William DeVries is an Eagle Scout.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 140.32.75.55 (talkcontribs) 11:53, 6 July 2005 (UTC)

_ _ Yeah, fine. He also was one in his youth, which is what is of slight interest in this article. Yes, once a Marine or Eagle Scout, always one, but there is also a vast difference between being actively engaged in what is inescapable about either status, and having that in one's history. To grasp this, simply picture a homeless heroin or crack addict, and ask if it makes a difference whether his Marine status is active duty or other, and whether his Eagle Scout status involves weekly BSA activities or not. It does, so there is a difference between any Eagle Scout or a Marine, and one who earned that status but stopped making it such a big part of their current life.
_ _ The attitude and significant reality of the once/always equation is of encyclopedic interest in the articles on U.S. Marine Corps and Boy Scouts of America, and perhaps some articles on psych and sociological theory and research. But exercising the once/always slogan, in other articles, as if it were accepted knowledge and usage, is off-topic, PoV, and frankly gives the impression of personal inadequacy that produces obssession with a past accomplishment & past shared practical commitment.
_ _ And even as the former shabby Scout i was, it's embarrassing to see someone going out of their way to associate Scouting with this pathetically neglected article. Perhaps an Eagle Scout will make it a project, as a labor of love.

If you think it's such a sad article, and it could for sure use some work, who don't you work on it? Rlevse 14:55, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Name spellling

[edit]

The original Dutch spelling of this name, see De Vries, was de Vries, but William DeVries appears to spell it DeVries, which is why I moved the article name to William DeVries. Confirmation of how he spells his name would be great. Rlevse 15:01, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:TimeDec10 1984.jpg

[edit]

Image:TimeDec10 1984.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Missing word I can't add

[edit]

In the photo callout, the "Known for" field says:<\br>

Dr. William DeVries and his surgical replaced a diseased heart with the Jarvik-7…

Obviously that should be "surgical team", but I don't know how to edit that area. Somebody? – AndyFielding (talk) 10:48, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Gee, and now I can't edit that, either, to change the bold text to the italicized I intended, or remove the "br" tag, which is apparently misspelled and/or unnecessary. AndyFielding (talk) 10:50, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
