Weevil tablet

[edit]

What is a weevil tablet? I do not find ANYTHING about this. Is it like rat poison against weevils? Or what? "Suicide methods" does not bring ANY answer to this question. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Royalrec (talkcontribs) 14:04, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is a highly toxic substance that is used as a pesticide (to kill weevils and the like). It can be fatal if consumed by humans. It contains aluminium phosphide and emits phosphine gas. If you do a Google search, you will get many hits ... which all say essentially what I have stated here. Here are two links: [1] and [2]. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro, 21 August 2009)
From the second link that I have referenced above [3], it states the following. How to Store Maize and How to Use Weevil Tablets - How to Store Maize: Shelling maize and storing it in a silo with the correct moisture content is not the end of the line. Maize can be attacked by weevils in silos even if it was weevil free during shelling. It is very important that maize is treated with weevil tablets on the first day it is stored in the silo. Do not wait for a number of days before you treat weevils and seal the silo. Your friend would like to warn farmers and the general public that weevil tablets are very poisonous and must be kept under lock and key at all times. The original weevil tablet container must be the only container used for keeping weevil tablets. This container is safe and was designed to prevent the poisonous weevil tablet fumes from leaking. Children and mentally challenged people must not be allowed to handle weevil tablets under any circumstances. Your friend would like to appeal to everyone selling weevil tablets to sell the tablets only in sealed bottles designed by the manufacturer. It is crucial that weevil tablets do not come into contact with human skin. All people handling weevil tablets must wear mouth and nose masks and disposable hand gloves at all times when directly handling weevil tablets. Furthermore, weevil tablets must be stored in a safe place under lock and key at all times and the keys must be stored in a secure place beyond the reach of children. How to Use Weevil Tablets: An official from Ministry of Agriculture recommends that as soon as the maize is stored in a silo, weevil tablets are placed on top of the maize in a paper bag or envelope and then the silo is sealed at the top and bottom. The fumes will penetrate to the bottom of the silo. He emphasized that the weevil tablets and the weevil tablet dust must not come into contact with the maize at all times and he recommended that six to nine tablets must be used for every 20 bags. However, people can read instructions on the container. After 21 days the paper bag or envelope containing the remains of the weevil tablets must be removed from the silo and should be buried safely in the ground. Alternatively, one could dispose of the paper bag or envelope containing the weevil tablets by putting it in a plastic bag that does not leak and tying a few knots and throwing it in a pit latrine. Do not put the paper bag or envelope containing weevil tablet dust in a pit latrine or flush it down a toilet. (Joseph A. Spadaro, 21 August 2009)
Thank you for the informative reply, Joseph. I have added it to the article to provide context for those (like myself) who have no idea what a weevil tablet is. Cheers, ponyo (talk) 19:47, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome ... and thanks to you, also. That was a very good idea. I am sure that many people do not know what a weevil tablet is. I, myself, had no idea until I came across the news of this woman's death. Your edits are helpful to address that issue. I also changed the wiki-link in this article for "weevil tablet" to a better link. The original linked "weevil tablet" to "methods of suicide". I changed it so that "weevil tablet" now links to "pesticide poisoning". A much more helpful link, I believe. Thanks again. (Joseph A. Spadaro, 22 August 2009)
