GMO rewrite

[edit]

Just wanted to pop by and say thanks for the rewrite. There often is a lot of drama-tinged language at those talk pages that I choose not to engage when actual content isn't being focused on. It's nice to see someone have the energy to try rewrites like that that can stick for the most part. Kingofaces43 (talk) 03:58, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing! We'll see what sticks... Lfstevens (talk) 04:00, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. We were working on the same article, although I removed the {{copy edit}} tag and added it to my list for the drive. I'll pick another article, but when you start to copyedit please check the history first. Thanks and all the best, Miniapolis 00:30, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nuts. I thought I removed it. Senility takes its toll. Lfstevens (talk) 00:47, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Boy, do I know what you mean :-). Have fun with it and all the best, Miniapolis 03:10, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page proposals

[edit]

Hey Lfstevens. You've made a few comments here and there showing a little frustration on some of your proposals at GMO articles not getting accepted. I know I've been chiming in relatively often in that regard, so I just wanted to let you know there's nothing personal involved. In fact, I do think your questions and proposals, even when not implemented, help strengthen the eventual revision by getting questions addressed that hadn't been covered yet.

I tend to have a bit of a hawkish eye for making sure content matches up with the actual details being portrayed in sources, so I can sometimes seem a little nitpicky on language if I'm seeing some nuance that needs adjustment. I just wanted to make sure you weren't feeling singled out and were aware of what I'm usually up to in that regard. I'm an equal opportunity scientific writing critiquer, though I thankfully (or regrettably) tend to go much easier on Wikipedia than I do in real life. Kingofaces43 (talk) 05:29, 11 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. I find the back and forth fascinating. Lfstevens (talk) 19:46, 11 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits to "Kyoto vegetables"

[edit]

Well, I'm supposed to believe these are called kyoyasai in English (I don't). I'm hoping you have a more balanced view on this article, since you are plainly not a "Japan expert" (or you would know that "JA" is a pseudo-acronym for Japan Agricult...[something unspecified]). This is one of a series of articles originating as student essays (see User_talk:Kyodaiteeter, and seems to me to be almost entirely a marketing exercise by "JA Kyoto". The ja:WP article ja:京野菜 supports this, and this Kyoto city website makes it explicit that this is a "Kyoto brand". I can't immediately find evidence of the existence even of the term itself outside this branding operation; it is not in a typical large dictionary, but would not need to be, since it consists of writing 京 (the 'Kyō' of 'Kyōto') followed by 野菜 (yasai), which simply means vegetables. So the expression is simply the Japanese for "Kyoto vegetables". Are you an expert in things like "heirloom vegetables"? Do such thing normally warrant an article for every city that has set up a corresponding marketing exercise? Is there really any encyclopedic content here? Grateful for comments (here, I'm watching). Imaginatorium (talk) 05:03, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I know exactly nothing of this subject. I was responding to a request for copyediting, which I took a shot at. I did strip out a lot of the hype in the original. WP is full of "marketing" by various actors. Goes with the territory. Lfstevens (talk) 18:41, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I just tidied up the "JA Kyoto" thing, but the whole article is a disaster really. What you just said... Imaginatorium (talk) 06:20, 11 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A cup of coffee for you!

[edit]
You are an absolute machine, tireless in your quest. A copy-editing novice like me can only do so much as gaze in awe at that ever growing list of  Completed tags and *O's. What's more, your edits seem to be invariably accurate and well thought out. It's a pleasure working alongside you to clean up Wikipedia! DubitoErgoCogitoErgoSum. 12:25, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

Remember that when adding content about health, please only use high-quality reliable sources as references. We typically use review articles, major textbooks and position statements of national or international organizations. WP:MEDHOW walks you through editing step by step. A list of resources to help edit health content can be found here. The edit box has a build in citation tool to easily format references based on the PMID or ISBN. We also provide style advice about the structure and content of medicine-related encyclopedia articles. The welcome page is another good place to learn about editing the encyclopedia. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a note. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 16:08, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. I had not realized that quoted material was there. My intent was to include the substance, but use wording and organization that would not cross that line. Obviously, if there are quotes, they should be in quotes. Given the daunting scale, do you have any tricks for identifying those bits? I'm happy to make those and any other changes that are appropriate. Lfstevens (talk) 17:50, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of Discussion of Rules for RfC on GMO food safety

[edit]

A discussion is taking place here about a proposed RfC on GMO food safety based on the five proposals made at the GMO crops talk page here. The Wordsmith and Laser brain have graciously volunteered to oversee the RfC. In addition to discussing the rules, The Wordsmith has created a proposed RfC here. This is not notice that the RfC has begun. --David Tornheim (talk)

Thanks for your work!

I've been around the GOCE long enough to suspect that you are largely responsible for the massive drop in the backlog this past month. Thanks for your tireless work! Tdslk (talk) 19:03, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. Another great batch of work. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:00, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Philosophy stuff

[edit]

Hi there Lfstevens,

I did some tentative major overhauls on the philosophy page. I noticed you had made some CE fixes on the contemporary philosophy sections (among others) and so some of those edits might have been washed away. Just wanted you to know so you can (a) review my changes, and evaluate them, and (b) go back and re-do your edits as you see fit. Thanks, CircularReason (talk) 05:53, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. Lfstevens (talk) 14:01, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the content you added to the above article, as it appears to have been copied from http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/06/21/482322571/silicon-valley-s-bloody-plant-burger-smells-tastes-and-sizzles-like-meat, a copyright web page. All content you add to Wikipedia must be written in your own words. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you think I made a mistake. — Diannaa (talk) 02:45, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to have caused a problem. I notice that the way in which you removed the content made the offending versions inaccessible. How do you do that? And can I access the deleted content? Lfstevens (talk) 07:01, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I have already revision-deleted it. I will send it to you by email. — Diannaa (talk) 07:43, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem icon Your addition to Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material, including text or images from print publications or from other websites, without an appropriate and verifiable license. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. — Diannaa (talk) 23:19, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is this really the protocol for this? I'm editing in good faith, as I think I showed last time around. Your approach means that I can't even reasonably fix the problem because I can't diff to see what you did. WP has a wonderful history function that your approach completely defeats. I'm attempting to not break copyright and willing to correct any errors in that regard. Suggestions? Lfstevens (talk) 09:38, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, it's just not practical to leave the revision deletion until later, as there's a hundred potential copyright violations to be checked every day. Also, I assumed you would remember what you added. I have temporarily undone the revision deletion so you can have a look. — Diannaa (talk) 13:07, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Since I have shown that I will correct any problems, and you leave me a message anyway, can I suggest that you not delete the revisions and let me take care of it? Can I delete my own revisions? If so, I'm happy to do that to remove the offending material from history. Lfstevens (talk) 17:39, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What you have to do is Stop adding copyright violations. Please don't do it any more, or you will be blocked from editing. Sorry, — Diannaa (talk) 20:04, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. However, my violations are inadvertent. How can I tell in advance that an edit crosses the line so that I can avoid it? Lfstevens (talk) 03:50, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just want to let you know up front that both of these recent violations were detected by our new copypatrol system, which is matching edits of a certain size with the web and reporting any matches. We do have a good copy vio detector tool but you will not be able to check your work until it's already live and on-wiki. You could certainly check your work with it after it's live, and do modifications as required. There's also the Duplication Detector, which can access some types of web pages that Earwig's tool is unable to see. If you find you've messed up and want me to revision-delete any material just let me know on my talk page or by email.

One thing I find that works for me is to read over the source material and then pretend I am verbally describing the topic to a friend in my own words. It's been suggested that not so much as three words should be together in the same order as the source. Stuff should also be presented in a different order where possible. Summarize rather than paraphrase. There's some reading material on this topic at Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing and/or have a look at the material at Purdue. Please feel free to ask me via email if you are stuck and are not sure how to effectively re-word a passage. — Diannaa (talk) 20:22, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Copy Editors September 2016 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the September 2016 GOCE newsletter.

>>> Sign up for the September Drive, already in progress! <<<

July Drive: The July drive was a roaring success. We set out to remove April, May, and June 2015 from our backlog (our 149 oldest articles), and by 23 July, we were done with those months. We added July 2015 (66 articles) and copy-edited 37 of those. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from June 2016. Well done! Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever.

August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Of the eight editors who signed up, five editors removed 11 articles from the backlog. A quiet blitz – everyone must be on vacation. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdlsk.

There is no such thing as the King of Java - princes of Mangunegaran and Pakualaman were never called kings, and specially not of Java JarrahTree 10:53, 25 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also the photograph is not of a male - the photo in commons has the dutch word for wife. Please understand that reverting corrections on the article will put you into WP:3R territory very quickly. Please have the WP:AGF to understand that corrections are there for a reason. Thanks JarrahTree 10:56, 25 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The article is gibberish. I was making the most sense of it that I could. I showed up there because a copyedit was requested long ago. I don't edit war.

Your attempts to intimidate me aside, I welcome your corrections. I do not pretend to be knowledgeable about the subject. I am happy for you to replace me as the editor who fixes the existing mess. I hope you do so. Cheers! Lfstevens (talk) 07:20, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Noting that, identifying deletion of my corrections, that quoting WP:3RR is not an attempt to intimidate but in WP:AGF with some serious personal concern that you were editing and replacing that which you claim to see to be gibberish - king of java is rubbish, and the woman in the photo is a woman not the prince!

In some cases the context of edits, maybe you might not understand the context of non english speakers attempts to create hagiographies of individual rulers. The elevated cultural context is hard to 'neutralise' at the best of times, let alone for encyclopeadiac content. Your were brave even to venture in, some non-Indonesian editors simply avoid such articles due to the cultural sensitivities. Hopefully there are not too many articles in the Indonesian project like that one. Thanks for your reply. JarrahTree 23:44, 25 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I had no idea that I was removing your corrections or that you had made corrections. I'll blame the editing software for not letting me know. If that isn't the problem, I presumptively apologize. Whatever, please continue to work to make this article better. Win win. Lfstevens (talk) 07:20, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
nah please dont apologise its a jungle out here - I hate trying to read edit histories, I always get it wrong. As for continuing in there, I dont know enough javanese or indonesian swear words to really survive myself. Thanks for your consideration anyways - cheers JarrahTree 07:28, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Hi Lfstevens, thank you for all your copyedit work, this is great. May I ask you to take a look at Ikenobō when you have a chance? Thank you again. Gryffindor (talk) 09:33, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing! I will take a look. Happy Holidays. Lfstevens (talk) 16:55, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the quality edits. I have added tags to Rokkaku-dō and Nagoya Castle. There is no rush, whenever you have time and feel like it. Thank you very much. Gryffindor (talk) 16:42, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Copy Editors December 2016 News

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors December 2016 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful!

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating!

September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words).

October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page.

Housekeeping note: we do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your Watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk.
