Ashwin's stint with Chennai Super Kings

[edit]

In the section on Ashwin's performances in the IPL, the fact that he played with Chennai Super Kings for 4-6 seasons is completely missing, and that section only begins with mention of his playing for the Rising Pune Supergiants, followed by his stints with Punjab and Delhi. Knowledgeable Wikipedians may kindly add that part. Srirangam99 (talk) 11:11, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'll be reviewing this article. This is my first review, and you seem to have more experience than me, so feel free to correct me if you think I'm making a mistake. Cheers! VK wiki100 13:11, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking up the review. Cheers! Magentic Manifestations (talk) 17:19, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So, I'm reading the article now and listing down the points I think need attention.

  • Ashwin has 500 wickets in tests and is the fastest bowler to reach 300 wickets in terms of number of innings. - capitalize "tests" to "Tests".
Done Magentic Manifestations (talk) 17:19, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • He has won ten Man of the Series awards in tests, which is the highest by an Indian cricketer and the second most. - again capitalize tests and write it as "and the second highest overall." for better clarity.
Done Magentic Manifestations (talk) 17:19, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So, I've read the whole article, and while I found most of the prose to be clear, there are certain places where attention is needed. I can't list all of them here, so I want you to look at the article once again and do a sort of cleanup, although most of it is fine. I haven't looked at the references, which I'll do later. Regarding the coverage part, I'd say that the "Early life and education" section, "Personal life" section, and the "Domestic career" section might be expanded if there is enough content available as per WP:RS. Also, I suggest merging the "Early career" section with the "Domestic career" section.

Agreed on the last part, combined early career with domestic as the section was barely a few lines. I am combining early and personal life sections as well. Will see if it can be expanded. On the prose part, would be helpful if you can cite a few instances as to what you are exactly referring to. Thanks! Magentic Manifestations (talk) 17:19, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So, I've made some minor edits myself. Mainly, the issue was with continuity, as there were many instances where commas were missing. I also added pronouns in some places where 'Ashwin' was used redundantly. Now, the prose is clear and I believe it passes the prose criteria. VK wiki100 06:19, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lead

[edit]

Lead is suppose to be a summary of the article so where in the article it talks about this – "Widely regarded as one of the most prolific off spinners of all time" and I also didn't found anything about this – "is one of the only three players to have scored 3000 runs and taken 450 wickets in Tests. As of February 2024, Ashwin is the second highest-ranked bowler in the ICC men's player rankings and the highest rated Indian bowler ever in Tests" – in the article except lead .VK wiki100 06:37, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Has been included in the article with sources. Magentic Manifestations (talk) 16:59, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am passing the MoS, ref layout, and images criteria.VK wiki100 05:33, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked the references up to this section, and it is well-referenced for the most part, but it lacks direct sources for many statements like "When England toured India in October 2011, Ashwin was the second-highest wicket-taker of the series, with ten wickets in a 5–0 victory.", and this one "India eventually lost the series 2–1 in which Ashwin managed to take only 14 wickets in the four Tests at an average of 52.64. However, he scored 243 runs, averaging 60.75, including two fifties, and finished as India's second best batsman of the series.". In both lines, there are sources stating Ashwin's record but not mentioning whether India won the series or not. The same thing applies here also: "With nine wickets in six matches, Ashwin finished as the leading wicket-taker of the home ODI series against Australia in October–November 2013, which India won 3–2." and here:"In early 2014, Ashwin's overseas struggles continued during the New Zealand tour, where he managed to bag a solitary wicket in the five-match ODI series, which India lost 4–0." and in this paragraph: "He played only two matches in the five Test series, scoring 40 and 46 not out but going wicketless in the fourth Test and taking three wickets in the last match, both of which ended in defeats. India won the ODI series that followed 3–1. with Ashwin taking seven wickets from four matches at an average of 24.85 and an economy rate of less than 4.5." There is no source for the test matches and for the ODI series win. Here also, the reference only states the record of the series: "India whitewashed Sri Lanka in a five-match ODI series in November 2014, in which Ashwin took 6 wickets to his name at 33.33." So, my point is that there are no immediate sources for the verification of "series win" in many instances. VK wiki100 04:17, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have addressed the instances mentioned above and added sources for certain other instances as well wherever required! Magentic Manifestations (talk) 06:46, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • In the section "IPL career," replace the source for the first line with this source, as the mentioned The Hindu article does not seem to mention Ashwin being picked by CSK in 2008. Additionally, the second line about Ashwin debuting for CSK in 2009 is not verified by the mentioned source; it only mentions that Ashwin's first season was in 2009. The same issue applies to the last line of the paragraph, as the source does not mention CSK at all.
  • In last paragraph - Delhi retained him for the 2021 season. - Source about retention needed.
  • He took 12 wickets and scored 191 runs to take Rajasthan to the finals of the 2022 season. - source about RR reaching final?

I've read the entire article, and it appears to meet the criteria. I only found these instances above where a source is needed. Once you correct that, I'll pass it. VK wiki100 06:34, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname.

[edit]

Hi All,

The Murali of Madras is an affectionate moniker afforded to ashwin draving comparisons to the greatest offspiner of all time, Muttiah Muralitharan akin to the Mozard of Madras afforded to Ar rAHMAN, https://media.licdn.com/dms/image/D5622AQFnu3bIRsux8Q/feedshare-shrink_800/0/1696157284639?e=2147483647&v=beta&t=xrK-yOtFNM6r7eV05ZKHJLG_QP_4Jb3v3kVJszaMqrY this is an example of a posted created and circulated containing the nickname as well as all over the internet. Would be disgraceful to remove it before someone hasn't heard it before. Quite frankly I haven't heard Lege, but i accept it. 161.69.71.25 (talk) 10:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
