Chrono Trigger Wiki

It's great to see that the creator of the Chrono Compendium is active in some other communities as well.

I'd like to get your feedback on a Wiki Guide I've been working on for Chrono Trigger: http://strategywiki.net/wiki/Chrono_Trigger (formerly featured at Wikibooks, but it has since been transwiki'd)

The two big things I've tried to do is break the walkthrough down by the name of the save game file, since there's a one to one mapping between the title of the save game file and the ending in all but two cases, and to precisely work out how the trial sequence works. (it's slightly glitchy thanks to how the interaction with the little girl works, but it's still do-able) http://strategywiki.net/wiki/Chrono_Trigger/Walkthrough/Chapter_4

I'd looked into the Chrono Compendium previously but I didn't think it would be the best place to set up a guide since the content was buried several links deep in some cases and the information on specific parts tended to have their own seperate pages rather than easy to get-at summaries of the information.

If you could provide any feedback on the completeness and accuracy of the content it would be much appreciated, or perhaps even consider it a "sister project" to your own, that would be great. I think wikis are the way to go in building complete and easily correctable game guides, and I'd really appreciate your help.--BigCow 20:31, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Alright. This has been your first FAC, right? Try not to get yourself spread too thin unless you know you can handle it. It can be kind of taxing on the mind when you've got yourself worrying over one FAC while trying to address issues on another (or a Peer Review). Fair-use

I think Chrono Trigger will make it soon, so don't worry too much. To answer your question, though, there's not really an actual set limit on how many images can be used. Generally, the idea is "no more than is necessary, and not beyond the point that they're actually relevant to illustrating the material under discussion", which is obviously subjective and not very helpful. Some people would say five images is as far as you should go, while others say ten and some say fifteen. A common compromise that I've seen is ten to thirteen.

It's usually taken on a case-by-case basis. Really, a good rule of thumb is one image of box art, two for gameplay, two or three for the plot, and an additional one or two for miscellaneous other things that are deemed relevant. Inevitably, though, we find that we have to go beyond that in order to illustrate things in a clear manner so that the reader will have some kind of understanding of what's being discussed. An article I think that could be made GA

My friends made Cloud Strife, Squall Leonhart, Tidus, Yuna, Sephiroth, and Jenova good articles. Frankly I think that's not showcasing Square's best characters. I already have plans for Terra Branford, but what I need your help specifically in is with Magus (Chrono Trigger), which I think definitely has the potential to be good. Chrono Cross and fair-use

Hey, man. Sorry I haven't helped out with that page. I wanted to, but I started getting burned out while SotC was in FAC, and then I decided I was going to do one more article before I get back to work this month. After Deckiller suggested to me that he do FFIX and I do FFVII, I began to think that if I did one last push, it should be the biggest one possible. No offense meant to Chrono Cross, of course. I like it more than FFVII to be honest, but I can't deny that Final Fantasy VII is one of the most — if not the most — groundbreaking titles in the history of video games. On top of that, it would really have more trouble getting to FA than any of these others. I couldn't resist the opportunity to attempt making gold out of such a page as my going out with a bang departure. :(

Anyway, to get to your question, these are the suggestions I have:

• Reduce the size of every image except for the battle image. Specifically, for the boxart, try to make that image no bigger than the cover actually is (smaller is, of course, preferable in the realm of fair-use). While it will be annoying to reduce the size of such fantastic images, as long as they aren't smaller than the box you put them on the article page, there shouldn't be any aesthetic issues stem from it (and you can always keep the big ones saved to your computer for personal use)
• It would probably be best to lose the Millenium and regular Japanese packaging altogether. Typically, more than one example of boxart is deemed gratuitous since you only need one to identify the subject of the article (the most recognizable version)
• The OST image will probably have to go. Typically, an OST cover outside its article namespace (in this case "Chrono Cross Oringal Soundtrack") has to provide something very easily defended. And, really, I can't say that these guys ever make covers that provide much of a defense (especially look at the Final Fantasy X piano album's cover; I don't know what the hell that's about)
• Not image related, but the line about the fates of the cast being ambiguous is worded kind of badly for that sentence. Said like that, someone might think that it meant they could have died. At the very least, we know that Serge and Kid will get married one day (you've got that interview with Kato on the Compendium, I think), so I'd just reword it to be a little more specific. I know it's hard to given the context (we don't know which version of the various characters became the dominant basis after the merge, and it's to be assumed that all of them but Serge and Kid lost their memories), but something that doesn't necessarily sound like it could mean they died would be best there.

The thumbnail sizes look okay to me. By the way, do you already know about that "Upload a new version of this file" feature on the image pages? I've been here since the beginning of the year and only just noticed that feature a couple of days ago. XD I felt rather stupid. It sure made the process of reuploading shrunken images go faster. You're welcome. You just have to make sure that if you're shrinking a PNG/JPG you upload the new one in the same format.

Style Question

I noticed on Chrono Cross that you used the small "JPN" and "NA" links rather than the flagicons. Just wondering why, since I saw that Ryu did the same thing to FF8's page just yesterday as well. I've been adding flags/release dates to games yesterday/today, and I just was wondering if the consensus was changing to use those instead of icons. Thanks! --PresN 16:16, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure if it's consensus based, but after TheEmulatorGuy made that change on Final Fantasy VII, I noticed that games with several releases had cluttered looking info boxes with all the flags. I also remembered that about a month ago, somebody was trying to add a footnote to FFVIII's infobox to indicate exactly which European countries had gotten the game because they said the European flag was misleading. With that in mind, I realized that the use of a link to PAL region was a lot more to the point and should prevent any possible confusion, so I went ahead and made the changes. This style will also allow for more flexibility when different PAL areas got different release dates. For instance, European PAL areas got FFVIII on October 27, 1999, while the PAL areas in Australasia got it two days later. That being the case, I was able to just toss the AUS link up and then place the appropriate release date beside it.

Like I say, I'm not sure if it's something consensus is moving toward, but I find it to be a lot better because it's more accurate, prevents clutter, and allows for more flexibility. Hope that clears things up. Ryu Kaze 16:33, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Frank Klepacki FAC

Hey. I thought I might give you some names of some people you could ask for help with the copyediting. Obviously Deckiller is at the top of my list, and User:Tony1 is somebody you would want to look into, but User:Steel359, User:ChrisTheDude, User:Spangineer and User:Seb Patrick are some other names that come to mind. While I don't think all of them necessarily have an interest in this kind of thing, that's actually good, because it will give you a wide pool of viewpoints to bring to the analysis. For a video game perspective, Deckiller and Steel are specifically who you want. So while they're for expertise as well as skill, the others are for variety and additional skill. • Magus has been moving up the queue fast over the last few hours. We're now at number 14 in line.
• I finished reworking the Final Fantasy IV story. Now, we just need to add references and polish it. I've added a few, and will add a few more when the time comes, but I could use your help in both.
• Someone wanted to merge/redirect the CT character articles. While I'm fine with this for all NPCs except Schala and Ozzie, Flea, and Slash, doing this for the PCs is not acceptable, as I hope that we can get most of them GA'd, and Frog's and Lucca's in particular. (and Schala's, but she's an NPC)

Final Fantasy IV bugs

Zeality,

I noticed that you modfied the FFIV article to remove the statement regarding the bugs being fixed in the European version of FFIV Advance. Do you have proof that the bugs weren't removed from the game, or was the passage removed for lack of proper citation? I have no intentions to revert your change, but I would very much like to know for my own purposes. Thank you.

Re:FFIV

Hey. I must be overlooking that Geocities reference. I can't find it in the list and I've gone over it four times. O_o Link me to it, please. By the way, I definitely don't think it would pass FA with a citation needed tag. If it's not something terribly important that's being referenced, it would be better to lose both the reference and the info than to have a citation needed tag.

Mario RPG

You gonna come by? I need some help, mainly getting sources and such. I have them at my house but I can't get there till Thanksgiving. I have to say, more than 2 inline citations in one sentence look odd to me. You still have sentences with 3 and 4 citations. I think 2 would be enough for most people. In general, the article is very nice - you certainly have a lot of experience with video games. Good job!

Games sales data / Are you familiar with the "Shrine of Data"?

I googled "Shrine of Data" when seeing a mention in Edge magazine in relation to site of the month pick vgcharts.com. It mentions in passing Shrine of Data, a site which logged Japanese sales figures. I found it and checked out archive.org, from which I found a list of top selling N64 games, of which Goemon is one. You can see the archive.org of the site here and the relevent page here. However, there aren't any mention of sources from what I gather on the website, so I don't know how accurate they are. I tried to double check by looking up sales figures in a Featured Article, Perfect Dark and then seeing if they matched. Naturally, they did, being that Perfect Dark uses the "Shrine of Data" as a source! Still, I'm not sure how much of a reliable source it is, but it might help. - Hahnchen 05:01, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Nintendo Power

Hi, I'm trying to find some information about the development of the current GCOTW, Crystalis. There is virtually no information on the web, but I noticed in the Magazine Project that you added information on issue 12 in which there is a preview of the game and in issue 14 in which the game is featured. I was more surprised that no one else had it on their watchlist, the Final Fantasy articles always get reverted pretty quickly. It's on mine now, though. You haven't played Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together by any chance have you? The Gameplay section desperately needs to be expanded, but I've only played the game for about one hour so I don't exactly feel qualified to write it. Good luck on GoldenEye 007. I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Mo Friction, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. So is the image fair use or freely licensed? I used the image in hte featured articles section of the CVG portal, see Portal:Computer and video games/Featured article. If the image is fair use it will have to be removed. Also, since you did such a great job on Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, you might be interested in the current GCOTW: Goemon's Great Adventure. Chrono series

• From what I've read, the major sticking point has been comprehensiviness, like we couldn't nominated all of the games except Chrono Trigger or something, or have them have only one featured and the rest are crap. Hi. I saw your work on getting Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon up to featured status, and thought you might be able to help me with a problem. A featured article candidate of mine, System Shock, is taking heat from User:Tony1 for its prose. Before nominating the article, I did my best to copyedit it, but my writing abilities are sub-par. Plus, since I wrote the majority of the article, my ability to copyedit it was even more limited than usual. The people I normally ask have stopped taking copyediting requests, and the League of Copyeditors has failed to respond to my request in more than two weeks. Since you were able to satisfy Tony1's prose standards with your Goemon nomination, I thought that you might be able to assist me.
