Unblocked
[edit]Hi Doug. Do not know if you were aware but I was blocked indefinitely as a Sockpuppet on 6 August 2021. I was pretty gobsmacked by the accusation and offered a defense against what I really did not understand. Another editor, an admin, also questioned the block. The admin who placed it reviewed that data, said he had made an error, and removed the block on 27 August. I haven't been checking my user page regularly, but did so today - I'm back. But I left in the middle of edits on the Cartiers and don't know where that stands. Please bring me up to date. Cleveland Todd (talk)
- @Cleveland Todd: Glad to see you back. I lost track myself on the Cartiers. Right now I am working on TWO large GANs with many issues. I'll get back to you later with details on Cartiers. Thanks for whatever help you can provide.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 18:41, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Cleveland Todd: Antoine Ephrem Cartier I submitted GAN, and I noticed there is a grammar tag on it now. It would be helpful if you could copy edit the article and remove that tag. If you want, could you copy edit Warren Antoine Cartier and submit GAN. You can get a couple of GA green icons for your user page for helping get these to Good Article status. Thanks for whatever help you can provide.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 19:48, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Cleveland Todd: I put back in those edits that were removed that you did as a copy edit. I thought your edits were fine and am using those. Cite news
[edit]Hello Doug. I am trying to use a newspaper article for a citation in the Sinclair, Hamilton and Company article, which was just created, and am having a little difficulty getting the cite news template to behave. Mackinac College wiki update
[edit]I have been referred to you by jp×g 08:49, 25 April 2021. His referral was posted at the very end of the Talk Page for "Mackinac College". His response was to my inquiry about an Original Research problem regarding the following sentence:
“This article is about the college created by founders of the Moral Re-Armament.”
I am hoping that you might help me settle the removal of this sentence.
Also, the Mackinac College wiki article has a great many problems regarding the verifiability, reliability, validity, and veracity of references. I've set up a table that spells them out, but I don't know how to upload it to you. The table further up in the Mackinac College Talk page is an early (2017) version of this table. I also own all the references I've cited and can scan or email any content you might need to see.
These are sources I have cited in the Talk article. 1. Moral Re-Armament: the reinventions of an American religious movement / Daniel Sack, page ix. [4] Retrieved 2018-06-23 2. - @Karin D. E. Everett: It so happens that I have walked to Mission Point Resort many times from downtown City of Mackinac Island when I visited the island. Yes, its true that I have created a lot of Michigan articles from the 500 articles I have created for Wikipedia. I also have 190 Good Articles. It appears to me that other editors want to replace “This article is about the college created by founders of the Moral Re-Armament.” WITH THE FOLLOWING SENTENCE: “This is the first college created on Mission Point, Mackinac Island, Michigan.” To me that makes sense because the founders of MRI all died BEFORE the college was created. Howard was a journalist, NOT a founder of MRI. To me, with the Wikipedia writing experience I have the RATIONALE under Talk:Mackinac College#Request edit on 25 June 2018 makes sense. If I had to make the call I would say to replace the existing header sentence (the one you pointed out above) with This is the first college created on Mission Point, Mackinac Island, Michigan.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 11:55, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
I am delighted with your reply to my concern about the first sentence on the Mackinac College page. I will happily edit that sentence. I worry that 'John from Idegon' or his immediate followers have perversely reverted or deleted every post I make. I will get back to you if that happens.
Your response

Comments on new Mackinac College Wikipedia page
[edit]Hi Doug! I'm back in town and find that you have been incredibly busy on the Mackinac College page. People at the college reunion were very glad to see the corrected first sentence.
I am only sending you a few comments here, for now. First, in 2014 Jref split the short Mackinac College article into 3 separate stubs: Mission Point buildings, Mackinac College, and the Humbard college. So you have no doubt seen the "Mission Point (Mackinac Island)" Wikipedia article I posted in 2014 and also the Mackinac College (Humbard) article I posted that year. Those articles include information you have now inexplicably duplicated in the Mackinac College article. The new article you've posted also inexplicably contains my obsolete infobox [03:17, 26 February 2014 (added to infobox)] and data from Humbard's infobox. You've given information about MRA, a financial source, and nothing about the 4 years of the College life and activities and what was achieved. Also note that the link to "charter" in the first paragraph of 'Beginnings' is both wrong (taxable dollars?!) and incorrectly referenced to Sack (he mentions a charter and then cites a nonexistent MRA reference).
Years back I found a useful Wikipedia article for writing about a college: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:College_and_university_article_guideline. We followed that guideline when writing the new "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mackinac_College#New_Mackinac_College_article,_with_58_references". I assume that you have seen this article, which is the only reliable source of facts about the College--exhaustively researched and referenced. The Wikipedia guideline permits use of publications by the college itself, among many other sources. We utilized these sources as well as published books. These sources provided the list of our Board of Trustees, books published by students and faculty, the sources of Dr. Cornell's work at the National Academy of Sciences, and much more. I will attach a table of the list of errors in the prior Mackinac College article in a following communication.Karin D. E. Everett (talk) 21:10, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

- @Gwillhickers: I also have Firefox. AND it also does not show up in the toolbar. It's an automatic function. To see an example of how it works, look at the David Hall article history for 22:56 2 October 2021 and you should see at the bottom of the article in References several Harv Errors in bright red letters. Comments on your GA nomination of Albert Kahn (architect)
[edit]I have nominated Redskin for a review, so following the advice I looked at other nominations to review, since I have only done one before. I only edit articles in the arts or social sciences, so Albert Kahn was the only current nomination that interested me. I studied architecture in the dim past, and only heard Kahn's name in passing. The current article reflects a possible reason, he was competent practitioner working mainly in Detroit, but eclipsed by his more creative contemporaries with national or international reputations. However, this impression may be due to editors only using easily accessible sources. I quickly identified two books on Kahn which could be used to make this a good article, but I not by me.--WriterArtistDC (talk) 16:28, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Newspapers as sources
[edit]Hi Doug. In my travels, hunting down good sources, I came upon a journal essay, listed below, which stresses the importance of using newspaper articles as sources. Its author maintains that they are not used often enough by students and historians. The article has some interesting and compelling ideas that I though you would appreciate. Jacona history
[edit]You may have good ownership information for the post conversion period. There is a good chance the hull was owned by the USSB/USMC/MARAD as so many WW I hulls were into WW II. On the other hand I saw indications the hull may have been actually sold private then reacquired in 1945 for MARAD/Army/Navy. My usual shipping sources do not cover that since the "ship" ceased to be and dropped out of registry by 1934. Following ownership of those WW I hulls can be truly difficult as the glut of USSB construction and economic difficulties in shipping made for constant swapping of ships, some allocated by USSB, some bought and sold, and general confusion in hulls, lines (some just operating entities of the USSB) and owning entities (lots of strange holding companies) 1920—1942. This hull has an interesting history so it would be good to pin some things down. I'm going to take a quick look at the possibility in the USSB Annual Reports to see if it was laid it up for a period after the war as so many of those surplus hulls were. Palmeira (talk) 14:48, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
Update: Got it for the conversion. It was sold. Was it resold of just straight into WSA/USMC 1945 is now a question. Palmeira (talk) 15:02, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Good finds
[edit]Hi Doug. As you probably know by now I launched the Bibliography of early American publishers and printers a couple of days ago. Too often I had to mull through the different articles to find that 'one source' I happened to be looking for, and figured if they were all listed under one roof it would make future efforts much easier. Since then I've come across some interesting finds -- ones that don't come up in regular searches, but listed in the bibliographies and notes of other works. Of particular interest is Bibliography of printing in America, Watkins, 1906. It was amazing to find so many works about printing published long ago. Going through the listings in Watkins' work I felt I was on sort of an archeological dig with discoveries to behold. It's listed below, along with a couple of works it had listed I think you'll find particularly interesting.
- Watkins, George Thomas (1906). Bibliography of printing in America; books, pamphlets and some articles in magazines relating to the history of printing in the New World. Boston, The compiler.
- Hammond, Otis Grant (1902). Bibliography of the Newspapers and Periodicals of Concord, N.H., 1790-1898. Ira C. Evans Co.
- Streeter, Gilbert Lewis (1856). An Account of the Newspapers and Other Periodicals Published in Salem from 1768 to 1856. W. Ives and G.W. Pease, printers.

- @Gwillhickers: Thanks! They look most interesting. I'm sure I'll be using those in the future.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 17:52, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
A couple of 'Must Haves'
[edit]Below are two works I think you'll more than appreciate. They offer extensive coverage on figures like, William Parks, William Bradford, David Hall, John Holt, William Goddard, Peter Zenger, James Parker and many others. Needless to say, coverage of Benjamin Franklin and his associations with other printers and publishers occurs throughout both these works. Colonial newspapers, along with information on paper mills, typography, etc. is also covered throughout both works. These sources run par, to say the least, with Isiah Thomas and Lawrence Wroth and imo are a 'must have' in any library of PDF works on printers and publishers. After one look at their table of contents and their extensive indexes I believe you'll be sold.

First of all, a belated Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Year - good to see you back. Hope you're recovering well. Yes, anything that I can send you I'd be more than happy to share -- just name it. This past month I've been discovering one good source after another about printers and such, the not so easy way -- stuff that doesn't come up in google searches. Take a look at Bibliography of Early American publishers and printers for the latest entries -- they're all noted by name in its edit history. I've also made some sizable additions in the Early American publishers and printers article and have added two sections: 6. Printing presses and type; and 7.1 "Laid paper" and "wove paper". The wove paper was considerably smoother than the traditional laid paper. Benjamin Franklin brought some of the new "wove paper" back from Europe and Isaiah Thomas (publisher) was the first American printer to put it to regular use. Okay, guess I'm getting carried away here. Anything I can send you, just ask. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 19:46, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Copy/paste moves
[edit]Hi Doug. I saw that you recently tried to revert the moves of World's longest domestic flight and Talk:World's longest domestic flight by just copy/pasting the text back in, but in case you didn't know, this is generally not allowed becuase a copy/paste splits the page history which is required for attribution. Administrator Anthony Appleyard has had to do a history merge on both of these pages to fix it. In the future, if there is a move that you can't make, please post to WP:RM/TR and wait for an admin to do it properly (someone else had posted it there already by the time you re-moved it.) eviolite (talk) 16:53, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

New Commons category
[edit]Hi Doug. I've been uploading images of newspapers and realized a category for colonial newspapers was needed, so I created one. The Category of Newspapers of the United States is too generic, with hundreds of newspapers from all eras lumped together. When you get the opportunity, could you add any appropriate newspaper images to the new category? Thanx.
Newspapers of colonial America -- Gwillhickers (talk) 18:18, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Gwillhickers: That new category looks good and was needed. Yes, when I get some time I will add appropriate newspaper images to the new category you made. Right now I have two Good Articles in the works of pending reviews I've been notified on that are coming up with sets of issues. That I think will keep me busy for a few days.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:06, 20 November 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Another needed category
[edit]Just so you know, the category for Colonial American printers was just created. The categories for American publishers (people) and American printers, again, were too generic with individuals from all eras lumped in together. Still in the process of adding names. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 21:18, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

A somewhat premature New Year's greeting
[edit]John Vanderlyn, Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos (c.1812), Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts |
Best wishes for a safe, healthy and prosperous 2022. | |
Thank you for your contributions toward making Wikipedia a better and more accurate place. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 20:17, 26 December 2021 (UTC) Moral lesson: John Vanderlyn was an American painter who studied in Paris, and his life-sized Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos was one of the first large nudes exhibited in the United States. Peddling the poison as well as the cure, this overtly sensuous work was presented to the public as a moral lesson on the consequences of lascivious behavior. Visible in the distance is the ship of Princess Ariadne's secret lover, Theseus, for whom she has betrayed her people by helping him to escape the Labyrinth and slay the Minotaur. Ariadne's bliss will come to an end when she awakens from her post-coital reverie, only to discover that the faithless Theseus has sailed away without her. |
