Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on September 12, 2022.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that a television station spent so little on programming that a media columnist called it the "IOUs of Cincinnati"?
Current status: Good article

Untitled[edit]

It might be useful if, in the history section, someone could put the years when the station changed its call letters and network affiliations. -- Grev -- Talk 02:53, August 21, 2005 (UTC)

Star Tower[edit]

Does this station broadcast from Star Tower? If I recall correctly, the signage at the tower's base is similar to WSTR's old "Star 64" logo. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 07:07, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Former logos[edit]

It doesn't make much sense to have a "gallery" containing just two logos – fair use images to boot. Besides, this isn't Wikimedia Commons; Wikipedia articles contain images to illustrate text, not the other way around. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 06:45, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MyNetworkTV affiliation[edit]

Akmarch gave this blog post as a source in stating that WSTR will drop its MyNetworkTV affiliation. I think the blogger misread this Enquirer article:

My Network TV said it will essentially get out of the business of presenting original programming except for professional wrestling, a sign of how the economy is hurting the television business.
The network, seen on WSTR-TV (Channel 64) here, was created in 2006 for stations after the old WB and UPN networks combined to form the CW. It is owned by News Corp., parent company for Fox Broadcasting, Fox News, FX and MySpace.
...
Jon Lawhead, Channel 64 general manager, declined to comment about how his station's programming would change.
"We don't yet fully know what it entails. We should know something in the next day or two," Lawhead said.

As you can see, the article was reporting on MyNetworkTV, not WSTR in particular. They just asked the station for a reaction. So I'm removing Akmarch's addition.

W22DE/W66AQ[edit]

I'm not sure if W22DE (former W66AQ) in Dayton is broadcasting on any channel now that WCPO has moved to RF 22. When it was broadcasting post-digital transition, it was a simulcast of WRGT 45.2 "MyTV Dayton", not a satellite of WSTR.

Based on a mistaken reading of a poorly worded website, another Wikipedia user has associated W22DE with WWRD-LP in Dayton. It definitely shouldn't be there, although I'm not totally comfortable with associating it with WSTR. It would appear it's still considered a translator for WSTR. Does anyone have any idea what plans Sinclair has or had for W22DE. It probably should be referenced somewhere. Perhaps at WRGT? DTV transition date[edit]

Article claims that all Sinclair stations shut down their analog signals on the original DTV transition date, February 17, 2009. WTTE in Columbus, OH did. However, others transitioned on the later date, June 12, 2009, e.g. Columbus' WSYX and Dayton's WRGT-TV. Dayton's WKEF maintained analog nightlight service for two weeks after June 12. --Chaswmsday (talk) 13:13, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

W22DE - 2013 License Renewal[edit]

According to the 2013 License Renewal Appication filed with the FCC, W22DE is still on the air. (See Section V, Question 2a.) They have not filed for a construction permit to convert the station to digital. Just an educated guess, but I'm guessing that Sinclair continues to operate the translator in order to interfere with the WCPO signal, blocking the WCPO signal and making WKEF the default ABC affiliate where the signal is blocked. And I am also assuming that they can legally continue to broadcast because this is an analog signal much like analog and digital signals would run into each other during the period leading to transition to DTV Only signals?

Again, these are just educated guesses, but an application stating to the FCC that your signal is still on means that your signal is still on!

Here is the license renewal application:

Hacking and network affiliations[edit]

Sinclair Broadcasting Group, which operates WSTR, was hacked and is undergoing a ransomware attack. As a result, all of it channels and subchannels are only broadcasting TBD and WSTR doesn't know when normal network affiliation broadcasting will resume. I edited it and an editor reverted, claiming NPOV neutral point of view and brought the discussion to my talk page here. I think it should stay as it is a major disruption to WSTR stations, my edit is neutral and we should discuss it here. --P37307 (talk) 21:24, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Paging @Sammi Brie: Mvcg66b3r (talk) 21:59, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It belongs in the body as a significant disruption to the station's operations with a cited source. No question. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 22:13, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sammi Brie and P3707: Of course, it may need to be rewritten somewhat. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 22:47, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you missed the first one? I don't think that's addressed by the changes you made. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 20:29, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Logos and image appropriately tagged; sources are reliable.

  • "Though WBTI briefly expanded its commercial schedule": if WBTI was a hybrid of ad-supported and subscription, and the subscription programming increased (to 20 hours/day), how can the commercial schedule have increased too? Should this be "re-expanded"?
  • When does the limit of 20 hours a day change? It sounds like in June 83 only 90 minutes of non-free TV was broadcast on weekdays.
    • June '82. [1] A citation has been added.
  • Suggest linking "wrote down" to Write-off#Write-down.
    • Done
  • What's a translator? Can we link to an entry in the glossary? And "carriage" is also not clear; I guess it means the equivalent of market penetration, but even if I have that right a link would be helpful.
    • Linked in this article and also added to the glossary. The glossary needs lots of work and is missing some entries that it really needs—that's one of them. I suspect it is a bit UK-heavy in terminology. If you see something and go "glossary?", I will add it. To be quite honest, I had not heard of it until one of your recent reviews.
Not too surprising -- you're probably the editor least in need of consulting it. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 20:29, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Suggest linking "receiver" to receivership.
    • Done
  • "From 2016 to 2022, WSTR was the television home of FC Cincinnati, airing all matches not chosen for national TV": as far as I can tell it's not that FC Cincinnati has signed up with another station for 2023, just that the 2023 contract is not signed yet, and may well be with WSTR. Can we avoid making it sound as the relationship has definitely ended?
    • Read the footnote! Major League Soccer required all of its teams to commit no further than 2022 for local TV deals so that the league could sell national and local TV rights together, and that new deal displaces all local TV contracts (as noted in the quote in the reference in the footnote). You can hear it from me, or you can hear it from Don Garber: [2]
"Many years ago, we went to our clubs and said, all of your local deals need to expire by the end of the [2022] season," Garber told reporters in December 2021. "All of your streaming deals need to expire. All of your data deals, all of your sports betting deals, everything that has a touch point with a consumer is all now in a package that we’re able to engage with traditional media companies that are transforming themselves digitally, to new media companies."
Oops, missed that. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 20:29, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Under "Subchannels", I had to look up ATSC (I think I failed to comment on this on your other articles) and I see there's no ATSC 1.0 article. How about a link to just ATSC from that first mention?
    • Turns out that the retronym ATSC 1.0 as a redirect did not exist. It should have, so I've rectified that error. Linked. TV transmission arrangements in the US have become more...and more...and more complex over the last few years...

  • Comment only: In the hook, shouldn't "television station" be piped instead? Right now, it might be misinterpreted that this hook is about some "IOUs of Cincinnati", and not a television station. (But maybe that's just me.) --LordPeterII (talk) 20:27, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
