Miss Universe Succession Boxes[edit]

Hi Carly! Joey here. My apology for replying to you just NOW. I just started this account in wikipedia last year, but just found out about talk pages now... as in NOW. Regarding the succession boxes, the ones which used to be 1997-98 instead of just 1997, well, I just followed a previous format made to some of the winners pages, although i myself thought that it seemed awkward when the winner's official title is associated with just a single year. as for the categorization, yes, you're right about that. i think that i might have just become too obsessive-compulsive in pursuing a more complete and comprehensive categorization to the point that some categories have become redundant or even non-sense. anyway, i hope that this will make editing such pages easier since i just learned how to use talk pages. :) Joey80 06:31, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#User_talk:Joey80. Arniep 12:17, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure about the order of the succession box. Because while I was editing the actors' pages, another editor said that it should come before the external links... It is usually in sports pages that the succession box is placed last, along with templates. So we should at least find a consensus when it comes to beauty contestants... In any case, most of them went on to pursue film careers, so does that mean we should follow the actor's page convention?Joey80 09:49, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Candace Brown, Miss Alabama USA[edit]

Hi. I was wandering you had any information and sources you could add to this article (currently under deletion discussion). I thought I'ld ask you, since you seem to be the resident expert on such things. --Rob 21:20, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the additions to Candace Michelle Brown. A true keeper now! I'm going to point it out again at the Afd. FloNight talk 03:36, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh I didn't do much.... in fact I basically did nothing. Someone else managed to find some articles which appear to have saved it. Thank them! PageantUpdater 03:39, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alice Panikian[edit]

Hello PageantUpdater,

Please don't change the the ancestry info of Alice Panikian. It reflects the truth and I can prove it. I've read the malicious, untrue and offensive revision of a user with IP address 130.86.114.99 and I asked the administrator to ban him.

Sincerely,

Pageant Templates[edit]

Hi! I'm just wondering if we can add templates tying the pages of Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Earth and Miss International together as the "Big Four Pageants"... I tried making one but I'm not familiar with templates and formating such. Also, a template tying together Miss Teen USA, Miss USA and Miss Universe can be done since these three are under one administration. What do you say?Joey80 03:09, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I kinda get where you're coming from, but I'm not exactly sure how you think they displayed and how they should work (i.e. which pages they would be put on, what they would link to etc). If you perhaps give me a bit more info (specifics) I'll take a look at it :) PageantUpdater 03:15, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

template request from WP:HD[edit]

Hi - I saw your request at the help desk. I created User:PageantUpdater/Miss Universe Organization titleholders for you which works like this:

Miss Universe Organization
Titleholders 2005
Miss Universe
Natalie Glebova
Miss USA
Chelsea Cooley
Miss Teen USA
Allie LaForce

You can copy this into template:Miss Universe Organization titleholders if you'd like. -- Rick Block (talk) 13:53, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Susie Castillo[edit]

Who do you think you are reverting the templates? Hey, I'm just kidding (smile). I'm O.K. with it, after all they must be in uniform with the others. I think they look great and I believe that it is great that you have taken up such a task. Tony the Marine 05:37, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lol thanks... I wouldn't have thought of them had User:Joey80 not suggested something similar but I thought it was a good idea to tie the delegates together :) PageantUpdater 05:40, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MUO Template[edit]

Looks good! Umm... is there anyway to make the text size of the template smaller? At least, of equal size with that of the succession box?Joey80 07:48, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You know, I hadn't even notice that :P Unfortunately I have not the faintest idea how to fix it :P PageantUpdater 07:58, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I think I can do it. I managed to do the Big Four Pageants template just now (see the bottom of the Miss Universe page). I'll find a way to make the text the same size as the succession box.Joey80 08:08, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done it! I managed to minimize the text size. Anyway, since I am already somewhat familiar with templates, then I'll be making a template tying all the Big Four pageant winners in the same year. Hope you can help me in adding this template in the winners' pages. By the way, are you still planning to add the template to the winners before Miss Teen USA began?Joey80 08:55, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats :) I know the rest of the MUO templates need adding (including some in years where there is no article for the teen... I got kinda sidetracked :P I'm thinking of creating a separate template (with only two columns at the bottom) for the years pre-1983. I guess we can held each other with this! Just curious, and you don't have to answer if you don't worry, but what is your interest in pageants? is there a favourite pageant or system you follow? As for me, as you can probably tell, my main interest lies with Miss USA and Miss Teen USA :) PageantUpdater 09:05, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for posting your opinion in the templates deletion page. As for your question, well I live in the Philippines, so there is a lot of hype when it comes to pageants, especially Miss Universe, like when it was held here in 1994. Well, the hype has toned down in the last few years, even though we won last year's Miss International. As far as publicly expressing it, I don't here anyone speaking about beauty pageants. But I think many are closet pageant fanatics--as shown by the fact that Philippine delegates have been reaching the semi-finals of Miss World when text messaging was made the bases of such, and when we won the Miss Photogenic title of Miss Universe last year (when it is based on Internet votes). =) Joey80 06:13, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All the beautiful alums[edit]

Hi. As you've added a number of notable alumni to various high school articles, I'm sure you often find the school in question has no article to add them to. This is why I made Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/alumni. It's a kind of "holding pen", to gather up alumni info, until an article is made to place it. Also, some editors opt to make school articles for schools with more notable alumni. I thought I'd mention it, and it's obviously no biggie if you opt not to use it. --Rob 23:09, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip Rob :) It sounds like a good idea - I'll add them all when I get time. I'm currently working on a project for my own site with all the state pageant results since 2000, so that's keeping me busy for now :P PageantUpdater 23:10, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Public domain images like Image:AmberCopley.jpg[edit]

Hi. Thanks for uploading the public domain image. I just wanted to make a couple suggestions (entirely optional). Sorry, if I'm telling you stuff you already heard :

  1. You seemed to use this image from this page. However, there is also a high resolution image available, which is much better to use. Because the image is public domain, we're allowed to use the highest possible resolution available.
  2. Consider uploading public domain images to Commons. If you do, the images can be used easily in English Wikipedia, as well as all the other Wikipedia languages. Also, you can upload more images then will "fit" in an article. For instance, you can upload both the full (uncropped) image, and then any cropped version. You can create a gallery of images for each contestant (or groups of related contestants) if you wish (such galleries are generally not allowed in Wikipedia articles). You can then link to the gallery from Wikipedia. One great thing about Commons is it's much harder (though not impossible) for legal images to get deleted. Typically, I upload every decent image of beauty contestants I can find, and then decide after, what (if any) Wikipedia article I'll use them in.

--Rob 06:48, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestions! The image is actually taken from the hi-res (I thought they had the same url, oops)... I haven't used the Commons before but I'll have a go at uploading them there. If you have time, would you mind checking out the pictures Image:CrystalHayes.jpg and Image:CatherineLaurion.jpg to check I've done it correctly? Thanks again :) (and p.s. isn't it great to finally get some "free" pictures :P) PageantUpdater 06:53, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, I'm not sure why, but it seems all three images are lower resolution then the source image was (maybe you're unintentionally scaling the images?). So a re-upload would be a good idea in all three cases. When you upload to Commons, it's probably best to first upload the original image with no alteration/editing, then upload the cropped versions (I suggest re-cropping from the original). That way you'll be assured no quality has been lost. --Rob 07:05, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Lol I wasn't unintentionally cropping the original, I was intentionally cropping it! Will upload the original uncropped to the Commons and go from there... PageantUpdater 07:22, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, I was wandering about scaling specifically. Maybe you scaled (e.g. shrunk) the image? The image in the article should be cropped, but should not be scaled. When uploading to commons, you'll want to upload both uncropped and cropped versions (but never scaled). --Rob 07:27, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oops for "crop" above read "scaled". Didn't realise that was a no-no. Am negotiating the commons now. PageantUpdater 07:28, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I've uploaded Image:ACopley.jpg and put it on Amber Copley and Miss Virginia USA. Have I done this correctly? If so I'll update the other two. PageantUpdater 07:41, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks perfect. --Rob 07:42, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
One question, which tag should I use for Image:CrystalHayes.jpg and Image:CatherineLaurion.jpg? (I'll upload the hi-res versions) PageantUpdater 07:45, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wait. Oh no. I just realized a problem. That's the *state* senate. Those aren't federal government pics. They're no public domain. I'm sorry. I didn't notice that at first. You can't use them on Commons, and maybe not at all. --Rob 07:49, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Did you notice the disclaimer on the index page?: "Photos on the Senate PhotoWire are intended for media use and may be freely reproduced." Obviously this is not a media use but "can be freely reproduced" seems pretty clear! PageantUpdater 07:52, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yah, I did. So, you should definately get a second opinion. I know the U.S. government tag is wrong. There may be another appropriate tag. I never cease to be amazed at what images Wikipedia won't use. It seems 90% of the time permission is given to use an image, we're told "it's not good enough". Sorry, I'm not super helpful here. --Rob 07:57, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I asked a similiar question a while ago here. It was also for the same Michigan State Senate. I was told such images don't count as "free enough". --Rob 08:00, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest asking the question at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --Rob 08:02, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Miss Rhode Island USA 2005 Allison Paganetti[edit]

I would say go ahead and use it. Include all the information you have. Mention what info you have. Also, in a way its good that this image was not on the page (as currently written). Notice where it says "Courtesy photos". That's an indication the pagent dress photo was lent to the army and is not public domain (probably from the pageant). But the image you asked about is this one in uniform which looks very much like it's a true army photo. Also, I beleive I actually recall finding essentially the same story, with both pics on the page (or very similiar ones). I recall seeing the "pageant dress" pic was marked "Courtesy", but the "fatigues" one attributed to a fellow soldier. Basically in this particular case, faitgues=good, dress=bad. --Rob 15:18, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi -- thanks for fixing my template. It has worked for the bottom columns, but now the heading is out of line, which, if they're all centered shouldn't be happening. Any ideas? PageantUpdater 22:52, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see the heading as centred across the three columns. Do you see something different? --Cherry blossom tree 22:56, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately not. See this screenshot. PageantUpdater 23:01, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, it seems to work in Internet Explorer when I remove the style="width:500px". Does this break the template in some other way or is it OK? --Cherry blossom tree 23:14, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great, thank you :) PageantUpdater 23:16, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza![edit]

Welcome, PageantUpdater, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in April, we will keep you updated about the results. Because you are a new member, you are not able to vote in these elections, but you will be more than welcome to take part in the elections in June.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC Tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Suggestions[edit]

Hi PageantUpdater. As regards to the secondary question on the editor review, you create a lot of substantial articles, so if there is an interesting or unusual fact attached to them, then Template talk:Did you know is a place where you can nominate it to be included on the Template:Did you know on the main page. I'm rather surprised that in three weeks off submitting stuff and getting 5 DYKs that some people are saying that they know of me from DYK, for instance. Some people will want about 10% wikipedia edits and perhaps 5% talk page edits to show communication and familiar usage of policy. A lot people will just go to about 20 AfDs per day and "vote" without really engaging in debate, and that is probably good enough to "game" the system so to speak. It only takes about 30s to "vote" on an AfD, although longer, if one is actually discussing. Regards, ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! - review me 04:49, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops. I forgot to remind you that the article has to be less than five days old in order to be eligible for consideration. :( ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! - review me 05:23, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Templates[edit]

Hi Cherry blossom tree!

A few days ago you helped me with Template:RPM Productions states, and I was wondering if you'd be able to lend a hand again. I've tried to re-make this and others to the style of the Miss USA state template and it worked fine for Template:Vanbros states but I'm having trouble with Template:Premier Pageants states and Template:RPM Productions states. What I would like is for the heading to be centered and for there to be better spacing in the bottom section.

Any chance you'd be able to help me? -- PageantUpdater 03:46, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I've taken out the padding sections, which seems to have centred the heading. Does that look OK? Can you be more specific about what you want doing with the spacing in the bottom section? --Cherry blossom tree 23:03, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! What I was wanting was for the spacing between the text links in the bottom section (e.g. "Miss Alabama Teen USA", "Miss Arkansas Teen USA", "Miss Mississippi Teen USA") to be spread out more so there is a clear gap between the columns. Is this possible? -- PageantUpdater 23:15, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
I've had a mess with Template:Premier Pageants states and Template:RPM Productions states. I added an extra column between each column that was already there. It's a bit messy but it looks OK to me. You? Is Template:Vanbros states alright already? I probably won't be able to look at this until tomorrow, so if I've messed anything up just revert. --Cherry blossom tree 23:39, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons duplicate[edit]

Just to let you know, I just noticed you uploaded Commons:Image:DierdreDowns.jpg (back on May 11). I already updloaded the same file as Commons:Image:Deidre Downs and Chet Edwards.JPG (April 22). So I tagged the extra one for deletion. You added the image in Commons:Miss America, so I changed it to refer to the original upload.

To avoid uploading a duplicate file, you can check Commons:Category:People by alphabet or Commons:Category:Beauty pageant contestants to see if the person has a page already, and then see if the pic is on their page. It's also useful to see if there's a person under a slightly different spelling of the name. When I add a picture of a new person, I always try to add a page for them, and put them in those categories, which avoids duplication. --Rob 06:31, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and a question[edit]

Hello and thanks for the welcome message! Also, a quick question. I'm doing a little housecleaning and am too new to know your/the community's preferences. If I see a name to clarify, I don't know if it is best to create a redirect or to use a piped link. Example: for Eurlyne/Arlene Howell, I think I actually did both. Now I have noticed that Erica Marie Commeau (Miss Maine USA 2005) has a page without her middle name, but don't know if it is better to pipe or create a redirect. I would appreciate some direction. Thanks!!!

Look at the References now! BTW Where do you live, your user page says nothing. --HamedogTalk|@ 04:18, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Commissiong.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Commissiong.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 19:34, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On the WikiProject[edit]

Even though there's been a lack of people expressing interest in this, I think it would still be a good idea for you to go ahead and start it. Once made, a standard messagebox can be put on related talk pages (all pageants and contestants), which is what will cause people to find it. It would be a good source for standards, and let people know where to look for info (e.g. various publications, web sites, etc...), and advise (e.g. image copyrights, and such). It would be helpful for new article editors, to encourage them to make fuller articles (e.g. remind them of things to include). --Rob 18:18, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Wikiprojectbeautypageants.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Wikiprojectbeautypageants.JPG. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 02:10, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Well, WP:SIG is the typical guideline for this thing, but your color changes and font changes make the editing page huge (4 lines on my 1024x768) and it was very hard to get to your talk page. It's not visibly ugly on the page, but it's more the editing box that'll cheese people off. --badlydrawnjeff talk 23:18, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flags at Miss Universe winners list page[edit]

Hello! If we're going for the accuracy of the flags used during the time the Miss Universe won, some changed might be made on the flags displayed on this article. For example, the US flag before 1959 does not contain 50 stars, Venezuela just changed its flag design this year, Puerto Rico made a change on the hue/shade(?) of blue it uses on its flag in 2001, etc. For more info on the appropriate flag, you can check out the ones I used in the Big Four pageants article. A short Esperanzial update[edit]

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
