The name of the bug is spelled "Shellshock" (no StudlyCaps) in Red Hat's security advisory. The name "shellshocked" only occurs in the given source as a tag. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 19:39, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Logos

The point isn't to document every blip that occurs along the trail, but to wait for the trail to be stable, and document the things that remained notable over time. Not understanding the "sad panda" response, but we have now three separate editors who have either reverted the addition of the logos or advised for their removal. Can we assume we have WP:CONSENSUS to remove them? As for the "Simple Proof" figure, also created by Edprevost (talk · contribs), this appears to be a screenshot off of his own Linux box, so we really have only his word that this is any valid evidence of anything, making for more WP:OR. The testing section in text actually allows you to cut and paste the tests. Which you need to do if you want to test your own locally installed Bash. Also, text is always better than equivalent image, because you can manipulate it easily. Thue (talk) 22:36, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Protection or review process?

I imagine that many people will be coming to this article looking for more information. There are code examples on the page which some users will surely try to run (it seems that they are there, in part, to allow users to self-test). This is of course a good target for malicious wiki users who could change that example code and make users damage their computers. So I think it would be good to have some form of protection on the page at least for a week, so that that can't happen. CodeCat (talk) 00:17, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Section about CVE-2014-7169 vulnerability details

In my opinion, the details provided in this section are incorrect and misleading. What is presented as bash vulnerability, is in fact a correct and expected behavior. Specifically, by executing command line in form of variable=value command, it is expected that the command is executed. This is the reason why this purported "vulnerability" is seen in all shells. I just fixed it. The rest of the section appeared to have been based on the incorrect example that was there before, so I just deleted that part. The HELLO_WORLD_VAR example is still broken; the way it stands, `HELLO_WORLD_VAR=() { ...` will define `HELLO_WORLD_VAR` to be `()`, and throw syntax error on the rest of the line. The content of the variable should be quoted.136.187.146.174 (talk) 07:05, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is not seen in all shells by design, the newly patched systems, patched to bash-4.1.2-15.19 via Amazon have a protection in place, but ONLY for BASH, hence the creation of CVE 2014-7169

Are you saying that that shows that csh has the vulnerability? It doesn't look that way to me; csh is echoing "date", as it's supposed to, and not executing the "date" command like bash is doing. The file "echo" still exists from when you exploited the vulnerability in bash (and, just to be sure csh wasn't creating the file again, I ran the command on my own computer; no new files were created, and there's still no "echo" file). ~User:chridd [[tʃɹɪː|Special:Contributions]] 02:17, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is an example of CVE 2014-7169. In which a local file is written with the contents of 'date'; it is not an "interpretation", it IS the bug. The question is, on what academic grounds are you qualified to assert that this code snippet represents the bug in question. Wikipedia has a standard of verifiability that requires that facts such as this be cited to reliable sources. Creating your own knowledge and inserting it into articles is considered original research and is disallowed. Whether or not you are a recognized authority, the material must first be published in a source where proper editorial or peer review is in place before it can be asserted here at Wikipedia. But the discussion in this section implies that you and chridd are tweaking code to reproduce the bug, which would be original research. I don't doubt your expertise in this area, but Wikipedia has rules about publishing original research. Your code snippet, if not previously published in a reliable source as an example of this bug in action, is not verifiable, and has no place.   • Oppose - We use common names and not official names for article titles. I doubt many outside the tech/security arena would use CVE-2014-6271. If news articles are using Shellshock and ShellShock, then that is more likely to be the common name then Shellshocked. Section "Log parsing"

Where do you store line/field data from logs in your Bash scripts? I can't think of a single IT guy with any experience who doesn't use Bash to write quick scripts to scrub or sift logs. I don't think it should be included without a source showing it exists. I could make 50 sections right now based on vulnerabilities that might exist in home made scripts. While IAR does allow you to ignore the rules to improve or maintain Wikipedia I believe the inclusion of original research does not improve or maintain Wikipedia.
If this is a real concern then you should be able to find a security expert describing it. While there are many venues where a potential vulnerability that you thought up are very appropriate and encyclopedia is not one. I understand the rule and why we have it. However, if every bit of OR on WP was removed, WP would only have a 1/3 of the information it has -- especially in articles on software and technology. We could change the scope of the section to discuss, generally, how the bug effects machines running offline with examples of how that works. As a security expert, I wouldn't expect an exhaustive list here. Instead, I would anticipate a detailed description of how the vulnerability works, so I could go and test it in various scenarios. I think the opening and other portions ofy the article demonstrate clearly that it' not limited to internet connected systems only. While working on patching Shellshock, Red Hat researcher Florian Weimer found two more bugs, CVE-2014-7186 and CVE-2014-7187, according to https://securityblog.redhat.com/2014/09/26/frequently-asked-questions-about-the-shellshock-bash-flaws/ . It's natural for a fast-moving topic like this to result in a article that's messy - but can we start tidying up?

  • Think about structure - looking at Heartbleed a "History" section might be useful
  • The "shellshocker" site link is inappropriate, given that we have many authoritative sources
  • Quoting text straight from "...email addressed to the oss-sec..." is a Primary Source

How the bug works, rewrite section

I rewrote the section, CVE-2014-6271, as:

The bug manifests itself as Bash is starting up. When Bash is invoked, it erroneously processes trailing strings after function definitions in the values of environment variables from its parent process.[a] This allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted environment.[b]

The bug requires that an environment variable be defined with a function that uses closed parentheses and brackets followed by arbitrary code, such as:

export x='() { :;}; echo this-should-not-run'

When a subsequent command invokes Bash, Bash processes the environment from its parent process, including the malformed environment variable. When the malformed environment variable is processed, the bug causes the trailing arbitrary code to execute before running the subsequent command, such as:

bash -c 'echo this-will-run'
this-should-not-run
this-will-run

I think this is a good change, and much better than the old section. I like breaking it up into the export and the bash call, as you've done, rather than just displaying the whole exploit as a single block. We may want to include a full example for the first CVE, but I'm not opposed to using that format for describing the other CVEs. The description is much better than what was there as well. Selfpub sources and tag

@Sparkie82: I agree there are too many selfpub sources, as you tagged the article. I think some are used appropriately in the article, though. Specs and manpages seem vaguely okay, and I think it's fine to reference security releases from Ubuntu, Redhat, etc, in certain cases. Blogs from sources known in the field like Qualys may be okay, at least for now. I think the Zalewski blog about the Florian Wiemer patch should go, as it doesn't match the apparent corresponding patch. [4] There's a Twitter ref too. I'm going to remove both of those things. The difficulty here is that it is very common within the security community to use mediums of communication, typically considered unfit for wiki references. Consider that almost all of this information has come from blogs and mailing lists, to date. My argument is Occamian, lets keep these references, and then update them as things mature and progress to more vetted publications. It's okay if we're missing some information until more sources cover it, since those who want to know more technical detail can find it on the web. If you're going to nuke ACCURATE references to the actual source code commit date while waiting for a periodical publication to pick up on it, at least please ALSO nuke the INACCURATE 1992 date. Shellshocker.net

Can someone please do a write up of shellshocker.net? It's one of the most up to date resources and provides information on how to test and patch your system. It was the first available online shellshock vulnerability testing service that has provided over 42164 Total tests to date (as of the writing of this). What sort of "write up"? I don't think it provides any information the article lacks, and I'm not comfortable including it as an external link, especially since at the very top it states: "curl https://shellshocker.net/fixbash | sh". Encouraging users to pipe the output of a script from a random remote server into a shell is a really fucking bad idea, especially when you're trying to fix a vulnerability, so directing Wikipedia users to such a site is harmful.
Additionally, I notice that your IP address is located in Fort Wayne, IN, where the company hosting shellshocker.net is based, and the only contributions you've made have been to add shellshocker.net to the article. (As the "official" site, even though the domain wasn't created until the day after the bug was released from embargo.) I had actually added the shellshocker.net section to this article, only for the sake of quick access while the article was developing, as it had more information than the article did at the time. I do agree, regardless of the intentions of {u|184.19.8.213} that, this is not an appropriate source for this article. At least not to the degree that it should have it's own section. Shellshocker.net has an example of CVE-2014-6278 and a patch for it as well, this wikipedia article still has no information on CVE-2014-6278. Right now developers and system administrators are trusting shellshocker.net as the primary source for updated information about ShellShock. The IP 64.186.39.3 is registered to "MEDICAL INFORMATICS ENGINEERING, INC.", who run shellshocker.net. It's appropriate to mention that you are affiliated with a site when you're suggesting its inclusion in an encyclopedia article. (Please read the conflict of interest policy if you have not.) In any case, we would need a reliable source to state that people are trusting this site as you claim, and that it is the "primary source" of information about Shellshock. The site itself is a potential security problem, as noted above, so it also cannot be included as the external links policy prohibits malicious scripts and similar. In the MediaWiki source, "includes/GlobalFunctions.php" calls bash in a widely used "wfShellExec()" function, which you could potentially get at by uploading an image or other things. I agree, it's too complicated, poorly unreferenced, and unnecessary. We can summarize and condense the web/CGI, SSH, and possibly DHCP examples, since those are being widely reported, but the last two are kinda just givens. (If we mention setuid is a problem, we'd have to mention it's an issue if a program is just running as root without being setuid, and other obvious stuff like that.) I disagree. The section needs to be expanded not condensed. Privilege escalation is a local vulnerability which exists independently and needs to be mentioned. It's not a given - supplying arbitrary environment variables shouldn't cause arbitrary code execution. There are known-dangerous environment variables (PATH, SHELLOPTS etc) but shellshocked makes **any** variable passed to a setuid binary dangerous, even previously "known harmless" ones, when they need not be and are not under e.g. dash or any other posix shell. A full discussion of the exploitation vectors in that section is essential to this article. Readers need to be given a complete explanation of how the bug is exploited. To say that the section may get to big is not the as it "being" too big. I suggest we change the name of the section to Exploitation vectors, so editors don't try to expand it with a bunch of specific examples. Then I suggest subsectioning it into broad categories like; offline exploits, web services, and other application layer exploits. (We can discuss the exact subsections.) I'm opposed to the escalation of privilege and offline vulnerabilities, because they're too vague (would be WP:UNDUE without listing even more theoretical vulnerabilities) and possibly unreferenceable. I think I need to explain something here that I thought was already understood. For purposes of this explanation only, here is a general diagram of an attack using Shellshock.
Attacker → crafts a value for an environment variable containing malicious command(s) → uses a mechanism to introduce the bad data into a system → the value gets assigned to a variable →the variable gets exported to an instance of Bash → Bash executes the malicious command(s) → bad things start happening
The scope of the article section that we are discussing here, “exploit vectors”, covers the steps from where the bad data has been crafted, to the point where Bash executes the malicious command(s). Of course all the possibilities of what happens after the malicious command(s) execute are way beyond the scope of this article. Just as the motivations of the attacker are of no concern. I thought that was understood, but I guess not.
This section just needs to fully explain the types of vectors that could be used to get the the malicious code into a system and executed by Bash.

This discussion is not about OR content, it's about whether of not to include the section on expoit vectors, and how to organize it. the history of shells in general is that syntax (especially quoting, piping) is difficult to get correct AND different between competing shells, and that parsing might be flawed or cause something one didn't first expect. documentation focused on getting it right. whatever happens: it was limited to impacting the user running it. it's not suid.

there was never any concept that one might "abuse every part of sh(1) to find a parse error that allowed user to create a file owned by user". infact flaws are taken advantage of at times and called features and or compatibility!

again total non-sense. the proper perspective is: it cannot allow user to become another user. if user can run flawed software that creates a file: is not a security issue.

it's "an update" maybe but not a security issue. and one that may be targeted at causing old scripts to fail (that has YET to be seen as T/F)

so when are you fixing zsh(1), csh(1), ksh(1) for "parse flaws" huh? i thought so. total bull.

SUMMARY 1: under no circumstances would one allow users to pass args to a root owned shell (only an idiot would think that could ever be secure old unix docs told you so)

You do understand that this allows a form of command injection that was not expected prior to the discovery of the bug? You can become another user by fooling a program running as another user. About the discovery.

I discovered it in the morning (UK) of 2014-09-12 and reported it at Fri, 12 Sep 2014 16:10:35 +0100 to Chet, and the security contacts of Debian, Red Hat, Ubuntu and Mandriva (SUSE added later) including details of the bug and the SSH and HTTP (Apache header) vectors and mitigation and a bit fat warning that it was very serious and not to be disclosed.

First patch by Chet at 2014-09-12 16:32:17 -0400, but was easily bypassed. Ensued a discussion on that original list, several patch iterations, whether or not to harden at this point and how, whether or not to output error messages on parsing error, additional vectors, scope, detection methods (IDS...), other affected shells, local privilege escalation?, whether localisation can bypass the fix, the impact of two env vars with the same name, backward compatibility, who to contact early... Of course, I have no visibility of what was discussed internally at Red Hat/Ubuntu/Mandriva...

I suggested the name "bashdoor" on that list on Sun, 14 Sep 2014 14:29:48 +0100.

A release schedule with public disclosure on the 24th at 14:00 UTC and early notification to other unix and linux vendors on the 22nd and select infrastructure provider notification (such as CDNs including Microsoft) on the 23rd proposed on the 16th by Florian.

Chet had patches for the final (before disclosure) fix for the current and all past versions of bash up to 3.0 by 2014-09-16 22:00:02 -0400 (from diff dates)

bashdoor.com was registered (not by me) with a creation date of 2014-09-24 13:59 UTC sometime before 2014-09-24 06:59:10Z according to whois. Florian also said here that someone brought the early notification sent to vendors/infrastructure to the press, so someone obviously intended to take it to the press. I don't know whom.

To answer the other post. The feature was definitely not in 1.05 nor 1.12 (the source of which can be found on the web), but was in 1.13.5. Chet confirmed (to me and news outlets) that it was added in 1.13.

Is Shellshock really a security bug in bash?

The idea of a security bug in a program that allows users to destroy files strikes me as silly. No shell, including bash, was ever originally intended to be executed indirectly by someone who had the ability to manipulate environment variable values. Arguably, the CGI mechanism that allows that is the security issue.

I think characterizing Shellshock as security bug in bash is misleading at best. It's certainly a bug in bash - but what makes the whole thing a security bug is the CGI mechanism, which is utilized only a small percentage of systems that have bash. I suggest the introduction be more clear about this.

It is very simple. Bash executes codes that it is not supposed to execute. It fails to properly escape user input allowing an injection attack. This is a security vulnerability in bash by any objective measure. Bash is not behaving as it is supposed to and this is causing severe security issues. I know that it was considered a security issue, because many CGI scripts invoke some bash scripts to produce an output, and there is nothing wrong with that on its own. It allows writing some servers easily, and if proper care is taken for input sanitization it works just fine. It is not that the environmental variables are inherited, or that they should contain values only, and they were not properly parsed, because Bash's PROMPT_COMMAND environmental variable by design allows to run arbitrary commands. The main problem with Shellshock is that when using CGI, all the input headers and URL data are put into HTTP_xyz, QUERY_STRING and PATH_INFO environmental variables. And that is fine too, becasue it is not possible to put stuff into PROMPT_COMMAND for example, and all HTTP servers will ensure that other environment variables are sane (i.e. PS1, or LANG, or HOME, BASH_ENV, etc, and some of these are even ignored when run in 'privileged' mode using bash -p), and there is no direct way to add new or modify existing variables other than the HTTP_xyz ones, which are not going to conflict with any existing variable used by shell. The expectation, and the design of environment variables, is that they just carry some strings, and if they are not used by the shell in any particular way, they shall remain just strings, and not interpreted in any specific way. I think the "fix" for Shellshock has broken this. You used to be able to do this:

That no longer works in versions of bash with the Shellshock fix.

I'm using bash 4.2.45 (released 7th March 2013 [5]), which precedes all the Shellshock patching. Using that version of bash, the code you've written behaves as below.

Using a fairly recent version of bash, 4.3.28(2) (released 1st October 2014 [6]), I see the same (consistent) behaviour.

You're relying on undocumented behavior. The documented way to export functions to a Bash instance is to use "export -f" within Bash. Bash has always handled the details of how to export the functions, which is why nobody thought about them for so long. The guidelines apply even if the name is not registered. The rules actually boil down to the opposite of that quote. Sentence case typically overrides preferred styling. The quote you give above is related to mathematical notation and programming languages were case changes meaning and is not the general case The other exception is pretty much single letter lower case followed by uppercase, such as eBay, iPod. Hm, it could be tweaked for sure, but that would unnecessarily complicate the section title. In addition, I've seen this capitalization issue in section titles and sentences numerous times in a large number or articles. That makes me wonder whether it would make sense to adjust the guidelines, so that "the correct case should always be retained" is extended beyond mathematical notation and programming languages? The name Stéphane Chazelas is introduced without any mention of who he is. Is his name relevant? If so, he should be described in some way, even if it is just "a Unix user". The escaped characters, "\166\165\154\156\145\162\141\142\154\145" is ASCII for "vulnerable".

$ echo $'\166\165\154\156\145\162\141\142\154\145'
vulnerable

The dollar substitution converts the backslashes to ASCII, but if we escape the dollar:

echo \$'\166\165\154\156\145\162\141\142\154\145'
$\166\165\154\156\145\162\141\142\154\145

On a vulnerable system:

$ X='() { (a)=>\' bash -c "echo echo \$'\166\165\154\156\145\162\141\142\154\145'"
bash: X: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `='
bash: X: line 1: `'
bash: error importing function definition for `X'
$ cat echo
vulnerable

On a non vulnerable system, it will simply output $\166\165\154\156\145\162\141\142\154\145 instead of date.

I found a mirror on Bloomberg (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-09-30/shellshock-draws-hacker-attacks-sparks-race-to-patch-bug), but I do not know how to edit a citation.
