Cost of Construction

[edit]

It says that the cost was 10 million but doesn't give a currency! Please clarify! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.98.88.2 (talk) 16:48, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed! :-) MyrtleMyrtlegroggins (talk) 07:20, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lead picture

[edit]

I've undone the recent lead picture replacement here as the old photo showed the monument in bright daylight, not shadows and there's a much better pic (in my opinion) showing the lake already in the article. --NeilN talk to me 18:30, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Copyedit

[edit]

Hello, I've just about finished a major copy edit. Please let me know if there is anything that you would like me to change and we can talk about it. I'd love to go and see this building one day! I'll be back to try and improve the references. I've never done a map on wikipedia, so would need help with that. I also have to go back and re-read the MOS on honorifics with the English royals. With kind regards, Myrtle.Myrtlegroggins (talk) 07:17, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think I've just about finished a copyedit. As always, let me know if there are any concerns or suggestions. Regards, Myrtle. Myrtlegroggins (talk) 10:44, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Replacing infobox image

[edit]

@Ujwala A Krishna: If an editor objects to your edits you may go ahead still to make a bold edit, but if your edit is being repeatedly reverted and you are being asked to seek consensus and you choose not to that tends to verge on being an edit war. Violating the WP:3RR rule may also attract a block and loss of editing privileges. You have an opportunity here to seek consensus to replace the infobox image. My objection stands that the image you have been adding and replacing the existing image with is not a quality image showing the monument properly and is hence inappropriate for the infobox. Wikipedia is not the place to insert random images and promote your photography (see: WP:PROMOTION). Per policy you are to seek consensus from other editors to replace the image now that your edits have been objected to (see: WP:CONS). Please refrain from changing the infobox image again without a consensus as that would verge on being disruptive. Please also refer to WP:BRD and WP:CONSBUILD. Victoria Memorial

[edit]

The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Central Kolkata, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Empress Victoria, now a museum under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, is the largest monument in the world which is dedicated to a royal.[2] The memorial lies on the Maidan and is one of the famous monuments of Kolkata.

Empress Victoria In January 1901, on the death of Empress Victoria,[3] then Lord Curzon, suggested the creation of a fitting memorial. Lord Curzon proposed the construction of a grand building with a museum and gardens.[4]

Curzon said,

"Let us, therefore, have a building, stately, spacious, monumental and grand, to which every newcomer in Kolkata will turn, to which all the resident population, European and Native, will flock, where all classes will learn the lessons of history and see revived before their eyes the marvels of the past."[5]

The Prince of Wales, laid the foundation stone on 4 January 1906, and it was formally opened to the public in 1921.[6]

In 1912, before the construction of the Victoria Memorial was finished, Emperor George V announced the transfer of the capital of India from Kolkata to New Delhi.[7] Thus, the Victoria Memorial was built in what would be a provincial city rather than a capital.

The Victoria Memorial was mainly funded by British Officials, & individuals of India.[5] The Politicians and people of India responded generously to Lord Curzon's appeal for funds, and the total cost of construction of the monument, amounting to one crore, five lakhs of Rupees (₹), was entirely derived from their voluntary subscriptions.[8]

The construction of the Victoria Memorial was delayed by Curzon's departure from India in 1905 with a subsequent loss of local enthusiasm for the project and the need for testing of the foundations. The Victoria Memorial's foundation stone was set in 1906 and the building opened in 1921.[9] The work of construction was entrusted to Messrs. Martin & Co. of Kolkata. Work on the superstructure began in 1910. After 1947, some additions were made to the Memorial.

A smaller victoria memorial also got constructed in Hardoi District of central provinces which is now converted into a city club for recreation . It is a building whose compound also saw Mahatma Gandhi addressing Hardoi during 1930's 2405:205:C8EC:A21F:4E39:84B0:B216:CCAC (talk) 06:14, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see, but why are you writing it here? Looks nothing other than absolute vandalism. Michri michri (talk) 16:46, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
