BLP Issues

[edit]

An author, User:Markcurry99, claiming to be Curry himself, has removed the Personal Life section. His edit summary was "Please delete all mention of my personal life. it may harm my career!". I have restored this as I can't see any reason why the section should be problematic. It is referenced and makes no negative statements about Curry that would damage his career, social life or standing in general. I am disinclined to believe that the author who did this really is Curry. His contribution record looks a bit dubious to me. He also keeps trying to put is some stuff about an alleged ITV2 programme which gets no Google hits at all. Even ITV2 has a higher profile than that ;-). I think he is a hoaxer. That said, there might be a case for removing the name of Curry's partner. What do we think? --DanielRigal (talk) 17:33, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

gender confusion (Later career section)

[edit]

Is 'wife' the correct term for Mark Curry's partner?—Preceding unsigned comment added by MissyMink (talkcontribs) 13:27, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is unreferenced so I have removed it anyway. If it is true then it can be added back, with references, and correct terminology. I don't know it the term "wife" was intended to refer to his civil partner, but if it was then that is likely to be considered offensive. --DanielRigal (talk) 22:18, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Reliably Sourced Information

[edit]

Edit request I have been trying and was briefly successful in adding various aspects to Mark Curry, the television presenter's page, but it keeps being removed and reverted. I want to know what I can do to deliver the same information without this happening. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mark_Curry_(television_presenter)&oldid=1105285507 This is my old version of Mark Curry's page. Please could somebody proof read this and then inform me if it is good to be published. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nickcognito64 (talkcontribs) 18:02, 19 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've just spent way too long cleaning up this mess and I think we have a serious problem here! It is clear that many previous authors have intended to promote Curry but have done so in such a hideously inept way that it actually reads as to do more to humiliate him than to promote him. In particular, the desperate over-coverage of his more recent activities inadvertently gives the impression of a washed up former celebrity trying to stay in the media business. I have no reason to believe that this reflects reality. (Mark, if you see this, please don't take that personally! I mean that as a criticism of the awful way that the article was written, not of you in real life. I think my changes do a lot to reduce this impression.) Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia. It is not our job either to big him up or to make him look like a fool. We just recount his career, in appropriate but not excessive detail, and leave it at that.
Here is what I think we can do to get things back on track:
  • Remove all the minor appearances into tables or lists. Prose is great if there is anything to say but when it is just "Curry was in this" then a list is fine. Trying to spin a minor one-off TV appearance or a short run in a regional theatre production into a whole paragraph looks desperate. Putting it on a list looks a lot better as it shows him doing a wide range of things without trying to spin them as more than they are.
  • Get everything which tagged as "citation needed" (which is more-or-less the whole article!) referenced properly using reliable sources only.
  • IMDB says he was in 4 episodes of Hollyoaks. That's not even in the body of the article. That's a rare example of something that needs coverage expanding not reducing.
  • Look into other coverage in reliable sources. Did he ever win any notable awards? If so we could put them in a little table.

I've just added his official website to the article. Ironically, that is probably more help in promoting him than all the verbiage that I removed. The upshot of this is that the Copyvio Detector has noticed that some text in the article seems to be copied from his website. (Yeah, yeah. I know. shockedpikachuface.gif) I think this is where all the stuff that referred to him as "Mark" comes from. It's currently only a 30% score for plagiarism, following my clean-up, but if I check some of the older versions they were 67% plagiarised from the Daily Mail, which isn't even a reliable source. (Not that plagiarism would be OK if it was!)
I am not going to go ham with the warnings this time but I reserve the right to hit people hard with warning templates, or even report them to the admin boards, if there is any more of this nonsense! DanielRigal (talk) 13:57, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's down to 17% now. I think that's probably OK. We expect some overlap as things like the names of the shows he was in are going to appear in the referenced sources. DanielRigal (talk) 14:15, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 22 July 2023

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Moved. As Mark Curry (British TV presenter) and Mark Curry (American actor). (closed by non-admin page mover) SilverLocust 💬 12:14, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

– There are two actors and TV presenters born in 1961 named Mark Curry. The lead sentence for the American one states, "Marcus G. Curry (born June 1, 1961), known professionally as Mark Curry, is an American actor, comedian, and television host." The lede sentence for the English one states, "Mark Preston Curry (born 27 August 1961) is an English actor as well as a television and radio presenter." Since "actor" is the initial description of each man's profession and the two men are both actors and presenters in their respective countries, it would seem intuitive to differentiate them according to the country in which they are known. As for the incomplete disambiguations Mark Curry (presenter) and Mark Curry (actor), those can simply redirect to the Mark Curry disambiguation page. — Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 11:55, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Neutral The UK Mark Curry is primarily notable as a presenter, and less so as an actor, but I can see how having "American" and "English" in the titles might help readers to find the correct article more easily. I am unsure as to whether the move is worth doing or not. --DanielRigal (talk) 15:22, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nonetheless, both men have served as actors and presenters. If consensus were to prefer the non-analogous forms — Mark Curry (presenter)Mark Curry (English presenter) and Mark Curry (actor)Mark Curry (American actor) — I would also support such an alternative option. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 15:58, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would also support the alternative form Mark Curry (presenter)Mark Curry (British TV presenter) per Necrothesp or simply Mark Curry (presenter)Mark Curry (British presenter) if consensus decides that his radio presenting is sufficiently notable alongside his TV work. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 22:40, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
