Tobaku Haōden Zero (賭博覇王伝 零, lit. "Gambling Emperor Legend Zero") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Nobuyuki Fukumoto, who is renowned for his works Kaiji and Akagi. Similar to Fukumoto's other works, this story revolves around gambling at high stakes, this time including more competition and rivalry. The first part started publishing in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine in September 2007 and finished in March 2009. The second part started in July 2011 and finished in May 2013.

Plot

Ukai Zero saves three teens from a Suicide Website, and together chooses to work as 'Robin Hoods' of society. However, one of Zero's friends are caught by an organization, and Zero is forced to enter a gambling competition hosted by a rich old man who is looking for talented gamblers to be his rep player.

Leaving off a couple years after part one, Ukai Zero has teamed up with Suezaki, a yakuza from the part one, and continues to gamble. However, they are only able to gamble for small amounts of money, nowhere near the amount that Zero needs to go up against Zaizen (a multi-trillionaire that held a gambling competition for picking out talented people, including Zero, to be his rep player in part one of the story).

Creating a site to help others in need with his gambling skills, Zero's name begins to spread across the web as the undefeated gambler. From golf, to poker, to a frantic treasure hunt with the stakes of billions of dollars, Zero overcomes numerous difficult yet creative gambles using only his high intellect to support him. Each gamble he wins, and each sum of money he gets brings him a step closer to his goal: to keep a promise to a friend.

Characters

Ukai Zero
Portrayed by: Shigeaki Kato (live-action TV series)[2]

Zero is the main character of the story (hence the title) and is known for his immense talent in gambling. With his intelligence and wit, Zero conquers every gamble, and recognized as an undefeated genius. Despite being able to gamble high stakes without batting an eye, he is very kind, gambling for the sake of others and to retain power in order to better the world.

Suezaki Sakura

Suezaki is a yakuza that happened to pair up with Zero after seeing his talent in Zaizen's gambling competition in hopes that he can win large sums of money. Tagging along with Zero, he acts as Zero's treasurer and brings Zero gambles to play.

Zaizen

Zaizen is a rotten old man with loads of money. He held a huge gambling competition to pick out the best people to be his rep player in gambles and was ready throw away anyone's lives for the expense of his money. He holds huge power and lured people in for the big prize of one trillion yen to whoever won the competition to become "king".
