"permanent settlement"? I am not sure what this phrase means. Both San Nicholas and San Clemente Islands are military bases with personel who live there during their tour of duty. San Clemente Island even has a small bowling alley among other facilities (at least when I visited there circa 1978-9).

Besides Avalon, isn't there a small population at the Two Harbors (at the Isthmus)? Also: Info on the USC Marine Lab, and maybe the Boy Scout camp on the island should be added. I'll try to think of more, and then come back to do some editing. [[User:GK|gK ¿?]] 04:17, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Casino

The casino theater isn't just for movies, actually. I was surprised to learn that it's actually got flyrails, a light system, etc, and is useful for theater as well (I played in the pit orchestra for a musical that went there, in fact). Of course, it's very rarely used as anything more than a movie theater, but I figured I'd add it in to the article. My writing style's a bit clunky, but it's late. Yes, I would like to point out that the casino is not used for gambling (as mentioned below). I have been to Catalina before and visited the casino. Plays are performed there and it also acts as a very large movie theater. There are three huge rooms on the bottom level, each for plays or movies. I would also like to point out that the casino is home to the only movie theater on the island (i think). To access the upper levels there are ramps which were made because Wrigley liked the ramps at Wrigley Baseball Field. On the top level there is a very large ballroom, also used for basketball. I believe at one time it was the largest ballroom in the world. The casino is one of the best places to visit if you go to Avalon.

Known Shipwrecks

I just added this section with one shipwreck. This is a request for others (as I will do) to identify specific wrecks and locations (if known). Don't know what one would consider a "Catalina" wreck but propose about 11 miles (half way to the California coastline) as the boundary.

Fox Landing

UFO Sighting

There were a multitude of sightings in the late 60s and 70s. I think this would be worth putting in the article, as not many people know about it. why are Catalina UFO sightings especially note worthy ? Without some good reasoning on this, not to mention cited sources, I wouldn't expect a UFO section to last very long. --Scott.kelley (talk) 00:39, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Transportation

Geology

"Catalina...is a geographic anomaly. Unlike California's other seven Channel Islands, it didn't break away from the mainland, but was formed by the upward heave of tectonic plates."

With all due respect to Sunset magazine, whose expertise in cooking and decorating is unchallenged, I don't believe that the other Channel Islands broke away from the mainland. (I'm not even sure how that would occur.) My understanding of the northern islands is that they are a continuation of the Santa Monica Mountains range, all of which has been lifted and lowered from time to time. Maybe we can summarize Catalina's geologic hsitory without reference to the other islands. -Will Beback 23:20, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

I corrected the elevation of Mt Orizaba to the value published by the Catalina Island Conservancy (http://www.catalinaconservancy.org/index.php?s=visit&p=campsites), in feet as well as meters.--Jim10701 (talk) 06:09, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

The Race of White Indian Giants of 1000 BCE

Perhaps the article should mention the skeletons of an ancient race of tall fair haired Indians, 7 to 9 feet high once lived on this Island and adjacent Islands. During the expedition to the interior of Catalina (c.1922-1929) Professor Ralph Glidden collected the skeletons of 3,781 Indians. The largest he found was of a man 9-feet-2 inches tall. Practically all the male adults -were of gigantic stature, averaging around 7 feet in height.

Infrastructure?

The government and infrastructure section talks about the police station but omits electricity, fresh water, roads, and internet. How are those services on the island? -- ke4roh (talk) 22:56, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Bison

I just visited the island and I saw a bison. There are still bison on the island, contrary to what the article says. -User:Xiao Li 06:08, 4 Sep 2005 (UTC)

That part of the article is very unclear and needs to be written. A quick check on the Conservancy website shows that the Bison are still there, although they are trying to limit the range of the Bison. [1] I couldn't find anything on the website about the relocation efforts, although I seem to remember from the newspaper reports that about half of the Bison on Catalina were relocated.

If you want, you can help clarify that section. I will try to do some further research and get back to this article, or perhaps one of the other editors who regularly edit this article will help clarify that section. BlankVerse ∅ 14:32, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

If it helps, I remember (on my previous trips to Catalina) that the Bison are permitted to stay because they don't cause the same environmental impact as the goats. Bobak 19:23, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

I go to Catalina every year and there are most definitly bison. The people of Catalina island are trying to get rid of the wild boar because they dig up the natural vegitation. I also have a panoramic shot of all of the east side of Catalina if you think I should upload it. Tom 03:29, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

An anon added a sentence to say that the bison were brought over for the 1971 western movie, Bless the Beasts and the Children. This seems unlikely since the accounts of their presence go back decades earlier. However it's possible that the bison were used in that film, or even that more bison were imported for it. According to the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce, the bison were brought onto the island in 1924 as part of the movie The Vanishing American, though the shots with the bison in them ended up not being used in the film. This is consistent with what I've always heard, so I'll go ahead and make the change.--mcd51 (talk) 01:50, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

This item is not for sale in Catalina Island?

Shipping companies like UPS and FedEx don't operate on the island, and instead contract with Catalina Flying Boats, which flies packages into the airport, and delivers by truck to the rest of the island. They're pretty picky about their cargo, especially chemicals, or anything even remotely flammable or explosive. The Original People of the Island

Doesn't anyone else find this statement disturbing (perhaps not 'unusual', in that it has been done all through native history, but without explanation)?

"The Tongva called the island Pimu or Pimugna and referred to themselves as the Pimugnans." If they called themselves Pimugnans, why don't we? Why are they called 'the Tongva'? Who decided that, and why?

I find it insulting and offensive because I am part Tsalagi, erroneously called Cherokee. Cherokee is actually a slight used by the Creek (is that what they called themselves?) to insult the Tsalagi. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.6.6.206 (talk) 12:28, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Santa Catalina Island, California

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Santa Catalina Island, California's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Pop Culture/Trivia

I believe Billy Joel's 1993 song denoting his exit from pop, Famous Last Words, mentions Catalina Island...possibly as his home. I wouldn't have thought this, but he seems to imply that "everyone" (the bulk of tourism) has left the island as summer has ended.

-- I always thought that referred to Avalon, New Jersey which is an affluent resort community on the NJ shoreline, and would be a lot more seasonal than the one on Catalina Island. 58.137.17.238 (talk) 19:57, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

Comments and questions

I think the article is decent but there are several things I need to point out.

1. Why use the Spanish name of João Rodrigues Cabrilho if he was Portuguese? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

2. Carlos Antonio Carrillo is mentioned in the Mexican land grant section but he is not introduced nor the importance of his name is given. If he is to be mentioned, at least it should be linked to something he did otherwise, as it is now, his name in the context is completely useless so it should be removed.

3. The dates in the Mexican land grant section are not in chronological order. It would be nice if they were.

4. The last sentence in the Catalina's gold rush section says "next few decades". What decades they are is not specified. This is vague and it should be avoided.

Wild Boar ?

Some years ago I took a guided tour of Catalina and the guide mentioned that there were wild boar on the island and that there were organized hunts with bow and arrow. This is not mentioned in this article so I wonder if he was putting me on or that maybe we should add something about this. Johnor (talk) 22:24, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Since posting the above comment I have found a couple of references that say there are in fact wild boar, goats and sea lions in addition to the fauna mentioned in this article. Also these sources mention the attempts to control the population of the boar with hunting. See :

Communications

The last sentence in Communications about Catalina having the last U.S. operating manual central office and its date of replacement by an automatic central office appears to be unsupported by the reference given. I could find no mention of Catalina there. If no alternate supporting evidence can be supplied, this statement should either be removed or rewritten to state that replacement occurred at some date without the "last" description.
