How to add our event on Wikimedia?

[edit]

Greetings from Dental South China International Expo,17th Dental South China Expo will be held on 7-10 March 2012.

Since we know Wikimedia is a great promoter, we are interested in displaying our expo information on your website. Could you tell me how to get our expo promoted for free? Or any other project?

Highly appreciate if you reply my question to [details removed] asap! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dental2011 (talkcontribs) 09:03, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Colorpuncture page edit- alternative view point not given space

[edit]

On this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorpuncture I put an edit in which is a reference to a biophysicist, Phd, scientist and author Dr. James Oschman who offered a compilation of research which validated the modality of colorpuncture in verifiable and empirically gathered data. I myself have been practicing the modality since 22 years. It would be basically the ONLY piece of info on that page which validates the modality, all other bits in the "reception" area are invalidations. It was not included. The invalidations come from people who are not scientists, and who have not offered the same kind of scientifically gathered data, but rather they are offering statements some of which are incorrect about the research on the effects of light in the body. For instance Fritz Popp's[1] research was also tossed out, saying it has not been verified. That's simply incorrect. The person offering that has not looked into it, because Fritz Popp's research has been accepted in Europe. If "verification" means approval by the American FDA, then the idea of verification is bogus. It seems wiwkipedia has an editorial policy about this modality. Or- what is the reason that edit is not being included? Jscboulder (talk) 12:10, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your edit and regret that you disagreed with it. You could have sent me a message or placed a note on the article's talk page. I am a scientist and a long time contributer to WP. I do not follow anybody elses's "editorial policy" (WP doesn't have one). I have encountered the work of Oschman before. As far as I can tell, he makes a living selling books (books are not peer-reviewed scientific sources) about various alternative medicine practices that have not been proved effective (or have been proved ineffective). He makes only fleeting reference to colorpuncture in his book, so I see no reason to say that he "lists it" as anything. Your edit was extremely vague and contained several terms ("dynamic systems", "body/mind", "wholeness") that I consider alternative medicine 'red flags'. Famousdog (talk) 15:51, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This discussion would be best on the article's Talk page, or if agreement cannot be reached, going to dispute resolution. But please read Wikipedia's policies on Verification (which means something different from what you are assuming) and also see WP:UNDUE and WP:FRINGE. --ColinFine (talk) 18:12, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikitable sortable

[edit]

Hello, I would like to ask Why wikitable sortable are not allow to put rowspan?Because someone told me wikitable sortable are not allowed to put "rowspan".I wanna know why.Thank you --Mitten (talk) 14:35, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because the software is not (yet?) clever enough to make it work:
Year Name Surname Height
1999 John Smith 1.85
2000 Ron Ray 1.89
Mario Bianchi 1.72
2001 Fred Example 1.75
2002 Patricia Another 1.62
Try it! -- John of Reading (talk) 15:25, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

But i Edit a film with wikitable sortable and that guy told me wikitable sortable are not allowed to put rowspam.is that my mistake?--Mitten (talk) 16:04, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, if you took a sortable Wikitable, and you added a "rowspan" parameter to it, you messed it up. It's not that big of a deal, if you understand that it messes up the table then just don't do it again. No one expects everyone to be perfect at Wikipedia, nor does anyone expect (even most people) to know the really technical stuff like this. You made a mistake. No big deal. --Jayron32 16:12, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Not allowed" in the sense of "If you try it, it will break things, so don't do it". --ColinFine (talk) 18:14, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you click on the sort buttons at the top of the example table John of Reading gave, you'll see that you get weird funny results. And it gets more messed up if you keep on hitting different sort buttons. I think when he said "Try it!" he meant try clicking on the table like a reader would do. Cloveapple (talk) 18:40, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Could somebody please check this diff?

[edit]

I'd appreciate it if somebody could look at these 2 diffs. It's the 2nd I wonder about, just including the first for context. I'm not familiar enough with what the right responses to the second edit are so I'm asking for somebody more experienced to take a look. [1] and [2]. I see that Syrthiss (talk · contribs) has reverted it and given a level 1 {{Test}} warning. You could discuss the issue at User talk:Syrthiss, perhaps? -- John of Reading (talk) 15:47, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, he or she must have done that revert after I came here to ask. Nice to see people are so fast. I've no opinion on what the response should have been, just knew one was needed. Thanks, Cloveapple (talk) 15:52, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know how I missed the revert. I see it did come before my question.Cloveapple (talk) 15:59, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This page is for questions about using Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Language reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps. You might start with Saami language (which incidentally shows that there are several different Saami (or Sami) languages, not just one). --ColinFine (talk) 18:16, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Time is off 1 hour

[edit]

The time of posting registers 14:18 but it is actually 15:18. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jvpwiki (talkcontribs) 19:22, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can adjust this by going to "My preferences", "Date and time" tab, and adjusting your time zone. This will fix the times shown on history and contributions pages. The times shown in timestamped signatures, as on this page, will continue to be shown as UTC times. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:32, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is also an option in My preferences, under the Gadgets tab, that converts the time stamps in signatures into your local time as well (see here. —Akrabbimtalk 20:38, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spoiler Option for Wikipedia

[edit]

I wanted those at Wikipedia to consider a spoiler option in the articles because time and time again I have perused an article such as Hell's Kitchen most recently where under the seasons section it immediately reveals the winner of the competition in a very open manor where someone such as myself can easily notice the said spoiler. An option to fix this is to add an easy to use spoiler drop down option which displays what is hidden by the add-on.

Confused about new articles/articles for creation/talk article etc.

[edit]

I think I may have created duplicate pages because I'm confused about the difference between simply creating a new article, creating an "article for creation," and creating a talk article. From what I can tell nothing happens with my pages and I'm not sure how to tell if they are successfully published or not. If I search for the article name in wikipedia nothing comes up so I'm uncertain how to get my articles approved. I'm also concerned that I will be blocked for creating duplicate pages. Please help. Thanks!

South American Silver Corp (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
Yes, you have posted three copies of the article - the others are at Wikipedia:Articles for creation/South American Silver Corp. and Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/South American Silver Corp.. That's easily fixed - please don't worry about that!
However, this Google search tells me that you may be the "Investor Relations and Administration Assistant" for the corporation. This is a problem, because Wikipedia articles about companies are not usually written by representatives of those companies, but by independent volunteer editors working from news reports and such like. I suggest you read through the FAQ page for organisations, which explains the issues much better than I can do it here.
I suspect that the article will be deleted, I'm afraid, because it does not explain how the company is notable enough to have a place in an encyclopedia. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:18, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Here are links to the three locations you are referring to:
  1. South American Silver Corp
  2. Wikipedia:Articles for creation/South American Silver Corp.
  3. Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/South American Silver Corp.
The first one is the typical mainspace location, where articles normally reside. It looks like you created this article correctly, though I haven't examined it based on our policies of inclusion. The second one is an optional location for users who want to start working on an article but don't want it to be "official" yet, so that it can have a chance to improve before coming under more intense scrutiny. The third location is meant for a discussion of the article - see Help:Using talk pages.
Don't be worried about being blocked; we have a policy to assume good faith so someone with good intentions isn't punished.
You can also find pages you have worked on by using the user contributions page - there is a link up in the top right corner called "My contributions". I hope I was able to answer some of your questions. —Akrabbimtalk 20:24, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't listing on a stock exchange such as Toronto a credible claim of importance sufficient to survive an A7 speedy? – ukexpat (talk) 20:31, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think the duplicate in Articles for Creation makes a speedy justifiable, though maybe it should have been under housekeeping rationale. —Akrabbimtalk 20:36, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, we've never held that a mere exchange listing (not even the NYSE) is not in any way an assertion of notability. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:10, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe not notability, but importance? Calmer Waters 02:21, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia knows of no such thing: see Wikipedia:ImportanceAkrabbimtalk 12:41, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the helpful information. I see that the main page has been deleted. I understand that being a publicily listed company doesn't necessarily equal notability, but South American Silver Corp has gained recognition for having one of the largest known undeveloped silver and indium resources - and in particular for having such a large resource of primary indium. As the resource is located in Bolivia, the company also received additional attention recently due to the political climate there. I cited various independant sources for this article. Any thoughts on whether that would deem the company notable enough for an article to stand? Would it help if I highlighted these factors more clearly and prominently in the article? Again, I appreciate the tips/guidelines. Dvbyrne (talk) 16:43, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"You Can Ask for It To Be Created" info

[edit]

I seached for a recording artist by name and got the following reply:

You can ask for it to be created, but consider checking the search results below to see whether the topic is already covered.

I then clicked on the "You can ask for it to be created" link but when it opened there was no area to request the info on the artist to be created, who to ask, anything at all.

So HOW do you ask someone to create the article, press info, bio, etc of an artist ?

His name is Gary Delz and he is a Texas resident if anyone wants to do the article I guess ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.234.21.36 (talk) 21:27, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The link goes to Wikipedia:Articles for creation which says: "If you have an idea for the title of an article, but no content for the article itself, please see Requested articles." Follow the link, find the right section for the topic, and click "edit" to the right of the section heading. However, there are thousands of requests and few volunteers working on them.
If you want to write suggested content for the article and can satisfy Wikipedia:Notability (music) then you have a better chance. Start by clicking the big "Create an article now!" at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:44, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

changing language

[edit]

hello there,

I want to to know how can I translate an article in my language and add it on the left list which contains all the languages in which the article has been translated..

any help would be appreciated, thanks :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tigersonification (talkcontribs) 22:11, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See the links under WP:EIW#Translate, and Help:Interlanguage links. See the List of Wikipedias to find the one in your language. On that wiki there may be pages that explain how to translate articles from other Wikipedias, especially from the large ones such as the English Wikipedia. --Teratornis (talk) 22:17, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are also WikiProjects here on the English Wikipedia for many countries of the world. See the WikiProjects for the country or countries where your language predominates. There you should find other editors who have probably translated some articles from English, who can advise you how to help. --Teratornis (talk) 22:21, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

language

[edit]

I am interested in reading an article I found on the German Wik but need it in English. Is there any way to do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.215.170.167 (talk) 22:30, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is only possible, if an equivalent article exists on the english Wikipedia. If this is the case, then there should be a link (usually on the left side of the page) where it says "In anderen Sprachen". Click on "Englisch" and you should get to the english equivalent of the German article. If this is not possible, you can try entering the url of the article into Google translator. County categories on highway pages

[edit]

When editing pages on state highways, should I add the categories of the counties that the road passes through, such as in Farm to Market Road 59? Theking17825 23:39, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Try asking your question at Wikipedia talk:Categorization. The editors watching that page will be more likely to give you a good answer. Ryan Vesey contribs 01:54, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, thanks Theking17825 02:16, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First True Native Americans.........

[edit]

The First True Native Americans are a State recognized tribe. We were recognized by the state of Louisiana since 1989. It was presented to the house of Representatives by Congressman Charles Dewitt. I have the legal documentation if you would like to see it. Your site list us as a unrecognized tribe. I have removed this once already. But it was put back on again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wayscot1 (talkcontribs) 23:53, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, this is not "your (our) site"; it is a wiki that is upkept by thousands and thousands of people of practically every background on this planet.
Second, this is an issue to be brought up on the talk page of the article in question. There you will find the editors who regularly watch and edit that article.
Generally, the way to affect change on this site is to provide reliable sources that support your argument. Without citing sources, you are likely to have your work reverted.Happy editing, hajatvrc with WikiLove @ 00:01, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
