Series summary

Vietnam's Next Top Model, Cycle 1 is the first cycle of Top Model franchise to be produced in Vietnam by Vietnam Television and Multimedia JSC. The premiere was on September 30 and the season finale, in which the top 3 compete against each other on a stage, is going live on VTV3.

Like any other series, there is the host and the head judge like talk-show host and model Tyra Banks in the original franchise. The show shares the same format. At the beginning of the show, Nathan Lee and Elizabeth Thủy Tiên were criticized for competing to lead the judging panel. Nathan Lee is a male model but speaks Vietnamese quite fluently, while female supermodel Elizabeth has lived overseas for such a long time that she can't speak as well as Lee does. They were both recused after two episodes aired. The new judging members were immediately confirmed at a prominent conference, including international supermodelVũ Nguyễn Hà Anh, designer Huy Võ and former male model Đức Hải.

The season filmed entirely in Ho Chi Minh City and features 18[1] whose age is between 18 and 25 and height is 5'5" and over.[2]

The winner was 20-year-old Khiếu Thị Huyền Trang from Bắc Giang. [3] She took all the prizes, including a contract with CA Model and Talent Management for representing domestically in two years worth $50.000 and with Wilhelmina Models for representing internationally in one year, a $15.000 VIP Diamond Membership card at California Fitness & Yoga Center and be on the cover of Her World magazine. The winner also got a Piaggio Vespa LX 150, a $10.000 diamond ring from Unique Jewelries and the use of Revlon that worths over $10,000.[1]

Throughout the airing process, the show has been criticized for overtly unrealistic moments and catfights between contestants and for the judges' emphasis on Khiếu Thị Huyền Trang, who was crowned the winner and also the tallest contestant.[4][5]

I don't even know what a model should be according to the producers' concepts. This is the search for the potential models; it's not a beauty pageant in which long-legged or gorgeous ladies were praised. Moment of feelings, attitudes, where are they?

— Professional model Trang Trần[6]

The first runner-up, Tuyết Lan, and some contestants notably Đàm Thu Trang, Hoàng Oanh, Bảo Trân, Bích Trâm were discovered to serve as professional editorial models or catwalk models in the modelling industry prior to the show produced. Executive producers, however, did not disqualify them nor give any official statements, meanwhile they disqualified Miss Beach Vietnam 2008 Lâm Thu Hằng during casting weeks.[6]

After two episodes aired, the whole judging panel were replaced without clear explanations which made TV viewers much confused about what was going on. Then two judging panels commented via interviews about the cast. The latter jury complaint that they didn't have the chance to pick contestants, resulting in the weak set of cast members. In contrast, the former jury reported producers didn't allow them to choose who they would like to make the cut, so they got upset and decided to leave the show for unprofessional production.[7] To the producers, they announced to stop working with the former jury because Nathan Lee and Elizabeth competed against each other for the host position and because there were so many conflicts between judges and producers, etc.[7][8]

Many Vietnamese fashionistas showed the disappointment at the show. They confessed not to be completely inspired by any judging panels because both are not notable in Vietnamese fashion industry. Judging panels also have been criticized for few members. Guest stars or guest judges appearing seldom caused bore.[5] Notably, Huy Võ became a judge while still studying at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.[9]

Later, it was reported that the script of season finale was almost similar to that of the fourth season of Germany's Next Topmodel in 2009.[10][11]
