Recent changes
- The wikis that have Growth features deployed have been part of A/B testing since deployment, in which some newcomers did not receive the new features. Now, all of the newcomers on 21 of the smallest of those wikis will be receiving the features. [1]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In 2017, the provided jQuery library was upgraded from version 1 to 3, with a compatibility layer. The migration will soon finish, to make the site load faster for everyone. If you maintain a gadget or user script, check if you have any JQMIGRATE errors and fix them, or they will break. [2][3]
- Last year, the Portuguese Wikipedia community embarked on an experiment to make log-in compulsory for editing. The impact report of this trial is ready. Moving forward, the Anti-Harassment Tools team is looking for projects that are willing to experiment with restricting IP editing on their wiki for a short-term experiment. Learn more.

DYK for Stony Island (Michigan)
[edit]On 13 September 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Stony Island (Michigan), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Stony Island (Michigan). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Stony Island (Michigan)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Ongoing discussion on Talk:Silicon Valley
[edit]Hi JPxG, hope all is well! I am reaching out because there is an important ongoing discussion at Talk:Silicon Valley#RfC: Inclusion criteria of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara Valley and Santa Clara County, California concerning whether Silicon Valley is a region or simply a monicker for the local tech industry and whether it should be regarded as such both in its article and in references to it across Wikipedia. I invite you to join the discussion and present your thoughts on the matter, as more opinions are sorely needed to build any type of understanding or consensus. Whether you agree with my arguments or not, your opinion is valuable to the discussion. Best, Cristiano Tomás (talk) 05:37, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- 45 new Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. [4]
- A majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. The Growth team has published an FAQ page about the features. This translatable FAQ covers the description of the features, how to use them, how to change the configuration, and more.
Problems
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 14 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. [5]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 September. It will be on all wikis from 16 September (calendar).
- Starting this week, Wikipedia in Italian will receive weekly software updates on Wednesdays. It used to receive the updates on Thursdays. Due to this change, bugs will be noticed and fixed sooner. [6]
- You can add language links in the sidebar in the new Vector skin again. You do this by connecting the page to a Wikidata item. The new Vector skin has moved the language links but the new language selector cannot add language links yet. [7]
- The syntax highlight tool marks up code with different colours. It now can highlight 23 new code languages. Additionally,
golang
can now be used as an alias for the Go programming language, and a specialoutput
mode has been added to show a program's output. [8][9]

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Growth features are now deployed to almost all Wikipedias. For the majority of small Wikipedias, the features are only available for experienced users, to test the features and configure them. Features will be available for newcomers starting on 20 September 2021.
- MediaWiki had a feature that would highlight local links to short articles in a different style. Each user could pick the size at which "stubs" would be highlighted. This feature was very bad for performance, and following a consultation, has been removed. [10]
- A technical change was made to the MonoBook skin to allow for easier maintenance and upkeep. This has resulted in some minor changes to HTML that make MonoBook's HTML consistent with other skins. Efforts have been made to minimize the impact on editors, but please ping Jon (WMF) on wiki or in phabricator if any problems are reported.
Problems
- There was a problem with search last week. Many search requests did not work for 2 hours because of an accidental restart of the search servers. [11]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 September. It will be on all wikis from 23 September (calendar).
- The meta=proofreadpage API has changed. The
piprop
parameter has been renamed toprpiprop
. API users should update their code to avoid unrecognized parameter warnings. Pywikibot users should upgrade to 6.6.0. [12]
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "Discussion tools" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. [13]
- The previously announced change to how you obtain tokens from the API has been delayed to September 21 because of an incompatibility with Pywikibot. Bot operators using Pywikibot can follow T291202 for progress on a fix, and should plan to upgrade to 6.6.1 when it is released.

Your edits to Tsukihime
[edit]Hello! You reverted my edits and left me a message saying "removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary". If you had actually looked at the edit summary, you would have noticed that it mentioned the talk page, where the edits were extensively explained. This sort of behaviour can be quite disruptive, so it would be appreciated if you would refrain from it. 2404:2D00:5000:841:8CD7:6427:A34C:5D4B (talk) 10:36, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- @2404:2D00:5000:841:8CD7:6427:A34C:5D4B: After I got a notification that my edit had been reverted, I checked the talk page; indeed, you'd asked a couple days earlier if anyone had an objection, so it was not a good revert in the first place and I decided to leave it alone. My apologies. I do disagree that the section is "too bloated", but I will not raise a fuss over it. jp×g 10:43, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

here's the diff: i removed content tagged as contradictory since may 2021 for the following reason: XDG Base Directory Specification is for user directories (except $XDG_DATA_DIRS); this is not about the computer's file system hierarchy as described in this article. which is absolutely true. contrary to what you said i added a comment for my edit, though very concise: not relevant which is also true. i'm sick of stupid patrollers reverting ips on a subject on which they don't know jack just because they're ips: you probably didn't even read my modification! If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. LOL 2A01:E0A:4EA:8C50:1B94:8B7C:846D:DD9E (talk) 15:51, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. Anarchyte (talk) 13:13, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
NCMEC
[edit]I "Removed line that was not supported by the reference..." and you asked me for a reference? How can I provide a reference to support the fact that a statement is not supported by its reference???? No one is criticizing the NCMEC - they are criticizing Apple.
- It was a criticism of a joint venture that both organizations went in on, and sources mention both of them (including the "screeching voices of the minority" comments). I don't think they would have gotten mentioned in every article unless there was something to justify it -- it's not like they were incidentally involved. Everyone was probably using Schrader valves to fill up their tires to drive to the press conference, but that's not mentioned, whereas NCMEC is. jp×g 07:29, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
Appreciate the response. Your misunderstanding is in believing this is a joint venture. It is not. The Center's relation to the privacy-impacting changes is in fact little more than incidental. Verizon, Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, Facebook, Twitter, Cloudflare, and hundreds of other companies run this same operation. They receive a set of CSAM hashes from NCMEC and use whatever means they decide to scan content on their system, match suspected imagery, and make reports. The Center purposefully remains at arms-length from implementation because - among other reasons - its charter and appropriation from Congress make any resulting prosecutions subject to 4th amendment issues.
Furthermore, if you need references, just look at who is being attributed for the 'plan' or 'tech' or 'updates' or 'features:'
- Apple has a new plan to curb child pornography. Here’s why it’s controversial
- Apple defends its new anti-child-abuse tech against privacy concerns
- Why Apple's child safety updates are so controversial
- Facebook's Former Security Chief Discusses Controversy Around Apple's Planned Child Safety Features
And you mention the "screeching" quote. Consider the entire thing:
Team Apple,
I wanted to share a note of encouragement to say that everyone at NCMEC is SO PROUD of each of you and the incredible decisions you have made in the name of prioritizing child protection.
It’s been invigorating for our entire team to see (and play a small role in) what you unveiled today...[1]
The Center is no stranger to controversy around the methods its partners (NGOs, for-profits, and governments) may choose to stop the creation and transfer of CSAM and it purposefully stays at arms-length. This case is no different. There is no press release and I am sure no tweets about this from the Center. It is simply providing a limited service it is federally-required to provide. And Apple has no other choice -- the org is the only one which may legally maintain a database of such content and employ people to review it.
Continuing out-of-scope and unsourced additions
[edit]Hi JPxG, and excuse me for randomly popping up on your talk page uninvited.
You recently made some changes to Kshatriya Kulavantas, reverting the same problem edits that I had also changed previously and again, reverted since. You have changed it back more than once, as have I and other editors. That same editor, or several editors, is making similar edits on Hardauna, which you have also reverted, I think.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know, that if they make the same edit again - which they are almost certain to do - I won't be restoring it again. Unfortunately, my last reversion was undone by the anti-vandal bot, so I'm not going near the page again. It's routine WP stuff, I know, but I cannot stand that: It gives me the creeps, and makes me feel like I'm the one being "deprecated" - rather than that editor's alleged "sources"! So I'm just letting you know, in the hope you will continue to notice those pages / that editor, as you have been. Sorry for the long read. Thanks. 49.177.107.107 (talk) 12:34, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, I certainly don't mind people popping in! Thanks for letting me know. I got confused for a minute when I was looking through the page history (I think I confused you with another IP address) but now I can see what you're talking about. It's messed up! I can't guarantee I will remember to keep an eye on it, but I'll do my best! jp×g 08:22, 24 September 2021 (UTC)
Jimmy McNulty
[edit]Hello, this is in response to the message you left on my talk page regarding an edit to “Jimmy McNulty”. I’m not sure why you’ve reverted the edit and asked for an explanation. I stated “deleted redundant information” as the summary of my edit. If you read the article, it would be plain to see that the paragraph I deleted repeats the content of a different paragraph and does not offer any additional info. I am going to restore my revision. 98.13.56.126 (talk) 01:59, 24 September 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, JxPG has asked me to take a look since they're still watching the series, and upon review I think I agree with your deletion, although in future it may be helpful to state why information is redundant. Hope this helps, -- Asartea Talk | Contribs 08:19, 24 September 2021 (UTC)
Hmm. This came up while I was patrolling RecentChanges; I would take a more in-depth look at the article to see what you're talking about, but I'm not finished watching The Wire, so I asked someone else to take a look it for me. If they say my revert was dumb, it was dumb, and feel free to override it. jp×g 22:09, 25 September 2021 (UTC)
