Jakefortinsky comment moved from /header sub-page

Hi David,

I responded to your concerns, maybe I didn't do it correctly, as I contested the deletion request.

I explained in those responses, stating that this article has been created strictly for informative purposes. It has been created with other shows as examples. For example, The Joe Rogan Experience, has been created for informative purposes just like this page has. They both focus on the history of the show and the creation of the show. There is absolutely no marketing basis for this, and it has been written with objective, unbiased, and specifically informative terms. There is no fee or paid opportunity with this, and this was made for information, to allow the general public to have a better understanding and knowledge on the show's premise and history. The goal is to add more history-related content for this show, which will include previous episodes aired, and information regarding each of those episodes. Again, I respect you taking the time to flag this, but as stated, this is not for a marketing purpose, and this cannot lead to any profits of any sort. This is meant to provide information to the public, just as all wikipedia published pages do. I even have gone as far as removing the Buffalo Bills team name from the title, and have specified within the article that this show is not affiliated with the team. Again, this show is for informative reasons, and the article is as well, and is clearly stated as a separate entity from the Buffalo Bills organization. jakef (talk) 16:20, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

@Jakefortinsky: I didn't see this until a few minutes ago because it was added to User talk:Davidwr/header instead of this page by mistake (it's an easy mistake to make, I've updated that page to prevent such mistakes in the future). By the time I saw it and moved it here, the page had been moved to Draft:Herd and 10 Podcast (A Buffalo Bills Podcast). If you want this addressed and haven't raised the issue on the talk page of the draft, please please post a general question there to all editors, not just to me. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 17:30, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

Hey David,

You mentioned that it may be beneficial to have the page for the show Herrd and 10 created by someone else. Are you able to build it for me? I could of course provide the necessary information, and allow you to rewrite it if need be. I really attempted to write the article in an unbiased and objective way. Are you able to help me out here? jakef (talk) 16:42, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

@Jakefortinsky: I'm not the best person to help you. But you can probably get help from the people at the Podcasting WikiProject.
Put 3-5, reliable, independent sources that have each provided significant coverage of the topic on the talk page, then ask for help on the talk page of WP:WikiProject Podcasting. Please note that interviews with the company's principals or others that are "promoting" the topic are generally NOT considered reliable sources unless the interviews are "news-type" interviews, such as the "hard-hitting" ones you might see on 60 Minutes. "Routine" coverage, even if significant and even if from reliable source, also doesn't count. Basically, if any similar organization would get a particular type of coverage "by virtue of existing" that carries zero weight when it comes to assessing if a subject is "notable" or not.
Once the notability hurdle is cleared, then "non-independent" sources such as the official web site and other "official" publications, "non-hard-news" interviews, and the like can be used, but they still have to be "reliable" sources.
As I said earlier on your talk page, it is very likely that even if the topic is notable, Wikipedia and its readers may be better served by a one-sentence or short-paragraph mention in a larger article about the Buffalo Bills or how the team is covered in the media. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:50, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

Latest draft of Wibbitz Wikipedia page (cont. from 29 September 2020)

[continued from User_talk:Davidwr/Archives/Archive_43#Latest_draft_of_Wibbitz_Wikipedia_page dated 29 September 2020]

@Davidwr: I went ahead and edited the draft's talk page with notable references as you requested back in September - not sure if you were alerted when I pinged you (clearly still getting the hang of this editing process). Also important to note: 2 of the pages I mentioned, Animoto and Videology, are both Wibbitz competitors. Animoto is a direct competitor, and Videology is far less well-known in the industry than were are. So I would argue that, if both those companies' articles were deemed notable enough to be published on Wikipedia, and the Wibbitz article follows the same format and voice as those two articles, then Wibbitz also deserves to be published on Wikipedia - if anything, to further expand on the Photo slideshow software industry, so that consumers can make an educated decision when researching this (increasingly popular) type of software. Let me know if you're able to give the page the green light, thanks! ~~~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Surphughes (talkcontribs) 15:28, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
@Surphughes: first, read WP:Signature for instructions on signing your post. Just type four tilde characters like what you see in green, but without the "green"-ness: ~~~~. It will render as something like this: davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:29, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
except with your signature instead of mine.
Also, your edit "clobbered" my talk page, removing large swaths of existing content. I had to restore it THEN restore your question before I could answer it.
As for your question, as I said in September (link to archived discussion is at top of this section), you might want to post a note on Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Companies saying basically what you said to me: You are a paid editor, your competitors have pages, your draft has been rejected, you've talked to the reviewer, he asked you to ask the people at WikiProject companies to review it. It is just as likely that they will improve the other articles or, if the companies are not sufficiently notable, nominate them for deletion, as they are to say "your article is good." They may also tell you in more detail than I can why those companies are notable and yours is not, if that is the case. I will post a follow-up to this message with the "link" back to this version of my talk page. You can include that in your note on Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Companies.
Finally, remember, Wikipedia is NOT for promoting a company (see Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not). davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:29, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

Help with reviewing new page

Hi Davidwr!

Thank you for your note recently left on my profile / sandbox.

Could I please kindly ask you to review / have a look at the article that I have prepared? To my knowledge, I think it's written in a neutral way, but would appreciate further feedback. Thanks a lot, Ksils Ksils (talk) 08:56, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Flag templates

Hi Davidwr ! I write to you to see if you can help me or tell me who can. I don´t have enough technical skills to change Template:Collegesailingteam or Template:Yachtclub (that create flag icons) in order to be able to use them but changing the display text for the wikilinked article. That is, now they work like Template:Flag, and I need them to work like Template:Flagcountry, so that I could link them to specific artcicles. For example,  Yale University to link to Yale Bulldogs sailing. Thanks in advance.--Banderas (talk) 08:24, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

I'll look into it over the weekend. Reply here on Sunday evening if I haven't gotten back to you by then. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 13:50, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
@Banderas: I think I've got something working for Collegesailingteam. Check out the sandbox and testcases. You can probably crib that for Yachtclub. It's not nearly as sophisticated as the "flag" templates or "flagg" template/module set (I still haven't wrapped my head around how those work), but it doesn't need to be. It's not "smart" like cfb link, which auto-detects if the "team page for season" exists ("2010 Yale Bulldogs sailing") and if it doesn't, it defaults back to the team page ("Yale Bulldogs sailing") or, if that is missing, the school page ("Yale University"). On the other hand, since it is "dumb" you don't have to worry about hitting the WP:EXPENSIVE parser functions limit.
The magic is in the sub-templates listed on the /doc page.
Note that the /doc page examples won't look right until you switch the sandbox to the main template. You can see what the sandbox does by looking in the testcases.
If you like what you see, just copy the sandbox over to the main template. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 01:19, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
Follow-up: This revision (which I quickly reverted) shows the sandbox copied into the main template. As you can see, the burgees taken from Template:Collegesailingteam/flaglist are not click-able, and the link to the article is taken from Template:Collegesailingteam/articlelist. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 03:35, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
@Davidwr: I strongly appreciate all your work and help. I tested the changes by going back to your edit in Collegesailingteam, and found out it does not seem to work out as I looeked up the article ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship where the template is used in the list of champions, and it was not working... I really don´t know why. I keep trying to understand these mechanisms but it's way over my knowledge ! --Banderas (talk) 08:46, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
@Banderas: I was being too smart for my own good using BASEPAGENAME in the actual template to make it easy to "crib from." To fix it, I changed it to hard-code the template name.[3] Try copying the sandbox back into the main template now, it should work. It did for me. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 13:35, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
@Davidwr: Thanks again Davidwr. I'm affraid I'm taking too much of your time !. Links are working OK, but the thing is: the text shown now is always the title of the wikilinked article, that is, whenever "collegesailingteam|Yale University" template is included, you see "Yale Bulldogs sailing" (the name of the linked article). What I was trying to achieve is having the text "Yale University" (name of template) and link to "Yale Bulldogs sailing" (what is usually achieved by using | ). But I don´t want to be a pain in the neck to you. I have read everything again and again in Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template and I can not solve the problem.--Banderas (talk) 16:46, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
@Banderas: This will have to wait until later in the weekend. In the meantime, study the code and see if you can figure out how to make the passed-in parameter be the displayed parameter. Read WP:Wikilink. Basically, you want to change {} }} to something like {} }}|whatever you want displayed here, probably {} }}|{}. This is off the top of my head code, not tested. FYI, {} expands to the first parameter but it generates an error if it is missing, {}s expands to the first parameter if it exists or "nothing" if it doesn't. {} expands to the first parameter if it exists or whatever you put in place of some default here if it doesn't.
Maybe you'll have this sorted out by the time I get back on Wikipedia. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:58, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

@Davidwr: Thank you so much Davidwr ! Best regards--Banderas (talk) 18:11, 21 November 2020 (UTC) It must be something similar to {{country data {}|flagcountry/core|variant=|size=|name=}} used in Flagcountry where

 • |1= (first unnamed parameter): Use either the name of the nation or in some cases, a three-letter country code (e.g. ISO 3166-1 alpha-3)
 • |variant= or |2= (optional parameter): Specifies an alternative (historical) flag to use.
 • |size= (optional): Can be used to change the flag icon size.
 • |name= (optional): The display text of the target wikilink is usually automatically generated, but can always be over-ridden with the name parameter.

But my head is spinning around the moon right now, so I will go back to basics before I give it another try.--Banderas (talk) 18:36, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

@Banderas: Trying to understand the system of templates that make flag or the newer, module-based system that makes flagg work makes my head spin too. That's part of the reason did not base what I did on either system - it's overkill for what you need. If I understand you correctly, you need a picture, a wikilink, and text for the wikilink, nothing more. That is, you want something like this:
Yale University
which renders as
Yale University
Do I understand things correctly? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 22:27, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
@Davidwr: Yes, exactly ! As a matter of fact, I thought about going back to editing like that after encountering the problem, hahaha, but I always thought the templates could improve that editing. This is what I can not do with these templates:

I tried to understand the national flag icons templates to copy, but I just can´t.--Banderas (talk) 09:00, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

I tried to understand the national flag icons templates to copy, but I just can´t welcome to the club. Grokking quantum physics is only slightly harder .
I think your idea is best because it's the simplest - just make the whole thing what goes after the = in your template. For example, the line for Yale University might look something like this:
| Yale University =  Yale University
or, to save typing and make copy-and-paste possible:
| Yale University =  {}
I tested a mock-up with just "Yale University", "default", and "no parameter" (which produces no output), which I reverted. You can see the difference and results here. Remember, only the "Yale" and schools not listed produce valid output in this test, it's up to you to fill in the rest. Also note the use of {} for the school's name. You might not be able to use this trick for all the schools, but where you can, it saves a lot of typing because you can just "copy and paste" then do any required fix-ups. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:28, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
A question: Is the template invocation for any particular school or sailing club used more than once in Wikipedia at all, not counting the discussions you and I are having and not counting the template documentation, sandbox, and testcase pages? If not, do you anticipate there will be in the future? If not, then forget the template, just do it "in-line." You can use the substitution mechanism to have Wikipedia automatically replace existing uses with "in-line"/fully-expanded versions then delete the template (via WP:TFD once it is no longer in use.
However, if there are more than a few instances of the same school, or you think there might be in the future, then keep the template. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:33, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks again Davidwr ! I'm going to try editing what you recommend (I'm not sure I'm getting it right). Regarding the use of the templates, It's to be used in sailor's infoboxes (College and yacht club parameters), in the ICSA championship pages (6 articles), in the ICSA Hall of Fame awards, and the college sailing conferences (7 pages), at least.--Banderas (talk) 08:39, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
@Banderas: When the non-sandbox lines in the "testcases" page look right and the wikilinks are correct, then you know you've done it right. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 14:10, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
@Banderas: I *think* I fixed the only error - one of the "File:..." lines was missing a colon. Note that most of the "testcases" show in "mis-match yellow" instead of green because the sandbox version has the link as schoolname instead of just schoolname for schools without unique names. Schools with unique names do match, since the output for both the template and test cases is schoolname. Your version is superior to the sandboxed version on many levels, not the least of which is that it is easier to make changes to as teams come and go, change names, change flags, or have articles created for their sailing teams. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 01:43, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Kobenz Page

Hello,

I saw the page I created for the artist, Kobenz, got deleted. I am confused. Why was the history split declined? The artist has thousands of fans, publications in major magazines, a Google Knowledge Panel, etc. It is very confusing when googling the two separate entities. Notablepeopleandplaces (talk) 23:49, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

@Notablepeopleandplaces: The history split was declined because there is a substantially identical version in your sandbox at User:Notablepeopleandplaces/sandbox. You are free to WP:MOVE it to Draft:Kobenz (musician) if you want to collaborate with others as you work on it. Since your account is brand new - less than 4 days old or with less than 10 edits - you are unable to move pages just yet. You can either wait 3 more days before moving it or you can follow the instructions at WP:Requested moves and someone will move it for you. I would recommend AGAINST moving it into the main encyclopedia (i.e. to Kobenz (musician)) until you are reasonably sure the draft clearly shows that the page meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. See Help:About and Help:My first article for details.

Manzil (company)

Hello Davidwr,

Thank you for all your efforts on this page. it is truly appreciated. As a first-time wiki user, it's been quite the learning experience and I hope to use this newly found love to edit and create new pages. I am not paid or affiliated by the Manzil team, I am just a huge fan and thought they deserved to be recognized here in Canada. I can see how impartiality plays an important role and I have been using other Islamic and non-Islamic Fintech's wiki pages that have been accepted to guide me. I am happy to declare this but learning how to do this doesn't seem straightforward.

Also, what will it take to get the "Issues" box removed? Even more citations or other users editing the page? I've been scouring the net to find credible references to bolster the page to ensure it's more encyclopedic. Happy to continually learn from you.

M7mmmd (talk) 21:14, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

@M7mmmd: Please copy the above to the article talk page so those who look at the article will be able to find it easily. I or another editor will answer the question about the issues box after you ask it there. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 21:20, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Your checkuser request at this SPI report

Hi Davidwr! I'm just sending you a note to let you know that I declined your request for a checkuser to run the account on this SPI. You only listed an IP address as a possible sock puppet, and checkuser is not run in order to determine if an account is related to an IP address. To do so and then confirm / not confirm this would be against the Wikimedia Foundation's privacy policy and the additional restrictions placed by the checkuser policy on this project. I would essentially be outing a user by publishing and confirming their IP address, which is non-public identifiable information. ;-) Just wanted to let you know so that you were aware and that you understood. No big deal; just keep this in mind for future reference. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:27, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

@Oshwah: Thanks. I've seen IP-address-only sockpuppet investigations closed with a "no comment" with the implication of "we won't tell you if we did it or not, because OUTING."
Oh and thanks again for shutting down that TV network spammer who was editing with a revoked license. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 03:32, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
You bet; always happy to lend a hand! ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:11, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
@Oshwah: Too bad there isn't an "mass-nuke" button to quickly delete db-banned-eligible pages, or at least let you quickly review them as you block a user to make sure they are db-banned-eligible before deleting them. It would save me the trouble of tagging them.
Also, I think Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of ASIANPOPCHANNEL somehow didn't get created even though it got populated. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 04:18, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
HA! Well, there are times where we don't want to delete G5-tagged articles. Also, the category doesn't get created automatically, if I recall correctly... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:44, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

Thanks. Please revert your category deletions. By now, the category exists. Please review [[Draft:Oxford University L'Chaim Society. Thanks. Diaz Benson (talk) 02:01, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

@Diaz Benson: I recommend creating a category called Category:L'Chaim Society that can hold not only the draft if it is accepted, but also its members. The category Category:Presidents of the Oxford University L'Chaim Society is just too narrow.
Given the organization's close ties with Shmuley Boteach, consider just making the paragraph in that article into 2 or 3 paragraphs. No need to list the presidents, but it would be fine to list "prominent members." davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:24, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

@ArekSmith: If you are asking why I would support deletion of this and the other pages listed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:Cory Burkus, see that page for my answer.
As to why an administrator chose to delete some of the pages before the discussion closed, I can only assume that, for those pages, one or more Speedy deletion criteria was met and/or every revision (that is, every saved edit) of each page that was deleted page qualified for redaction under revision deletion or Oversight. As Primefac said, I am not an administrator. This means my visibility to things like deletion logs is the same as yours. Note that in some cases, particularly where oversight is used to protect privacy, the reasons why the deletion occurred may not be available to ordinary editors or even to "ordinary" administrators. Given some of the discussion on the deletion discussion page, I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case for some or all of these pages. But, since privacy issues are the major reason why you and I would not be able to see a deletion log entry (the other major reason would involve office actions, which are very unlikely to be the case here), I will never know for sure. Nor do I care to know.
I will close by saying this: If the pages WERE deleted for privacy reasons, be grateful. Oh, and welcome to Wikipedia. Despite your "rocky" start, I hope you stick around and become a productive editor. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 14:38, 5 December 2020 (UTC) Striking all of the above, as the question has been answered definitively on another editor's talk page.[7] davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:13, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
Primefac if anything I said was incorrect, or you have anything to add, please do so. Also, thanks for answering ArekSmith's question. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 14:41, 5 December 2020 (UTC) Update: Primefac, in light of my striking the comments above you can ignore this request for corrections/input or not as you see fit. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:13, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

I think you should see this. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ahmed Yusuf. I tagged with G4. 4thfile4thrank (talk) 02:05, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Allure Wigs - page deletion

Hi, I wrote about Allure Wigs in a subjective way. Please help me get the page restored, thanks. Allure Wigs (talk) 04:34, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

I accidentally put the wrong article to r2.

I accidentally put the wrong article to r2. 4thfile4thrank (talk) 13:29, 6 December 2020 (UTC) EDIT: Turns out that Draft:Ahmed Yusuf is a double redirest. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 4thfile4thrank (talkcontribs) 13:31, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

@4thfile4thrank: I pointed Draft:Ahmed Yusuf to the correct target and removed the CSD templates. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 14:31, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
@Davidwr: It is a cross-namespace redirect. It should be deleted. 4thfile4thrank (talk) 21:13, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
@4thfile4thrank: WP:CSD#R2 applies only to redirects from the main "article"-space and even then there are exceptions. Redirects from Draft:-space- or user-space drafts into the "main" encyclopedia are routinely made and kept, as are redirects from user-space into Draft:-space. These are usually from a page move, but sometimes they are from situations where someone is drafting a topic for which an article already exists. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 21:17, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
