Egypt's main sport is football. People in Egypt[1][2][3] gather around to watch the various egyptian clubs and the Egyptian national football team play. The most commonly known egyptian clubs are Al- Ahly and Zamalek of Cairo. For the Egyptian Premier League the main competition is split between these two teams making majority of Egyptians rooting for either team , making them Ahlaweyeen or Zamalkaweyeen in arabic, leaving the minority rooting for the rest of the teams in the league. These two teams create the greatest football rivalry in Africa.

Premier League[edit]

The Egyptian Premier League (Arabic: الدوري المصري الممتاز) (League A) since 2006/2007 has sixteen clubs. Some prominent Premier League clubs, other than Al-Ahly and Zamalek SC are Ismaily SC (Ismailia), Al-Masry (Port Sa'id), Itihad (Alexandria) and al-Mokawloon al-Arab (Cairo).[4][5][6] While Enppi & Haras El-Hadoud are clubs on the rise. The Egyptian league is considered to be one of the most competitive leagues in Africa and around the world.

There is no official English translation or title for the Egyptian League, in any case the league is named the Etisalat Premier League due to sponsorship by Etisalat. Until 2006/2007 season however, the name was Vodafone Premier League since vodafone was the sponsor of the league.

National football team's achievements[edit]

The Egypt national football team (Arabic: منتخب مصر لكرة القدم), also known under the nickname The Pharaohs, is, as their name states, the national team of Egypt and is administered by the Egyptian Football Association. The team was founded in 1921.[7] The team has won multiple cups over the years. They won the African Cup of Nations 7 times. They won in 1957, 1959,1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, and 2010[7] making them record holders of most African cup wins (for winning 7 times) and most wins in a row (for winning 3 times in a row). This makes them one of the best teams in Africa. Their highest FIFA ranking was in July 2010 when they ranked 9th in the world, making it their greatest achievement.[7] They were the first from an African country to participate in the World Cup when they played in 1934, losing to Hungary 4-2. Although they lost, they are still considered one of the strongest teams in Africa.

Egypt won the inaugural African Nations Cup in 1957, and also won the tournament in 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010.[8]

Current squad[edit]

A typical soccer team has a start-up team of 11 players including the goalie. A team is allowed three substitutions within a ninety minute game therefore most football teams have a minimum of fourteen players. Below is the roster of the 2013 Team of Egypt.
