Renaming
[edit]This museum seems to have been re-branded from North Somerset Museum to Weston-super-Mare Museum. An IP editor has changed the text, however should the article itself be renamed?— Rod talk 06:55, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Requested move 2 December 2018
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
Moved as proposed. The extensive discussion is not in derogation of the proposed move. Whether the New Jersey institution requires a title change is a separate matter. bd2412 T 16:22, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
Weston-super-Mare Museum → Weston Museum – Please could I have the page 'Weston-super-Mare Museum' moved to 'Weston Museum' in order to reflect the Weston-super-Mare museum's present and correct name. It is no longer called 'Weston-super-Mare Museum', as was noted in an earlier Talk comment by user Rodw. I am also planning to publish a substantial update to 'W-s-M Museum' in the near future (several thousand characters) and would like to make it the primary topic for the term 'Weston Museum' The English museum of this name already receives more monthly pageviews than the New Jersey namesake according to http://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews. I am hoping to further encourage more views from interested local residents following the publication of my re-write. A work-in-progress draft of my re-write can be seen at User:JonSC/sandbox/Weston-super-Mare_Museum. Thank you! JonSC (talk) 14:27, 2 December 2018 (UTC) --Relisted. - Support Per its website and Visit Weston-super-Mare. Although it is acnoledged that it is in Weston-super-Mare, the "-super-Mare" doesn't appear to be part of the museum's name. Crouch, Swale (talk) 14:34, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
- Comment I'd note that the proposed title was taken by one in New Jersey, however based on views [[1]] I'd say we can move it and add a hatnote per WP:2DABPRIMARY. If this is not moved then it could stay as is per WP:NATURAL (since some sources do still use the longer name, but its not clear if they are recent or not) or moved to Weston Museum, Somerset. Crouch, Swale (talk) 14:41, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
- Comment while resolving this issue, we need to strive to achieve consistency. I note these problems in the current setup:
- The New Jersey Museum is currently at Weston Museum (New Jersey). We need to use either parenthetical or comma separated disambiguators in each case. Comma separation seems normal for geographical disambiguators as in this case.
- The museum in somerset has approximately twice the views (including via redirects) of the New Jersey one. Views to both are very low. This appears insufficient for there to be a primary topic per the guidelines.
- Weston Museum is currently a redirect to the new Jersey museum, which has the seme title with a parenthetical disambiguator. This is contrary to WP:PRECISION.
- All in all, a bit of a mess. I tentatively propose the following:
- Weston-super-Mare Museum → Weston Museum, Somerset
- Weston Museum (New Jersey) → Weston Museum, New Jersey
- Weston Museum becomes a DAB page.
- Comment. Not sure about comma disambiguation in an England or more generally a Europe context, however in the U.S., parenthetical disambiguation is used in these cases to differentiate between formal, legal distinctions such as those of cities in states, e.g. Newark, New Jersey, and other entities such as museums. Wouldn't want to mislead readers to think that "Weston Museum" is a town in N.J. Paine Ellsworth, ed. put'r there 01:31, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- For UK articles we use comma disambiguation for buildings etc as well. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:32, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- Since that is the case, and since US articles use parentheses rather than commas, then hasn't CONSISTENCY already been achieved no matter whether or not this article title is moved? Also, while I disagree with MegaSloth on that point, I would agree that the base name should be a disambiguation page. Still neutral in regard to this RM proposal – since I relisted it, I don't want to set a bad example. Paine Ellsworth, ed. put'r there 21:26, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
