Images of Romeo and Juliet in Sarajevo

[edit]

Hi !

I've just seen the images Image:Brckic and ismic dead.jpg and Image:Rjsarajevo1.jpg, and I must say that I find their copyright status a little bit dubious; what makes you say taht these images were released in the Public Domain ?

By theway I restored the image of Sniper Alley, I know that it isn't that great (it was taken from a moving vehicle of the IFOR), but it's better to illustrate the article in the most complete possible way, and if the photo is relevant to two articles, so be it...

Also, it is better to use only "thumb" when possible, because "thumb|300px" overrides user's preferences as for the size of thumbs, and it may look awfully small on big screens, or too large on small ones.

Cheers ! Rama 07:01, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I do not know about Serbian law, but in France or in the United States, now, a work is copyrighted once it is created. Mentions such as "Copyright (c) 2005 Foobar" are there to make this explicit, but are not necessary for any legal purpose. You should in fact assume that anything recent found anywhere is copyrighted under an unfree license unless it says otherwise explicitly. David.Monniaux 08:52, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I am very much afraid that David is right. Perhaps we could try to write to the families of Admira Ismić and Boško Brkić and ask them to donate of photograph of the couple, but of course, this would involve some research.
For the images of the bodies on the bridge, I fear that it will be difficult to find free images (our best chance for this might be to find French Blue Helmets who would by chance have taken photographs of the scene, but this sounds really non-trivial).
I hope that you are not too disapointed, I know that these issues can be quite frustrating sometimes. Cheers ! Rama 09:04, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hello ! Thank you for your message. I am sorry to have been the bearer of bad news, and I am happy to see that you do not get discouraged by them.
Do not worry about the article itself, only the images would be deleted in case of copyright problem. By the way, I will try to see whether something can be done using the fair use provision (but it would really be much better to have Free images, of course).
I am very much interested in the War in Bosnia, so I appreciate your efforts on the this respect. Cheers and see you around ! Rama 17:46, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello ! I have modified the information of these images to claim them as fair use, if you want to review the rational, and possibly make it more precise. This way, the copyright information should be both exact and compatible with usage on Wikipedia. Cheers ! Rama 10:30, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, really. And if you are worried about something, do not hesitate to ask me (or someone else), we'll be glad to help you to help us ! Cheers and happy holiday ! Rama 14:06, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nasi su u Maineu?! ZAISTA JESU?! Nikad ne bih vjerovao. Sto oni tamo rade? (Uglavnom smo Zidovi). Al ipak nas ima vise nego Poljaka, kojih ima preko sest sto pedeset...:) Saosjecam zbog cinjenice, sto ruski krije druge slavenske jezike sjenom...Djelomicno i zbog toga sam zapoceo uciti -- cinilo mi se nekako nepravedno sto Bugari i Poljaci su ucili ruski svi, a nasi kad govore poljski ili srpski mozes cuti moskovski "accent". --VKokielov 06:01, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Poznavao sam ovde neko vreme jednu Hrvaticu. Znaci setamo se Manhattanom, i iznenad ona mi rece: stoj. I cujemo...vas jezik! Olele. Pitam: odakle su? Ona kaze: iz Sarajeva. Odgovaram njoj: znas, ja zaboravljam da je Jugoslavija "such a big place." "Yes," kaze, "for such a small country." --VKokielov 06:12, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hvala na razgovoru. Ostat cemo u vezi, nadam se. --VKokielov 06:13, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: I don't understand...

[edit]

Hello Lana,

Is response to your inquiry, as Wikipedia is the encyclopaedia anyone can edit; it isn't really possible to avoid vandalism. The only thing possible is to watch for it, remove it and warn whoever made it that he/she will be blocked if he/she does it again. We have a volunteer organisation for that, the Counter Vandalism Unit. We use our watchlists for spotting vandalism, by clicking on the "diff" buttons, we check what changes have been made and remove them. Some dedicated anti-vandals engage in what is called RC patrol and that means checking the recent changes section for vandalism. We are usually pretty effective, but there have been times when things have gone terribly wrong. For example, once someone vandalised the page of the Norwegian Prime Minister saying that he had been in prison for rape. It took us 22 hours to notice and correct that, how many readers do you think read that false information? Currently, the most vandalised article is George W. Bush where about 70% of edits to that page are vandalism or someone removing it.

I hope this has been enlightening,

Re: Image

[edit]

Ok, best of luck with the permission hunting. Just please remember to ask for the right kind of permission. Unfortunately the "Hey, can I use this image on Wikipedia" "Sure" kind of permission is not good enough, we need explicit permission to actualy re-distribute the images under a free license. Permission to use is kinda like getting permission to use something inside your factory only (the en.wikipedia.org site is our "factory"), what we need is permission to include it in our actual product (the content we produce that is freely available (under the terms of the GFDL) for others to use, build upon or even sell, is our product). --Sherool (talk) 21:55, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Svetlana Miljkovic 14:02, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Where is this e-mail? I can't see it anywhere. Also what kind of permission did you get? Did you rely get permission to say that anyone could do anyting with the image, or did you just get permission to use it on the article. Unfortunately there is a significant difference and if you only got permission to use the image it is not free enough to be used on Wikipedia because our content need to be re-usable by other people too, not just on Wikipedia itself. If you do have theyr permission to release the image under a suitable free license please read Wikipedia:Confirmation of permission on how to log the proof of this with the foundation. Thanks. --Sherool (talk) 14:09, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see, we are talking about two different images here. The e-mail is located at Image:JZaritsky.jpg, but that image is used under a fair use claim. I was talking about Image:John zaritsky.jpg wich was tagged with a "free use for any purpose" tag. I've just deleted the unused duplicate.
Anyway regarding permission be sure to ask for the right kind of permission, regular "sure you can use the image" kind of permission is just not enough (see this e-mail on the subject. What we need is an explicit permission to make the image avaialbe for others (re-distribute) under a free license compatable with the GFDL license (must allow modification, and commercial use). Hope that clears it up. Thanks. --Sherool (talk) 15:12, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No. What you translated was completely wrong, and written in such a way that it was obviously written by someone who knows that it is wrong and is just spreading propaganda. If someone writes such things, he or she should not be on the list.
Looking through your work now however, I see that you don't follow your own advice, as you obviously have an agenda to push, and are pushing it on Wikipedia. To this date, it is not known with 100 % certainty who fired the shots, but it is greatly believed that shots came from the Serbian side. Right, if we don't know who did it, it must be those evil Serbs again. Not to mention that you implied that it is known with high certainty who fired the shots (not 100%, but maybe 90% or 80%...) while in reality there is not even 1% certainty, no one has the slightest idea who fired the shots. Re: i have a question

[edit]

Hi, your problem is that "Marjan" is the title of a disambiguation page. Your link is rendered as bold text because it is what is known as a self link, that is it refeer to the page it's on. What you need to do is come up with a new unique title for the article you want to write about the lion, I would suggest Marjan (lion) (I took the libery of changing the link from the disambiguation page to this), that is typicaly the way it's done when several things have the same name. --Sherool (talk) 22:58, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: last time....

[edit]

Hi. The logo tag is only to be used for actual logos, so the picture of the biscuit box should not be labeled as a logo. The picture does not fall into any of the obvious categories so you would have to use the {{Fairusein|article name}} tag, combined with a fair use rationale. Consider how much the image would add to the article though, fair use images should only be used if they add significantly to the article, and only if no free alternatives exist. In this case it would for example be better (if possible) to get hold of a biscuit box and take a photo of it yourself (preferably from a bit of an angle so it's not just a "copy" of the box art), maybe open it up and pile up a few biscits next to it and stuff like that.

Oh, and don't worry about "bugging" me with questions. If you find it helpfull I don't mind answering the ocational question as best as I can. --Sherool (talk) 07:09, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

how to respond to a vandal

[edit]

Sorry, but I was away from wikipedia for a few hours and just now saw your message. I see that User:Rama's Arrow already put a warning on that anonymous editor's talk page. In the future, when something like this happens, you or any other editor can warn the vandal yourself. See Wikipedia:Vandalism (shortcut is WP:VAND). The only thing that requires an admin is the actual block after multiple warnings. Once the vandal has been warned multiple times, you can post a message to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism (shortcut is WP:AIV). That page is monitored by many admins and should bring a quick response. But again, blocks are usually not done unless a vandal has already recieved 3 or 4 escalating warnings. If you have any further questions, let me know. Thanks. --rogerd 04:09, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You ran into a very uncommon and confusing problem. When you copied and pasted the image name you somehow picked up a invisible control character (most likely) (notice the %E2%80%8E stuff at the end of the red image url you inserted). Try inserting the image again, if the same thing happens place the cursur imedeately after the end of the image name and press backspace, this will erease the invisible character (you should see no difference, that is the last "g" in the filename should still be there), then try to preview again.

Oh, and by the way don't upload album covers to commons, they don't accept unfree material (fair use) there so it will just get deleted. --Sherool (talk) 06:56, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Povratak

[edit]

Boris me je duboko razočarao svojim delovanjem i on je sada istorija.

BokicaK 10:02, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have lived too long in this country. Please realize that the Croatian and (God save me) Bosnian Wikipedias aren't any less political than the Serbian. The result is a "balance of power". You needn't touch it; you can't touch it. If you could, there'd be one Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia. The fact that you are a very proud exception to the general rule of factional division -- straight out of a book -- and the fact that you have earned your right to speak -- all that doesn't change the organic need for this power balance. --VKokielov 13:23, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BokicaK 05:53, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Translation

[edit]

Hello Svetlana. Sure I can help you. But since I do not know much about this particular subject my translation verges on verbatim. You might want to "beautify" the text.

My first try is: It is unclear howlarge the proportion of Twelvers in the pakistani population is. Most approximations assume 15 percent. Twelvers are higly represented in Karatschi, Lahore, Sialkot and Jhang as well as the Northern Areas. Frequently there are fights and blodshed during the shi'ite mourning ceremonies in Muharram. Furthermore there are two ismaili fractions. The Bohras live mainly in Karatschi, the Nizari in the Nothern Areas (Gilgit and Hunza) as well as Chitral. Another group in the outermost north are the Nurbakhshi. -- PeeCee 10:38, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blog na B92

[edit]

Poz i srećna Nova godina! --Pockey 02:23, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Poz! --Pockey 14:19, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:901030428cov white.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:901030428cov white.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hello, Svetlana Miljkovic. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Cafeclimb.gif) was found at the following location: User:Svetlana Miljkovic. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 01:55, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

image permission problem

[edit]

Hi Svetlana, I replied to your response at Wikipedia:Possibly_unfree_images/2007_August_22#Image:JZaritsky.jpg - go there to see what must be done if the image is not to be deleted. Thanks, Calliopejen1 22:02, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again! The creator doesn't necessarily have to give up all their rights to the photo (which is what a public domain release is), but they do have to give permission for more than just wikipedia. Normally, the easiest license to explain is the {{cc-by-2.5}} license, which says that anyone can use your image in any way (even modifying it or using it commercially), as long as they credit you as the original author. A public domain release also works, of course, and there are a few more options available at WP:ICT#For image creators. For example letters requesting permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Calliopejen1 07:33, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And as an aside, the reason Wikipedia doesn't allow Wikipedia-only licenses is that Wikipedia's aim is to create a repository of content that can be reused freely, without any legal restrictions. So in essence the policy means that we'd rather have a gap, so someone sees it and uploads a totally free image, than an image that is restricted, and no one would think to find a new one. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Dmercury.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Dmercury.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 06:41, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

March 2010

[edit]

Please do not replace Wikipedia pages with blank content, as you did to the page Boris Malagurski. Blank pages can confuse readers, and are overall not helpful to the Wikipedia project; furthermore, blanking a page is not the same as deleting it.

If the article you blanked is a duplicate of another article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If the page has been vandalized, please revert it to the last legitimate revision. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please use the appropriate deletion process.
