Answering your question

[edit]

Hi Patchidoopy, I saw the question you left at Porcupine. If you have more questions about editing Wikipedia, you can always ask at the Wikipedia Help Desk. To help you find answers to common questions, though, I've left you a welcome template at the top of this page. It has links to many pages with a lot of information to help you become a productive and valued editor.

Regarding your question, yes, you should always try to have a reliable source for any information you add. The problem with "common knowledge" is that it can sometimes be wrong, and people can even have conflicting ideas that they both think are "common knowledge". Some simple statements don't need sources – for example "the sky is blue" and "in some parts of the world, it snows during the winter" would probably not need sources! But if you are going to say something like "The sky is blue because..." or "Last winter, more snow fell in Edinburgh than in any winter since 1927." then you'll have to provide a source. (Oh, and I just made up that bit about Edinburgh as an example, I have no clue if it's actually true. So I guess that illustrates why we always need sources, because otherwise no one knows if it's actually true or not!) --Icarus (Hi!) 23:45, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
