Deletion

User:Gogo Dodo deleted an article I created ostensibly under notability guidelines with no debate or any chance for me to respond to his allegation. Notability guidelines as I understand them are loose enough that in the case of the article that was deleted, the bare minimum of politeness would have necessitated some period of debate or discussion as to determine notability. His "contribution" was certainly not constructive and yet no one is affixing warnings to his talk page. This is a great way to drive new editors away and to restrict Wikipedia into the oligarchical domain of a nerd elite. Mbroderick271 (talk) 02:22, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

The article meets notability guidelines, which I will explain to him shortly. If there's no open period for discussion, then the judgment of notability is by fiat rather than an open process. Suggestion

I have seen the back-and-forth on this page. I don't have time right now to look at this situation in detail, but I would like to make a couple of quick observations. First, Iamawesome800 is right that in general, there is no rule against a user's removing notes or warnings from his or her own talkpage. Second, from seeing the last couple of edit summaries, I sense a blow-up about to happen here. Can I strongly suggest everyone dropping this for tonight. Casey Bramlet

What's with the edits on the Casey Bramlet page? Casey did not play for Hamburg in 2006. He played for them in 2005 and 2007. So, it looks inaccurate to put Hamburg Sea Devils (2005–2007), rather than Hamburg Sea Devils (2005, 2007). Also, he was a full squad member in 2004 for Cincinnati. So, I didn't want to put the asterisk outside the whole box as he was just an offseason member in 2005. NFLE stints aren't listed if they were affiliated with an NFL team at the time, which Bramlet was. So they should not be present.

As for the Bengals, when a guy was on the active roster we do not put an asterisk there at all. We simply list him as being with them in 2004. Project news The offseason is here, but that doesn't mean there isn't work to be done. National Signing Day has concluded, and a raft of new players are preparing for the season. Two college football-related featured article candidates have been proposed: 2008 ACC Championship Game and 2008 Humanitarian Bowl need your comments, questions, and criticism to become featured articles. A backlog of college football good article nominees is developing. Six college football articles: Darren McFadden, 1998 Gator Bowl, Mark Sanchez, 1954 Orange Bowl, Thom Darden, and Keith Bostic (American football) need to be reviewed for Good Article quality. A lengthy discussion about the use of team logos in different articles is under way, and your help and comments are requested. Because the argument has gotten heated at times, editors are reminded to stay civil and respect other viewpoints, even if you may disagree with them. An excellent overview about Wikipedia's rules for non-free images can be found here. It's never too early to start thinking about spring football! Be sure to carry a camera and get pictures of players, teams, stadiums, and all the action and pageantry of college football. An excellent guide to taking pictures for WP:CFB can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Images. Even if you don't think a photo can be immediately used for an article, try uploading it to Wikimedia Commons so future article authors can use it. I will absolutely not permit the moves to the dab (Canadian football), it is against the dab conventions to describe the person rather than the sport between the brackets and is harmfully over-precise about the code of football when such precision is unnecessary when there is no other football player with the same name and misleading when the player has played multiple codes or is not of the same nationality as the code of football. WP:NCSP summarizes the situation well. There is no good reason to use (Canadian football) in any of the cases you used. DoubleBlue (talk) 15:45, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

The dab is not a précis of the article; the lead describes what the article is about. The dab is a method to have two articles with the same name. Using the (Canadian football) dab is wrong for all the reasons I mentioned above. Where will a reader come across this article and believe it is a soccer player? There are no soccer players with these names in Wikipedia. The disambiguation page lists them as professional Canadian football players. The articles should and do describe what they are notable for. The dab (football player) is correct; the dab (Canadian football) is too precise and incorrect for players who play multiple codes and those who are not of the same nationality. If a gridiron player shares the name with a soccer player, then we can deal with it via (footballer) for the soccer player and using the WP:NCSP#Extreme disambiguation rules. Tate/Zeigler Moves And Other Related Material

I am curious where you found that Drew Tate and Toby Zeigler were released. If you are basing it off the Riders roster on Riderville.com, I wouldn't use that as the basis for anything. The Riders are notorious for not updating it or removing players who have been moved to other lists. I am not doubting your info, just curious as it has not been reported on any Riders related site I can find.

Also, since the free agent market has just opened, is it not better to hide the text of the free agents, instead of deleting the player and readding him when he re-signs? Unlike the NFL, CFL free agency is a longer process where players generally do not sign immediately. Its not uncommon for a player to re-sign with his team a day or two before training camp, even if he had no intention of going elsewhere.Shootmaster 44 (talk) 02:19, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Not really sure how this works, but I'll give it a try. I think my blurb on Mr. Selig was sufficiently neutral, at least not to warrant speedy deletion. Featured articles like Tyrone Wheatley, Jacques Plante, and Wayne Gretzky all begin with the "is a professional ... player" construction and WP:LEAD#First sentence suggests for the very first sentence to say who it is and why he's notable; i.e. professional (WP:ATHLETE) football player. I understand. It's a fairly new observation to me as well. I still learn a little more all the time about the manual of style and what makes a good article. I think the Givenname Surname (born Month day, year) is a professional Canadian football player who ... is a nice standard construction though. I also recently noted that WP:MOSNUM suggests that the place of birth not be placed with the date of birth in the first sentence but, rather, placed within context in the body of the article. Of course, with the briefest stubs that's not really possible but once there is some content, I think it should be done. DoubleBlue (talk) 15:08, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

I don't recall which article now but I first learned of that style recommendation in a featured article candidate review where it was brought up as an issue that needed correction. We should always be working toward the best style. I agree in a short stub that it could be placed in the first sentence but if there is enough content to have an "early years" section, then it should be moved there. Sorry man, but that just doesn't make sense. If you want them in the CFL free agent category, add the category to the list at the bottom. Giles is also an NFL free agent, and was more recently employed by an NFL team. So why do we give the CFL cat but have the NFL one removed? Infoboxes aren't to add categories. In fact, I don't even believe free agent categories should exist. Think about all the other categories on Mike Byrne's page for example. His birth year. His birth place. His football positions. Obviously, I am inclined to agree that categories should be entered directly rather than through a template but in this case, as a temporary category, it is a quite convenient way to add and remove via the parameter switch and there are, of course, other templates like {{current}} that automatically add temporary categories. Hey. Do you really intend to keep both roster templates up to date? It seems like a waste of resources to me. Why not just link to the roster?

Like I said before, the deal doesn't happen at midnight. The deal happens when it happens, which is any time after midnight. Could be right away, could be any time Friday, could be after that.
