"10 Minutes" is a song recorded by Korean musician Lee Hyori, written by singer-songwriter MayBee and Kim Do-hyun. It was chosen as the title track from Lee's debut studio album Stylish...E, which was released on August 13, 2003 by DSP Entertainment and Daeyoung AV. The album was Lee's first solo project apart from her group Fin.K.L.

The music video for the song was directed by Seo Hyun Seung.

Reception and accolades[edit]

  • Initially when the song was first released, its American pop style received lukewarm feedback.[1]
  • The lead single "10 Minutes" became one of her signature hits and the singer nearly swept the Daesangs, the most prestigious South Korean music award, winning more than seven of them, including three of the four most prestigious Daesangs. Stylish sold 144,182 copies in South Korea alone, according to the Music Industry Association of Korea in 2003.[2] Her popularity in her various activities eventually was dubbed as the "Hyori Syndrome" in South Korea, and the Korean Media nicknamed 2003 "The Year of Hyori" as she was rarely out of the news all year.[3]
  • The song received massive success and later became Lee's most successful single and one of her signature songs.
  • Helped stated the "Lee Hyori Syndrome" causing her to win a bunch of awards by the end of the year naming it "Lee Hyori's Year".
  • In 2010, music website Monkey3 tracked the streaming and download sales of Lee's catalogue.[4]
  • The song also received the daesang (grand prize) award at the 2003 KBS Music Award on December 30, 2003.
  • Music blog Allkpop chose the song as one of the top ten K-pop tracks from 2003 to 2013.[5]
  • Composer who made the song "10 Minutes", which was a prelude to the premiere of Lee Hyo-ri syndrome.

Impact[edit]

  • However, '10 Minutes 'in 2003' s solo album Stylish was a gigantic song that was not only for men but also for women. How many groups have repeated '10 Minutes' sex codes? [1]
  • In fact, housekeeping women began to become stubborn in the 1990s. The women in Uhm Jung-hwa's 'Trinity Face' and Kim Hyun-jung's 'Dankal' chewed men in strong tone without hitting the betrayed men.

Lee Hyo Ri then lit up the way of directing female singers. Ten Minutes, a song that can entice a man in 10 minutes.

Background[edit]

The then newly-formed Epik High have a small cameo appearance on the music video

The music video for "10 Minutes" was directed by Seo Hyun Seung, who later went on to work with Lee on two of her other videos.[6] DSP Entertainment issued a statement on August 7, 2003 stating that the album was at its final stage of making and Lee was practicing the video's choreography conducting by Marlyn Ortiz, a previous collaborator with Madonna and Britney Spears.[7][8] Ortiz was offered the role while teaching at a dance school in Sinchon County through a company in New York that she was working for.[8] She shared: "When I first met Britney Spears, who was an unknown name before her debut, I saw her dancing and knew she was going to be good. Of course, when I took on Lee Hyori, who benchmarked Spears, I felt similar."[8] Following release of the video, Lee taught a small portion of the choreography on "Star Dance School" statement of MBC's Music Camp on September 26.

  • The video was later released on August 23, 2003.[9]

The man in the video was a "faceless singer" named H.

Scenes from the video were filmed at the hip-hop nightclub NB (now named NB2) in Hongdae, Seoul, which owned by YG Entertainment's founder Yang Hyun-suk.[1]

The video was later included on Lee's first video release Made in Hyolee, released in 2004.

  • Her music video emphasizes sexy, and unfortunately regrettably emanates a seductive choreography. As a male protagonist, 'Hyun Seung-min' appears, attracting attention.[9]
  • In the “10 Minutes” music video, Lee Hyori’s niece is seen wearing a red cap and sitting on one of the cars.[10]

The style from the video helped her emerge as a fashion icon and a sex symbol.(?)[12]

The music video received a Mnet Music Video Festival award for Most Popular Music Video in 2003.[13] Later in 2006, Korean entertainment channel TVN voted it at number 11 on their all-time best music videos list.[14]

Live performances[edit]

In '10 Minutes', Lee Hyo-ri, who was uneasy in the pitch even though he lowered the song to a key, recently went to a music festival. [6]

On August 17, 2003, Lee performed on SBS's music program Inkigayo as her first "comeback stage." The performance included "Prologue (Drum & Bass)", "One Two Three N'Four" and "10 Minutes".

Lee later expressed her dislike of the performance: "My first time onstage, I was not myself. I mean, I was very nervous. I vividly remember I was nervous. On account of the high-heel shoes, it was hard to dance right. The dance was something totally new to me, and being alone onstage was not helping. All and all, so-so. I could have done better is what I'm feeling now. My movements tensed, my face stiff and all. Later on, I checked the video, I felt stupid. (Laughs) For the lack of grace."
