claimed 32 million as the above user said, and they have all agreed to put it back. To add one source BET (2012, on her bday) has claimed also 32 million. I think this case is closed. Regards. Mazic (talk) 16:38, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Okay, Sony and BMG clubs the figures are by distribution as well for the remainder of U.S. sales (and in total, their "sales" global). And no, the references not "there are a lot of reputable sources" (except for BET and Yahoo; but 2012 "BET" can be clearly primary source). Urban Daily ? and/or ElSalvador.com not are very good references (and both have the broken link -Internet Archive not working). I'm fervently that the figures should be placed between 28-30 million, buy anyway, in this case we change the figures all the artists and albums :) and nothing happens. Regards. Chrishonduras (talk) 16:57, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Mazic twice you have gone ahead with the 32 million source without achieving consensus here. As I said in the talk page, stop it. Discussion is still taking place here. Even I'm willing to bait that except for the soulculture link, others are not acceptable and is as primary as it gets, inclusive of info from Walter A and BET commemorating an award which is generally advertised. And Chris, I did not understand the last part of what you said, can you please explain? —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 17:07, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, BIO. Okay, Walter Afanasieff is not a good reference, this information is clearly taken from Wikipedia. Actually (in the era post-Wikipedia) no media is good, in principle. For example Forbes also copies of websites like Wikipedia or Amazon. Other example, the official web page of Paulina Rubio is copyedit from Wikipedia (even have numbers of references and same grammatical errors). Okay, I will try to explain the last part:

"With Madonna for example, there are media diversity "respectable" in the world that give figures over 300 million" as the powerful Univision as well Terra Networks, Notimex, EFE, AFP etc put the sales as high 500 million records. But just for this media we must add this figure?. Am I clear?. In that case, I can also show that albums like "The Immaculate Collection" has sold 30, 35 or even 52 million and with "good references". Analyzing this case (Music Box) by me is clear that the figure of 32 million is unreal (thanks from "Wiki-magic"). Solely. Regards. Chrishonduras (talk) 18:15, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

The source for the Rainbow sales is invalid. It's for the fiscal year 1999. The promotion for that album was not yet finished. Mariah herself claimes it to be at least 9 million(around 2001, if I recall the interview). That's what she says about her least selling studio album prior to signing to virgin records( note that, she herself claims that the unplugged sold 10 million).

Worldwide Sales are unavailable for some albums

As I saw, after a careful review, there are some albums which don't have its total worldwide claimed sales, And seemingly it's not sourced after a careful and a boredom research, thus I suggest using the following sourced article until more figures come out, [3] Charmbracelt:5,000,000 Butterfly: 15,500,000 Rainbow: 10,000,000 Glitter: 3,400,000 Thank You Hannah HannahChehade (talk) 14:37, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Christmas Album Category

Should Mariah's two Christmas albums be pulled from "Studio Albums" and be re-categorized as "Christmas Albums"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:2:5780:494:65AF:9778:BCF2:8872 (talk) 23:30, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

No, Christmas albums are studio albums at the end of the day, like jazz albums, reggae albums etc. Merry Christmas and Merry Christmas II You both consist of brand new recordings and cover versions of classical Christmas songs tweaked in a recording studio, hence they are considered among Maariah's studio recordings. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 05:42, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
Agreed. If Mariah recorded Christmas albums every year the separation might be justified, but not for only two projects. (The same approach is taken with Barbra Streisand's discography, which also includes two Christmas releases.) Gusworld (talk) 06:36, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Merry Christmas

Why are we focusing on soundscan sales? It was sourced as the best selling global holiday album of all time by a plethora of sources. I don't know why this was changed to simply reflect third-best in the US. Please change it back.--108.64.1.166 (talk) 22:51, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

Reordering

Should we re-order this list?

  • If Glitter is considered a studio album shouldn't it be included alongside the rest of them?
  • MTV Unplugged has its own article listing it as an EP, so shouldn't it be under the EP section alongside Valentines?
  • I don't get the point of having two separate sections for Greatest Hits albums and Compilation albums...a Greatest Hits collection is a compilation nonetheless. I think we should merge them.

I'm doing this for the moment, anyone opposing should undo my edit. Fabrictii (talk) 09:43, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Sorry to disagree with you, but I really do disagree on two major edits you made, sorry.
  • Although Glitter is a Studio album, it's entirely for a soundtrack, and like other pages, Soundtrack and Studio albums are listed separately.
  • I agree with your point about the MTV album being an EP, as opposed to a live album.
  • The reason there was a separated section for greatest hits and compilation is because they're two different types of albums. Even though the differences between the two are minor, there are differences. Greatest hits are compiled of the best selling and critically reviewed songs by an artist, whereas Compilations have little guidelines for production, and could be compiled of any tracks, no matter the chart or critical reception.
Therefore I'm going to revert two of your edits, and leave the EP as you left it. Any further discussion please feel free to respond. Azealia911 talk 10:37, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Music Box and Daydream number of copies;

Muisic Box and Daydream number of copies so much inflated. Music Box has sold 28 million and Daydream has sold 20-21 million. Music Box: 32 million , Dadydream:25 million these number are inflated Chrishonduras what do you think about this? —Navyiconer (talk) 17:21, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Certified units? I don't know why we don't use certified units anyway, because that is concrete.  — Calvin999 13:09, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

No. The total sales. I did this Rfc because the albums were listed in other articles like this one: List of best-selling albums, where my edits were re-verted by the same user Petergriffin9901.
88marcus, what Calvin999 meant is what I said at the talk page of Music Box, that why don't we base the Claimed sales on what the album is certified for? That is what we do for List of best-selling music artists anyways. —IB [ Poke ] 13:50, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Isn't that what I said? That's the article I was thinking of.  — Calvin999 13:52, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Yup you did, but I think 88marcus did not understand, so I explained and clarified him :) —IB [ Poke ] 05:48, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
  • 28kk (Music Box) and 20kk (Daydream): In this 1995 article, they said the album sold 23kk (according to Sony) link, at the time the album was out of the charts around the world (in USa it re-entered a month latter in October 7, 1995), and was certified 8x platinum by RIAA, the same year. The album was finally certified Diamond in 1997, and 4 years latter her record company says the it sold 25kk link , so the 2kk more came from the USA. This Mariah's album is not a big catalog seller, its last position in the charts was in June 1996, charting for three weeks, see here [4]. So how this album could sold that 7 million copies more without charting anywhere?! I think the 28kk is the more accurate to the final sales, that means 3 million copies more, to little markets where the album was not a selling. The "Daydream" case seems the same. Sony Music Japan says it sold 19 million copies as of 1999, unlike Music Box this album no re-entered in the charts, and its last certification was in 1998 link. To me 28kk and 20kk numbers are the more close to reality, and should be used in the article.--88marcus (talk) 13:40, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
  • 28 million for Music Box and 20 million for Daydream. If her largest fansite (Mariah Daily Journal) claimed those figures, how come some media estimate higher than those. Why would her fansite want to make her look bad. I have monitored this page for almost a decade and I believe that the sources for 32 million (Music Box) and 25 million (Daydream) are all Woozle effect started here in Wikipedia. Bluesatellite (talk) 14:01, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
  • @88marcus: please list down all sources which call for 32 million sales versus all sources calling for 28 million sales like how Binksternet has done in the Ray of Light RFC so that it gives a clear picture. —IB [ Poke ] 14:04, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
  • @Binksternet: may I request you to also provide your comment on this? —IB [ Poke ] 08:41, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
  • I don't like the Guardian source because they don't supply a link for 25M for Daydream so you can't see where they got that number, and even more because they do supply a link for the Music Box 32M number, but the link connects to an advertisement page in Billboard magazine – a full-page ad that says "Congratulations Jim Steinman" etc, which is not really about Mariah Carey. Since the Guardian source in this case is an unreliable outlier, publishing the highest figures seen here, without a solid basis, I think we must discount those figures and use the next ones down. So I'm in favor of 20M for Daydream and 28M for Music Box. Binksternet (talk) 14:56, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
  • There two more sources that claimed the 25kk for Daydream:
  • August 2013: Huffpost
  • February 2015: Complex

and two for the Music Box 32kk

  • March 2012: BET
  • July 2011: SoulCulture

I will add above. Sorry guys.--88marcus (talk) 16:35, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

  • Comment when "Mariah Daily Journal" is very obviously a fansite, I have no idea why that's even being considered as a viable source. Snuggums (talk / edits) 22:24, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
@SNUGGUMS: It's supposed to list all available estimations, like Ray of Light RFC. It doesn't mean we will cite that fansite on the Wikipedia article. Like I said before, why would her dedicated (and realistic) fans claim the lower figure for their idol. Bluesatellite (talk) 22:58, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
I see. It's a relief that won't actually be implemented! Snuggums (talk / edits) 23:18, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
  • According to my research, the last part post 28 million to 32 million for Daydream, and the sudden jump of Music Box to 25 million is beyond preposterous, and seems like blatant inflation. And if its indeed a Woozie effect, then we probably need to check all the Mariah album worldwide sales listed. I'm in favor of 20m for Daydream and 28m for Music Box. —IB [ Poke ] 04:40, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
@IndianBio: Do you mean 28kk for Music Box and 20kk for Daydream, right?! You change the names too...--88marcus (talk) 11:03, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
Yes sorry, I meant that, thanks for catching the typo 88marcus. —IB [ Poke ] 13:14, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
  • 25 million for Daydream and 32 million for Music Box, why? Because of the certification level first and second the claimed sales in markets where these claimed sales are not certified IE ( South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and the Netherlands)
@Fidelove: Please, sign your comment! And, ok, do you think she sold more 5 million copies of Daydream and 4 million copies of Music Box, in countries that you get a Platinum certification for sales of 10,000 shipped? And also, the 20kk and 28kk, included sales that doesn't make part of the certifications. Daydream has 15 million copies with certified sales, and Music Box around 20kk...--88marcus (talk) 03:18, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Mariah Carey Sales - Music Box

Dear all those concerned or interested.

There are a number of reliable sources attesting to the fact that Mariah Carey's album 'Music Box' has sold over 32m copies worldwide. From what I know, there has been a whole debate on this issue, some of which has been centred on "statistics" put up by a Mariah Carey fan site that estimate ww sales to be lower.

I would like to make a case for the amendment of the ww sales for Music Box to 32m

To begin with 'Music Box': the current citation being used to validate the claim that it has sold 28m copies comes from an Entertainment Weekly article dating to Dec 2017. However, the fact that Music Box's sales have been listed at 28m prior to this date (see the Music Box page from the 12th November 2017) suggests the unsuitability of this reference. A lot of sources tend to use Wikipedia as a reference point, and given the numerous changes to the worldwide sales of Music Box on its page suggests that this source has fallen into this trap. Moreover, in the October 1-December 17 2011 issue of Billboard Magazine, 'Music Box' is clearly listed as selling 32m records (LINK: https://books.google.com.lb/books?id=jim-YANOn5AC&pg=RA8-PA9&dq=mariah+carey+music+box+32+million+worldwide&hl=en&sa=X&ei=XMI3UsT1NczbsgbM6YHQBA&ved=0CDcQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=mariah%20carey%20music%20box%2032%20million%20worldwide&f=false) - a statistic corroborated by reputable publications such as The Huffington Post in 2013 (LINK: https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/08/31/mariah-carey-music-box-anniversary_n_3845699.html). A source such as Billboard - an independent organization that has spent decades keeping track of the charts WITHOUT BIAS - is one of the few that can really be trusted as being authentic. It also cites albums such as Celine Dion's 'Falling Into You' and Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' at 32m - statistics in line with the numbers cited on their respective wikipedia pagesever-mariah-an-interview-with-an-icon/). Billboard is the only source where album sales are reported directly to by organisations such as the RIAA. Recently in an interview, Mariah alluded to the sales of Music Box at being around and above the 30m mark! (LINK: https://pitchfork.com/features/interview/forever-mariah-an-interview-with-an-icon/).

@12mahalu: Please sign your comments. We did a RfC discussion to include Daydream and Music Box as 28kk and 20kk sold.--88marcus (talk) 04:13, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Memoirs Sales

I highly doubt the source saying Memoirs sold 2 million copies worldwide...it only sold 500k+ in the US and was an R&B album (which doesn't do as great outside the US). It doesn't make sense for there to be only a 500k difference between it and E=MC2. Should it should be removed for now until there are other sources? Heartfox (talk) 00:07, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Agree. Memoirs best chart performance is in the US and it sold "only" 500,000 there. It's impossible for this album to triple the figure internationally. Bluesatellite (talk) 01:10, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
88marcus is usually very objective with artists' sales claim. I want to know his 2cents. Bluesatellite (talk) 01:13, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
Bluesatellite I agree with you. Unfortunally I couldn't find nothing like "1 million copies sold worldwide". I think it's better remove the 2kk claim too.--88marcus (talk) 22:17, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

chartsinfrance says 1 million ww http://www.chartsinfrance.net/Mariah-Carey/news-70845.html Geegeeyee (talk) 14:02, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

@Geegeeyee: Charts in France is a forum/blog, I think we can't use it.--88marcus (talk) 05:37, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

it's used for e=mc² though Geegeeyee (talk) 07:41, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 18 February 2021

I believe her worldwide sales is outdated, she sold around 267 million records worldwide Pedroskinny (talk) 01:59, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made.  Ganbaruby! (Say hi!) 02:21, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
