Michael Jordan of bass

[edit]

There's no citation for this quote. I figured that counts as "poorly sourced" info, which we're supposed to get rid of, plus the "sometimes referred to" seems a bit vague to me.

When looking to find evidence of Victor being called the Michael Jordan of bass, much of what I found was referencing this wiki. However, I tracked down a similar quote at the Oteil Burbridge site that that is attributed to a Huntsville Times article (link has died).

Apparently Allman Brothers member Derek Trucks called Oteil Burbridge the Michael Jordan of bass. Any consensus on whether the comment in Victor's article might have come from a misattribution of that quote? If there are no objections or sources, I'll just strike the Michael Jordan comment.

I'll strike the "Michael Jordan of bass" line. This leaves the introductory section very very sparse in light of the addition of the infobox. I'll see what I can add to help beef it up a bit. -Tjkiesel 22:38, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Wooten"?

[edit]

Time for a stupid question. How do you pronounce "Wooten"? I've never heard it pronounced and I have always assumed it rhymes with "rootin'" [i.e., rooting], but it looks Dutch or German and that makes me wonder if it is really pronounced as though it sounds like "votin'" [i.e., voting]. El charangista 13:59, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're basically right with "rootin'", shading toward the even more appreviated "root'n". There are a few songs on his various albums where you can hear his last name pronounced. A few of the Flecktones live albums feature his name as well. That brings up a question: Would adding a pronunciation guide to the beginning of the article be consistent with other WikiProject Biography articles? -Tjkiesel 20:18, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Adding pronunciation guides to -anything- is a good idea in my book. And thank you. El charangista 03:50, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
True however, FYI it is pronounced, rhyming with "rootin' tootin'".

I just picked up his new cd (palmystery) at the concert in Kansas City tonight 2-9-08, as well as the one titled 'a show of hands' and one of the track titles is 'Radio W-OO-10'. seems somewhat phonetic to me-- so I'm guessing that's how it's said. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.207.205.87 (talk) 07:47, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move up to Start rating?

[edit]

I think this page might deserve to be moved up to a Start rating according to the Biography Project scale. The example of a Start rated biography is A. J. Croce, which I think the Victor Wooten page matches pretty well in overall detail, though this page is lacking more biographical history on Wooten. Any thoughts? If this article is still a stub, what do we need to get it to a start rating? If it's already a Start rated article, let's indicate so and see what we can do about moving it up to a B. (Sorting out some material in the Life and Other bands and techniques sections might be a start) -Tjkiesel 00:01, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Made the move. Explained my justifications. -Tjkiesel 04:00, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Music Lesson

[edit]

I think there should be a bit about his book "The Music Lesson" in here, but I'm sure I'm not the one that should write it... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.206.140.226 (talk) 23:36, 29 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Victor Wooten is an alien from outer space.

Bit of text removed

[edit]

Hey, I rewrote the section "Techniques" to try and make it read a bit better, removed some tonal passivity, and added (I think) a nice description of his live playing. However, I also removed a few words that I want to mention. I forget the exact bit, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but the wording implied Victor was the inventor of the various techniques discussed, which I'm sure even he would agree isn't true. (I wanted to state the he uses some of these techniques in a way that seems to synthetically achieve a quantum leap ahead of previous players -- but that seemed a tad subjective. lol So, I settled for comparing him to Vai and Van Halen. ;) So anyways, I think the 'graph is now improved, but if some of you Wooten scholars know of a technique he's commonly credited with inventing, pls put it in (with a cite, ofc). BTW, keep up the good work, ya'll, nice article. :) Eaglizard 22:06, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flecktones

[edit]

Somewhere in the introductory paragraph it should say that he is the bassist of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones!  PN57  07:04, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I'm amazed it wasn't there already... --Fru1tbat (talk) 14:24, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

[edit]

In the two pictures on here he is wearing different clothes so the events must be different but the captions says he is at the same place.

Really Good

[edit]

This is a good article . Still more information based on his present project can be added--Tunedguitar (talk) 04:25, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article is a mess

[edit]

Articulation section: What is the point of this paragraph? Who is this Gary Dashmuth customer and why should I care what he "emphasized"? Also it makes it sound like Dashmuth wrote "The Music Lesson".

World Class section has the tone of a gushing fanboy.

Early Life section: first it says he started playing when he was 2. At the end of the section it says he started playing when he was 3. Conflicting information in the same section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.121.18.252 (talk) 10:20, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaned up.

[edit]

This article was pretty miserable when I looked at it, so I removed a lot of random and excessive paragraphs/sections, as well as a lot of non-passive voice.

It should probably be a lot longer now, however, because I had to remove a lot of content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ascii234 (talkcontribs) 02:13, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment

The article has several of the listed prerequisites of a Start class article on the Assessment scale. -Tjkiesel 03:59, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

== Priority ==

Rated as Mid importance. Per the Quality scale, Mid must be "important in their discipline". Cursory examination of bass literature, comments in interviews and writing by notable bassists and the contemporary history of the instrument bears that out. -Tjkiesel 13:20, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bluegrass

[edit]

Since he plays in the Flecktones, shouldn't bluegrass be listed as a genre in this infobox? Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 17:55, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Victor Wooten and Nitro

[edit]

I don't make edits, but thought I'd point out for someone else to potentially fix that Wooten was only a session/recording artist with Nitro. The intro paragraph is a bit deceptive in that it makes it sound like he joined the band. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.137.18.40 (talk) 14:37, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wooten's other endeavors

[edit]

I've added two links to the external links section: Victor Wooten Center for Music and Nature and Wooten Woods to the external links section. Both are his personal endeavors and important to be included with the article. 2600:1700:EA01:1090:1172:C95E:8AD:9241 (talk) 05:50, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
