Did you know nominations/Félag hljómplötuframleiðenda

[edit]

Hello! I was the first reviewer at Template:Did you know nominations/Félag hljómplötuframleiðenda, where you added the second review. I'm trying to learn more about the DYK process, so I was wondering if you would be willing to talk me through your process there? I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything and I evidently didn't catch all the source concerns. I'd appreciate any feedback you have for me! Happy editing, Perfect4th (talk) 01:59, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Perfect4th! Don't worry about missing the reliability concerns – it's something that only comes with time and practice. Generally, when I'm reviewing I try to keep the DYK Guidelines in mind. The big ones, you already know: new enough, long enough, with no close paraphrasing or copyright issues, and adequate sourcing (as well as QPQ). There are things that one might catch and bring up, like the reliability of the sources; in this case, the lack of formatting was concerning to me, because without full reference information I wasn't able to ascertain how reliable the source was from a glance, and searching for the source on Wikipedia didn't return hits that confirmed its reliability. If you miss something, don't be disheartened; we all miss things, which is why there are at least four sets of eyes on every nomination even before it hits the main page: the nominator, the reviewer, the promoter, and the user who moves the nomination to a queue. This multi-layered approach helps quite a bit.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:07, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense, thank you very much! Perfect4th (talk) 20:38, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Charlotte Motor Speedway

[edit]

On 16 October 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Charlotte Motor Speedway, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that drivers "dodge[d] track blemishes" more than each other during the first race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Charlotte Motor Speedway. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Charlotte Motor Speedway), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Access Malay archives

[edit]

I want to create article like Iskandar (film) for Tragedi Oktober, Getaran, etc. How to access old Malay newspapers? I don't have highbeam.com access. DareshMohan (talk) 16:43, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi DareshMohan. I'm not familiar with Malaysian newspaper archives, as aside from Iskandar and maybe one or two other articles all of my SE Asian writings were about Indonesia. I believe that Newspapers.com has some copies of the Straits Times, and you should have access to Newspapers.com via your Wikipedia Account/Wikipedia Library. ProQuest seems to have some articles too.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 16:52, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Okay, looking through the available material, Newspapers.com does not have anything; however, ProQuest has several reviews and news coverage of both the film and the 250k-copy selling album (which, I know in Indonesia, would have been a platinum certified album... not sure how it works in Malaysia). — Chris Woodrich (talk) 17:14, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uh...

[edit]

I was trying to link the full-resolution image as a link for the Andromeda Galaxy FPC and I may have accidentally transcluded the image instead, I now know that my browser cannot load a page with a 20,000-pixel image on it so if there's any way that can be fixed, thanks. Whoops, that was probably the dumbest thing I've done all week. SirMemeGod18:29, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing this diff, I immediately crossed my fingers opening the edit history hoping it wasn't me—whoops, of course it was! Sorry about that! And thanks for the work on this very cool bio I got to learn about some. Remsense ‥  10:38, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • LOL, no worries, Remsense. Things go walking all the time. I've enjoyed working on the Lingnan School articles. There were some fantastic artists there (Huang Shaoqiang is more my style, personally), and the subject as a whole has gotten me reading into the context of 1900s China ... which ironically helps me understand the context of the Indonesian topics that I've researched both on Wikipedia and in my professional life.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 10:42, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contribution to Wikipedia.

Would you Please help neutrality RFC to be reopened?

Summary: Can an RfC for improving neutrality in a major US presidential election article be reopened after it was hastily closed by a specific user?

1. There were many opinions that the biased article in the US presidential election article should be improved.

2. An RFC for improving neutrality was started, and when opinions for improving neutrality came in, it was hastily closed less than two days after the RFC was created.

3. I would appreciate it if you could help improve Wikipedia articles by reopening the relevant RfC so that the opinions of users who want to address neutrality can be posted.

Hi Chris, I don't quite understand your rationale on this FPC. Can you please explain like I'm five? Thanks, ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 01:45, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi ~~ AirshipJungleman29. Basically, I noticed that the source provided on the file page was not the one that contained the file as it currently existed; as FP is supposed to represent the best that Wikipedia has to offer, a dead source link was not going to be sufficient. As I investigated the file's provenance, I found that it was part of a major investigation into a user who had systematically overwritten artworks with doctored scans (colour adjusted, mostly, but some edited further). This made the lack of clear sourcing even worse; we had no guarantee of the accuracy of the colours. Muhammad agreed with me, and I think our discussion scared away most of the FPC regulars.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:31, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Romanization of Gao Qifeng

[edit]

Hello @Crisco 1492–thank you so much for creating Gao Qifeng and bringing it to DYK. I am wondering if you would like to include some alternative romanizations of his name, Ko Kei-Fung (in Cantonese) and Kao Ch'i-Feng (in Mandarin)? The subject lived before the PRC and his contemporaries would not refer to him using the Pinyin system.

The romanization "Ko Kei-Fung" can be seen here on a 1940 magazine cover. "Kao Ch'i-Feng" can be seen here on An Index to Reproductions of Paintings by Twentieth-Century Chinese Artists (1998), listed under "Kao Weng", his birth name. Re: Ye Gongchuo

[edit]

Wow, incredible job with this article. I think I'm slightly jealous of your skills. Anyway, is there a reason you only make passing mention of his collaboration with Tagore? Is it hard to find more info? I only ask as that would make a great hook if we knew some other details. Viriditas (talk) 21:38, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, do you do halftone restoration at all? Your lead slot image for Ye Gongchuo could be greatly improved using a separate image that uses a blur and sharpen filter. Apparently, the problem arose during the initial scan, where you can limit the dots from the halftone. Viriditas (talk) 22:14, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
