Inappropriately included section earmarked for deletion

[edit]

The section (on Byron Williams) that was removed (and now apparently reinstated) and also the Section "Criticism" (which should indeed be similarly removed) have no place in the article on the Tides Centre and should be permanently deleted. Neither section has any relevance to what the Tides Centre is. They do not help define it or describe it. It is akin to putting a section on say, Guy Fawkes, in an envyclopaedic article on the British Houses of Parliament.Barmispain (talk) 22:16, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed a section of this article that was about a person arrested in 2010 on suspicion of attacking the Tides Center - it didn't appear directly relevant to this article. It might be suitable for its own article, but that would raise concerns with WP:BLP1E - this didn't seem like a notable event in any case. Robofish (talk) 20:58, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This change should not be permanent. Currently we have a man who claims he was influenced by Glenn Beck's program on Fox News in his attempted assassination of Tides Foundation employees. Now, the Tides Foundation is calling on CEO's of advertisers to have their commercials pulled. This could turn out to be a "notable" event. --71.56.218.237 (talk) 22:46, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I came to this article specifically to find out more about the attack; it is being mentioned in passing in quite a few news articles. Here is the version of the article prior to Robofish's edit. -- 119.31.121.84 (talk) 00:22, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I included sections on Beck and Williams that should be relevant. --The Cunctator (talk) 12:44, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I feel that Bleck's conspiracy theorty is ill-fitting for this article; if it was, then there should be a section in Dubyuh's page about how he's possibly a Lizardman from outer space. --Xavier Orona (talk) 20:53, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Citizendium Foundation

[edit]

I am not sure if I have my info correct or not, but there is a possibility that Tides Center no longer funds the Citizendium Foundation. This may signify that they no longer officially consider Citizendium Foundation as one of their "Current Projects". Could someone who is less prone than myself to goof up the information check on this (if said information is available)? I don't want to take them off the list of "Current Projects" and place them into the first list (projects that started under them) unless that information is accurate. Thanks, 67.182.237.57 (talk) 00:44, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is still listed on the page "Donate to a Tides Center Project". --Pmsyyz (talk) 05:11, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear. I'm glad I didn't change anything. :) Thanks for checking. 67.182.237.57 (talk) 00:16, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Byron Williams and Glenn Beck

[edit]

I don't understand why Glenn Beck's conspiracy theories get included in this article, yet in regards to Byron Williams, Glenn Beck's involvement in the issue is nowhere to be found? There's just a mysterious reference to "civil discourse" but no connection. Is it really an encyclopedia's job to pussy-foot around the facts for fear you'll upset some Glenn Beck supporters? While Byron Williams did say that Glenn Beck didn't inspire him to do it, it should be noted that Glenn Beck was brought up for a reason. Actually multiple reasons including the facts that Byron Williams claimed Beck "blew his mind" and claimed Beck didn't "do enough" to take care of the Tides Foundation. There are many ties with Byron Williams and Glenn Beck... you just don't find them on Wikipedia for some reason.

Updates for introduction and infobox

[edit]

Hello, Are any editors willing to help improve the introduction and infobox? The infobox is outdated and inaccurate in places. For example: Tides does not only operate using donor advised funds, it does not have an endowment and it has a new mission statement. To show editors what I have in mind, I prepared the following infobox that could be incorporated:

I also prepared a draft of an introduction that better describes Tides and how it operates. The current introduction paragraph describes Tides as a donor advised fund. While that is one of Tides' services, it does not encompass all Tides does.

Extended content

Tides is a public charity and fiscal sponsor whose work focuses on social equality, human rights, the environment, education and health.[1][2][3] It was founded in San Francisco in 1976. Through donor advised funds, Tides distributes money from donors to other organizations, which are often politically liberal. Tides also offers fiscal sponsorships, management services and manages two centers in San Francisco and New York offering collaborative spaces for social ventures and other nonprofits. Tides comprises separate legal entities, including the Tides Foundation, Tides Center, Tides Network, Tides Two Rivers Fund.[4]

@Woebegone: Looking forward to your feedback. If you have questions, I'm happy to answer them here. Thank you, RD at Tides (talk) 22:11, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Woebegone: Thanks for your recent edits to update this article. If you have questions regarding my other proposed edits in this edit request, let me know! Thank you, RD at Tides (talk) 18:45, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Woebegone: Thanks for your edits to the introduction. Can we clarify that Tides distributes money through donor-advised funds? That is an important distinction to be made in order to accurately describe how Tides provides money to other organizations.
Also, please let me know if you have any questions on updating the infobox. The current infobox contains several bits of outdated information (including the organization's mission statement and financial information) and misleading details (it does not only offer donor-advised funds).
Thank you, RD at Tides (talk) 20:40, 12 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Connor Behan: Thanks for your edits to the infobox. This is looking better already. There are still a few things that need attention. Would you mind reviewing?

Infobox

  • We can delete the Method parameter, as "donor advised fund" is now under Services
  • Mission contains Tides' former mission statement. The current mission statement is: "Tides accelerates the pace of social change, working with innovative partners to solve society's toughest problems"
  • I also prepared text for the Purpose parameter: Equality and human rights, sustainable environment, quality education, healthy individuals and communities

Introduction

Lastly, the introduction needs some clarification. I think it is important to note that Tides distributes money through donor-advised funds. I recommend the first three sentences read as follows: Tides is a public charity and fiscal sponsor whose work focuses on social equality, human rights, the environment, education and health.[1][2][3] It was founded in San Francisco in 1976. Through donor advised funds, Tides distributes money from donors to other organizations, which are often politically liberal.

Thanks for your continued interest with this request. RD at Tides (talk) 17:03, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The two things I overlooked should now be fixed. However, I have not added the "Purpose" parameter. I don't see it used very often, and when I do, it is not drawn from an organization's own words. Things like this that don't fit in the mission statement should just be explained in the article where there is room to give context. Connor Behan (talk) 17:51, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I will mark this request as partially implemented. Thanks, Connor Behan! jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 02:43, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Are any editors willing to add Tides' new logo to the infobox? The new logo has been uploaded and can be found here: File:Tides_(organization)_logo.png.

Hi RD at Tides, done. Thank you! --Gnom (talk) 18:49, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Gnom! Tides also has a new tagline, "Daring Change," and isn't using "What's Possible" anymore, if you're willing to make that change to the infobox. Thank you! RD at Tides (talk) 19:26, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also done. --Gnom (talk) 19:34, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Now it's out

[edit]

...That Wikipedia is a huge contributor to this organization, though it is rather concealed. This should probably be mentioned, along with the current (2022) Wikipedia executive that ran it for several years. GenQuest "scribble" 07:08, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WP isn't a contribute to anything. Wikimedia doesn't 'contribute' to it, but it runs the WMF endowment (as a donor-advised endowment fund, giving money only back to WMF / Wikimedia projects). It's a bit confusing, and should be better explained on the endowment's own pages. – SJ + 02:43, 24 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification. Appreciated. Regards, GenQuest "scribble" 07:02, 24 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
