Can noise be cancelled?
[edit]I disagree with changing this sub-heading to "noise cancellation". This implies that Zobel and Carson were working on this, they were not, there work shows the exact opposite, that such a thing is impossible and those attempting it were misguided. Although in general I would agree that a question as title is poor style, I feel this is one of those rare exceptions where it exactly encapsulates the situation. See also section
[edit]Some of the entries in the "see also" section were recently deleted on the grounds that they are already linked. I feel that in an article of this length it is useful for the reader to have all the relevant circuits grouped together and linked to their articles for easy reference. Likewise with the key people involved. I know what it says at WP:ALSO, but it also says that it is ultimately a matter of editorial judgment. I think you will find that virtually all the entries in "see also" are already linked. The section should, therefore, be allowed to stand or deleted in its entirety. Piecemeal removals is just going to make a mess of it. SpinningSpark 14:14, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, so let's get rid of it entirely. I was merely removing links I had recalled seeing. This article is nowhere near long enough to justify such an extensive see also section, especially since most of the terms are already linked. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 14:16, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- OK, agreed. SpinningSpark 09:20, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- Well, not entirely. Just stuff that's already linked. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 10:25, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- Nah, take them all out - lattice phase equaliser and the Heaviside condition are already linked. Bandstop filter was only there for completeness because the others were, although Zobel certainly provided some designs, the article will not throw any additional light on this one. Design engineer?
[edit]What is a design engineer? Is it an engineer who designs things? That's pretty much every engineer. This guy sounds like an electrical engineer and the article should say that instead of the ambiguous term, "design engineer." (WP Editor 2011 (talk) 10:58, 28 January 2012 (UTC))
- Agreed. SpinningSpark 16:41, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
- Engineers are sometimes divided into "design engineers" and "production engineers". One designs things -- prototypes if you will. The other makes them manufacturable and manages production. Some other common functions would include quality engineer and so on. ☆ Bri (talk) 00:01, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

FA in need of review
[edit]I started to record this article for WP:SPOKEN but kept running into oddities and irregularities in the prose. Without having fact-checked the article, the biggest issue to me is one of WP:TONE. I find this article generally to be too informal and read almost more as an essay in places than an encyclopedia article. Some specific instances of this:
- Thus, they anticipated the later work of Claude Shannon, who showed how the theoretical information rate of a channel is related to the noise of the channel. -- Feels like WP:OR
- The last of Zobel's prolific list of patents -- Feels WP:PEACOCK
- It is therefore no surprise that in Zobel's paper on the electric wave filter a very similar representation is found for the transmission function of filters. -- definitely editorializing
- With modern technology such a calculation is trivially easy, but Ingersoll and Zobel recommend the use of harmonic analysers, which are the mechanical counterpart of today's spectrum analysers. -- Again, a WP:TONE issue.
These issues are present throughout the article. I suspect there are also places additional (or more specific, to include page numbers) citations should be added, especially in the sections discussing Zobel's research. These issues should be rectified if the article is to retain FA status. M4V3R1CK32 (talk) 22:49, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
