Use of John Wesley Photo
Dear Mike,
If it would be okay, i am going to use your photo of the Wesley memorial in a book called 'Secret Scunthorpe'. I will give full credit in the caption of the image.
all the best,

Going to Wikimania?
Hi there, wondering if you'll be at Wikimania? We'll be doing a session on Wikidata on Thursday preconference, and we'll be discussing Wikidata-driven infoboxes. Would be great to have your input/insights. Thanks! -- Fuzheado | Talk 22:21, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Fuzheado: Sorry, I'm going to the Wikidatacon later this year instead. If there's anything I can do to help remotely, please let me know! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:22, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
- Perhaps @RexxS: is going? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:23, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
- Actually, I'll be at Wikidatacon too! I was thinking something about the infobox situation in en.wp would be a good conversation there as well. Has anything been proposed? Even though you won't be at Wikimania, do you have any comments/thoughts on how things have come since last year's Wikimania, where you discussed infobox telescope? I've been experimenting with infobox artwork and person, with some success but also some pushback. -- Fuzheado | Talk 22:36, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
- Great. :-) I've proposed Wikidata:WikidataCon_2017/Submissions/Wikidata-powered_infoboxes_on_the_English_Wikipedia (co-presenters/a joint session with other infobox submissions would be welcome). Mostly, I think things have been maturing - if you look back at my presentation last year, you'll see several things I was saying were problematic (e.g. references!) that are now working - and starting to be rolled out more widely (we've gone from a few articles using infoboxes entirely from Wikidata to nearly 1,000). There's still a long way to go, though, particularly integration of editing into Wikipedia, and the open question of whether these infoboxes will be accepted Wikipedia-wide or not. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:43, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
- Look at me - I completely forgot that I saw that proposal and supported it. :) If you're game, I'm happy to go in on it with you given my experiences with infobox artwork and person, and the training I'm doing with Smithsonian on Wikidata. Thanks. -- Fuzheado | Talk 03:18, 31 July 2017 (UTC)
- Sure, sounds good. :-) I'm going to be offline for most of the day/week, so please add yourself to the proposal. :-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 07:35, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi, this edit has changed the map to the whole of the UK can this be changed back or overridden to get the local map that was there before. Thanks Keith D (talk) 01:20, 31 July 2017 (UTC)
- Personally I think it looks better with the UK map, but I've changed it back. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 07:37, 31 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, presumably overriding of wikidata by inserting the information in the template is how to get things sorted, for example location which should be West Yorkshire, England rather then England, United Kingdom. Could change wikidata by UK -> England and England -> West Yorkshire but I guess that would screw up other things. Keith D (talk) 12:25, 31 July 2017 (UTC)
- I've changed England to West Yorkshire on Wikidata. I'm less sure about UK vs England, will look into that another time (people tend to be a bit fussy about country names on Wikidata in my experience). Ideally it would be good to get the info right on Wikidata, since then that same info is used in infoboxes on other language Wikipedias. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 02:19, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Infobox observatory with two observatory codes
Hi Mike, as promised I'm steadily adding the Infobox observatory
to observatory articles. I just came across Vienna Observatory, which has quite rightly two observatory codes: 045 (after 1879) and 545 (before 1879). Unfortunately the observatory template does not correctly render the link(s) to the list of observatory codes. Instead of two separate links, only one is shown with an incorrect anchor:#045.2C_545
. Can that be fixed? Cheers, Rfassbind – talk 00:36, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Rfassbind: I've been thinking around this, and I can't come up with a good solution that will work with the Wikidata modules as they currently are. It would be possible to just show one value for now (with a working link) by setting one as the preferred value on Wikidata, but I suspect that you want to continue showing both anyway. Or I could disable the link when multiple values are returned, but it's still worth keeping the link (and an incorrect anchor doesn't stop the link to the list article overall from working).
- Ideally, I think we need to be able to do something like add a prefix and postfix for each value returned, rather than wrapping the entirity of the returned Wikidata values with the link. @RexxS: would that be possible? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:10, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thx Mike for looking into this. Agreed with above. Maybe this is obvious: obs. codes consist of 3 alphanumeric chars, always. If the length can be checked and the string split by its separator, then multiple links could be generated. Cheers, Rfassbind – talk 20:07, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
- Yes it's possible, but you can't create links by passing "[[" as a prefix to the module, because if you try to call something like <code></code>, the parser treats everything between and as a link :(
- So I've added four new parameters to Module:WikidataIB/sandbox:
|prefix=
,|postfix=
,|linkprefix=
,|linkpostfix=
. For the moment, they only work with data which is a string, a url, a Commons Media item, or an external id. - If you don't supply
|linkprefix=
, then just|prefix=
and|postfix=
are used:
→ before 045 after- Use double-quotes to enclose the parameter value if it has leading or trailing spaces (otherwise they are stripped out).
- If you supply
|linkprefix=
, then all four parameters are used and a link is made for each value like this: prefix WikidataValue1 postfix, prefix WikidataValue2 postfix, etc.
- So you can make the links you want for the section of List of observatory codes like this:

→ [List of observatory codes#045 045]- Does that make sense? Hopefully, this should be flexible enough to allow other sorts of links (Commons, etc.) to be created, as well as the ability to add a fixed piece of text before or after each Wikidata value returned. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 20:32, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
- Ooh, that looks great, thanks! Once that's moved to the main module then it can be added to the template, and this will definitely be useful in other situations as well. :-) One aside - before/after prefixes would probably need support for qualifiers of start time (P580)/end time (P582), but that's a different issue. ;-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:50, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
- Well, now the code is written, it can be more easily adapted for qualifiers, etc. Would you be willing to test-run the code from the sandbox in one or two fields of an infobox when you get a chance, please? Ask it could potentially be a breaking change (despite my best attempts to anticipate edge cases), I'd like a little bit of road-testing before I move the sandbox code to the main module. Otherwise, let me know if you want me to do the testing, and I'll try to find some time to do it later this week. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 21:04, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
- OK, it's now in Infobox Observatory [1]. Let's see how that goes, and we can implement it in telescope/astronomical survey once it's been moved out of the sandbox. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:11, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

Test: I just revised Stockholm Observatory (which also has 2 obs. code) and it works fine. Well done, thx. (PS: on a next iteration in the distant future, we might also consider the implications of multiple obs. codes on coordinates and maybe even map locations). Cheers, Rfassbind – talk 11:47, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Rfassbind: Great. :-) Maps with multiple coordinates are on my radar as they are even more relevant for the world heritage site template, I need to think about how Wikidata location map can be modified to handle them. BTW, you can specify the media caption in the infobox on Wikidata as well, see this edit. Then the entire infobox is from Wikidata. :-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:54, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

- ACTRIAL, a research experiment that restricts article creation to autoconfirmed users, will begin on September 7. It will run for six months. You can learn more about the research specifics at meta:Research:Autoconfirmed article creation trial, while Wikipedia talk:Autoconfirmed article creation trial is probably the best venue for general discussion.
- Following an RfC, WP:G13 speedy deletion criterion now applies to any page in the draftspace that has not been edited in six months. There is a bot-generated report, updated daily, to help identify potentially qualifying drafts that have not been submitted through articles for creation.
- You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
- Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.
- In your notification preferences, you can now block specific users from pinging you. This functionality will soon be available for Special:EmailUser as well.
- Applications for CheckUser and Oversight are being accepted by the Arbitration Committee until September 12. Community discussion of the candidates will begin on September 18.
