I managed to get one to spawn, basically be letting the cult of sirius alone. They were doing well at screwing with Megapol for me and were neutral. It appears, from my experience, that the cultists summon them. However, having an Overspawn turn up in your city is Not Much Fun At All, and the city was basically FUBARed. You can kill them, but don't expect it to be easy (my tip: ten hoverbikes with uprated engines). Given that in any game where you've let the cult alone from day dot, the only way to salvage the game is pretty much to go back to a really, really early save game, and wipe out the cult as best as possible. I didn't manage to catch one alive, which is a shame. I can't recall being able to research it either. Probably another unfinished thing. Rolinator 07:32, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
Summoned by cultists?This game isn't a Fantasy Rpg,AFAIK the only way to get Overspawn is t wait for a Alien Battleship to drop the Yellow Godzilla to let it loose.And yes,the city gets FUBARED,a mate showed me,tore an appliances factory in HALF with a swing of arm(Holy #£@!).Best not let any ships drop one.I Attacked with my buddy's Valkyries on his computer,and the Overspawn took (I counted) at least 20 30 Lineage Plasma blasts before blowing up(blowing up.Exploding monster,Mad Dox would love this.)
Still,as you say,you can't catch him.But I have its file through savegame editor.
It is heartbreaking that such a majestic game to go unfinished.
- Overspawn are dropped by Alien Motherships and Battleships, but only when things become extremely dire for the Aliens - usually due to your score skyrocketing from shooting down and capturing crashed UFOs. They are a lot of pain to deal with, and most "pros" just recommend ignoring Overspawn. Why? Because as they smash their way through a city, buildings they destroy will fall on them, and eventually kill them. This saves you a lot of trouble as there is no chance for your ships to miss any shots (and end up destroying even more of the city) and will probably not lose you any points in the long run. It is not possible to capture a live Overspawn (although UFOpedia entries for a live Overspawn and many other research topics exist) although they can be researched after you kill one, as presumably the dead body is automatically recovered. As suggested, it's best to just take out the Motherships and Battleships before this thing can be dropped - a squad of Annihilators should put an end to any marauding Motherships or Battleships quite easily. --82.16.98.169 01:26, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I've started tidying up this article. No guarantee I'll get round to finishing it. I've removed some incorrect information too (for example, that Mega-Primus is the only human habitation on Earth, which is incorrect based on official game literature), but paragraph structure and a few other things need sorted. The Best Game Ever

- "Best Game Ever" doesn't quite nail it. I'd say "Best reason for mankind to exist", or "Why the universe was created" are much more suitable phrases that capture the majesty of this, this... there is no word for what this is. It is that awe-inspiring and unique. You can't play a game like this and just walk away from it without feeling like you've touched something that goes beyond anything you've ever experienced before, and that it similarly has touched you. The wildly varied aspects of this game mesh together like the teeth of precision-made gears. A stray grenade in a mission might alter the course of human history, not just give you a -100 to some obsolete gaming concept like "score". Apocalypse is both a symbol of how great games are hindered by real-world constraints, and how they can dazzle, impress, and entertain in spite of them. If Apocalypse were a chick I would ask it to marry me. And if it were a dude, I'd move to Canada.

Turn based vs Simultaneous
[edit]I found the simultaneous gameplay system was actually really good, and much better than turn-based except where the big missile launchers were concerned in some situations (tight quarters) where you'd get pwned. Those jumping mines...absolutely wonderful. Teleport in, arm, drop, repeat ten times, and then teleport out. Then unpause, and watch the enemy splatter in an instant.
As for the learning AI, it was partly implemented, in that you could see the behaviour of the AI go through a few iterations in a logical progression from frontal assault, to flanking attacks, to hiding, and when teleporters arrived, the same progression and then, ultimately, surpise rear assaults. When you became effective against these strategies (ie; you kept winning) the AI seemed to click over to the next. It wasn't really learning, just cycling through pre-set pathing routines to give the illusion. Or so I believe.
The same goes for the political simulator. You could, as mentioned, manipulate the situation and manage essential neutrality. But the price of that, I think, with respect to the Cult of Sirius, is the eventual summoning of an Overspawn, which is a cityfscker. So, while you could do it, if you didn't get to the alien dimension fast enough to avoid an overspawn sodomising the city and ruining your carefully balanced neutrality (ie; the government will hate you and forms alliances against you) you could pretty much get wiped anyway.

AI Learning Is Broken

The "not implemented well" part of 'self learning AI module' was a nice way of saying that it is utterly broken. It does not work! It is not a NPOV issue...
