You don't cite Ravelo 2016 in the article. It should be moved to a "Further reading" section.
Good catch. I added the book because I intended to use it, but I didn't because I forgot to request it from my local library. I can see the info on Google Books and can cite it now, but I cannot see the page numbers. It won't be appropriate for "Further reading" because the book's topic is about something else. Can I add the cite as "pg=na"?
What I'd do is as you said, but add an external link (eg pg=[url na]) to the search you did to find the information, for verifiability.
I deleted the book and requested it through an interlibrary loan. I should get it in a couple of weeks. Either way, all the mentions of the individual in the book are cited elsewhere in the article with different sources. We are good now.
Are there any updates on what happened to the subject since 2013?
Thank you for bringing this up so it can be on record. Short answer is no, there is no public info about him after his conviction was overturned in 2013. I've looked into government archives, newspaper databases, done advanced searches on Google, but nothing comes up. I reached out to the Mexican federal government several months back through their Ley de Transparencia (English: Transparency Law) requesting information about Mr. Vázquez Mireles's legal status (if he was convicted, how long was his conviction, what charges was he convicted of, if/when he was released, if he had any outstanding charges or if he was facing trial). I received a negative response, where authorities indicated that I needed Vázquez Mireles's approval to receive such information. I have a PDF from the Mexican government with their response, should you or anyone else need it.
If that's so, is it theoritically possible that he's been released? Wouldn't that affect the fair use rationale for the image?
Theoretically, yes. However, I think we should only go by what we have in reliable sources. The Mexican government did not confirm his status to me. Either way, this man is a U.S. fugitive; if he was released from prison in Mexico after fulfilling a sentence, a free picture of this man would be difficult to get since he is associated to a paramilitary group and is wanted by a foreign government.
@Fiamh: I got the image from the U.S. government's criminal chart. But his image was first published by the Specialized Unit Against Organized Crime, a former branch of the Mexican government (see here, page 4). Based on the copyright requirements, it is not available under free domain. The U.S. government simply published it but it was not created by a U.S. employee.
