Vappodes is a synonym[edit]

Searching the Kew Checklist of Selected Plants on 13 September 2011 shows Vappodes as a synonym of Dendrobium, and Vappodes phalaenopsis as a synonym of Dendrobium biggibum. This article should be renamed to Dendrobium biggibum and Vappodes phalaenopsis should redirect there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dennis cs chuah (talkcontribs) 11:56, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merger discussion[edit]

Vappodes phalaenopsisDendrobium bigibbum – The Taxonomy of this orchid has been messy but I believe the taxonomy is fairly well settled now. Considering this orchid is a floral emblem of Queensland, Australia, I think it is important to update the taxonomy to it's proper place. I suggest moving the contents of the article to Dendrobium bigibbum. It certainly does not belong at Vappodes phalaenopsis as mentioned by Dennis cs chuah in 2011. ~ Mellis (talk) 06:05, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts @Plantdrew, Peter coxhead, and Dennis cs chuah:? Since Taxobox is already pointing to Dendrobium bigibbum, I think it's just a matter of committing the time to actually moving the content.~ Mellis (talk) 07:31, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I support moving it to the more broadly circumscribed Dendrobium. –Hyperik talk 23:48, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Plantdrew, Peter coxhead, Dennis cs chuah, and Hyperik:
Vappodes phalaenopsis is regarded as a synonym of Dendrobium bigibbum var. superbum by the WCSP.[1] My suggestion is to rename this article as D. bigibbum var. superbum with a separate article for D. bigibbum. Jones regards V. bigibba (mauve butterfly orchid) and V. phalaenopsis (Cooktown orchid) as separate species. I am working through the Australian dendrobiums and happy to do that. So we would then have D. biggibum (mauve butterfly orchid) and D. bigibbum var. superbum (Cooktown orchid).Gderrin (talk) 22:02, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Gderrin: I'm a great admirer of the work you do on Australian orchids and other taxa (not to speak of the very large number of entries you've added to the list of botanists by author abbreviation), so I'm happy to go along with your suggestion, although in general articles on botanical varieties are to be avoided – could D. bigibbum var. superbum not be dealt with inside the D. bigibbum article? Peter coxhead (talk) 22:34, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the compliment ::@Peter coxhead:. I agree with you (re. varieties). There is very little difference beween the two varieties, apart from the presence of a white spot on the labellum of var. bigibba (and distribution/range). Does seem a pity though, not to have a separate article for the "Cooktown orchid", which strictly speaking, var. bigibba is not. Whatever, Vappodes phalaenopsis is a synonym. Needs a name change and fingers are itching.Gderrin (talk) 22:58, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Gderrin, I trust your judgement here. Do what you think is best. Plantdrew (talk) 02:11, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
