Link to specific section of an article
[edit]Say I want to not just put double hooks around a word or phrase to make it a link, but rather link to a specific section of another article, or a different artikle, like the one about Tibet history, instead of just the Tibet article. Jack Atley
[edit]Why cant the page about me be removed from Wikipedia.
I have expressly told you that this is highly stressful for me.
It is inaccurate, wrong, out of date and damaging to my professional career - which has nothing at all to do with photography or race car driving - and I have kindly asked that Wikipedia remove it, on multiple ocassions.
THIS IS A PAGE ABOUT ME. NO ONE ELSE. NO ONE ELSE HAS TO LIVE WITH THIS. I DO. Yet others seem to care and keep replacing this page.
And despite me asking a number of times to delete this page and going through various channels asking for this, the page is exactly the same as what it has been.
WHY DOES THIS CONTINUE TO HAPPEN when I am crying out to you to constantly to remove it? Why does the fact I tell you this is highly stressful for me fall on deaf ears?

- (edit conflict) Jackatley, I assume this is about the page Jack Atley. There was a discussion about whether the article should be deleted here, which concluded that the page should be kept, though some poorly sourced statements had to be removed. I fail to see how the page as it exists is problematic in any way, but I am ready to assume the subject is truly hurt by its existence.
- Your reason for deleting the page seems to boil down to "I do not want this page to exist or be found in Google", which is not quite enough. You being hurt by the page's existence is no grounds to delete it (long story short, the Wikimedia Foundation (the organization that handles Wikipedia) is located in the US, and see Freedom of speech in the United States). If you have specific reasons to think the page intrudes on privacy, or makes false claims, by all means say so and we will see what can be done, but Wikipedia has plenty of unflattering pages about living people and they do not get deleted just because the subject is unpleased. You call 8 years later ...'suddenly'? You have answered both the request and your own question in one sentence. The fact is, this page was created 8 years ago and, as it has now been calmly explained many times, the page is no longer relevant. That is the reason for seeking deletion. Jack Atley is not a photographer and has not been one for a number of years. Which, therefore, also means the page does now impact on his privacy. Which, as you state is another reason for deletion. Wikipedia is constantly advising how it seeks accurate information. Yet when it is provided, you seem intent on keeping information which is 8 years our of date and inaccurate up. Further, although, as you say, you 'fail to see how this is problematic', the fact remains, it is because it is inaccurate and misleading personally and professionally. So to go back to your initial question: why after 8 years should this page suddenly be removed, the answer is because 8 years is not sudden.
Name Change

I am finally starting to manage my career tools, and I've noticed that my Wikipedia page (the first page to show up when googled) displays my name incorrectly! I haven't used a middle initial in my name for 35 years, so I'd like to remove it, but after reading the editing instructions, I can't seem to figure out how...! Can you help?

- Hi Danjenkins309. First let me say, thank you for bringing this here rather than trying to fix it yourself. Which is discouraged at Wikipedia and seen as a conflict of interest. In looking at why your name appears this way, the protocol must yield to what is most commonly found by reliable sources to date. For instance: at your IDBD Daniel H Jenkins Page you'll see that your middle initial is represented. Furthermore, within the listed works up until 2013, your middle is present. This is perhaps where the mistake has occured. However, your website shows the contrary. Since IBDB is not a reliable source; let me assemble reviews, interviews, and articles that support your claim: Daniel Jenkins. On quick review, the LP of "Big River" states: "Daniel Jenkins" and that was from 1985. This does help your claim; and will make the search easy. - Upon further review: I thought the page was set up correctly for the benefit of your name: "Redirect" tag at the top of the page, both names are represented, etc. However, the links (and online sources) prove that your current name is: "Daniel Jenkins" supported by WP:COMMONNAME. I will move the page so that it titles: "Daniel Jenkins" with the lede stating "Daniel H. Jenkins". In addition, as I said, the page is poorly represented of your work; and is terribly structured and worded. I will go in and update and fix. I hope this helps. How to use Sandbox for new draft when it is redirected with a submitted article pending review?
[edit]Hello! This is no doubt a bit stupid so sorry in advance. I drafted an article in my sandbox. I then submitted it for consideration which meant that my Sandbox page is redirected. The article is now pending and has been for a while. I would like to start working on something else in my Sandbox (which is redirected to a draft article page) while keeping the draft up for review. How do I use the Sandbox without deleting the article which is submitted or interfering with the redirect? Thanks. - @ECURBEC: When hitting a redirect, click "(Redirected from ...)" at top of the page to get to the redirecting page where you can replace the redirect code with other content. You can also create a draft page directly, for example via Wikipedia:Article wizard, or make multiple sandboxes, for example User:ECURBEC/sandbox2, User:ECURBEC/sandbox3, User:ECURBEC/sandbox4, ... Why I won't give a penny to Wikipedia
[edit]First of all, try and contact them. You can't give feedback or ask a question except here and this will be gone in no time at all.
Second, they have people volunteering to monitor Wikipedia. Maybe some of them are good, but the ones I've dealt with are downright nasty. They think cause they can ban you that they have all the power in the world.
I couldn't care less if Wikipedia shut down, something else will take it's place soon enough.
They don't want anything to do with you. They only time they care about you is when they want money. I'll let the other schmucks give money, they'll get none from me.

- Wikipedia is run by the non-proft Wikimedia Foundation. Editors are volunteers, also at this help desk. A small part of editors are administrators and can block users. Questions stay here for around four days and are then publicly archived. You didn't actually ask a question but posts are rarely removed and I guess yours will stay. The top of this page has a search box for the archives and a link to them: Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives. Your current IP adress has no other edits so I don't know what you have encountered. - You should not create or edit articles about yourself -- see WP:COI.
- Wikipedia is not the place to promote yourself, your website, your career, or anything else.
- New articles should cite multiple professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources that are specifically about the subject but not affiliated with it. Otherwise the subject is not notable. Ian.thomson (talk) 16:16, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Thejoeplumb! and welcome to Wikipedia! Your work is very impressive and I applaud you for the changes you're making to help people through your music. To be seen as "notable" for inclusion in an article at WP under your category, one would have to meet criteria found here WP:MUSICBIO: Notability Music guidelines. I see that on your website it says you won the "Diana Memorial Award", but there are no links on that page to back this claim. Furthermore, a quick google search does not link your name with the Award. Could you perhaps supply this information as a starter? Second, since you are a recording artist in the UK, are there any online sources (magazines, newspapers, articles) that mention you as such? This would also be helpful. Third, (and please don't take this wrong) you are still young; but have a very prosperous career in front of you. If you keep doing what you're doing; some one will notice, and write an article about you here at WP. That's how it's done. So, keep up the good work, and have faith! - Hi @Thejoeplumb, Writing an article for Wikipedia is harder than many people realize. Even professional writers find that the format and style needed for a good encyclopedia article are different than what might be appropriate for other venues. You could:
- Get someone else to do it—If your only goal is to make sure that an article is added to Wikipedia, you can request that someone write an article on the subject.
- Start by editing other articles—If you are interested in becoming an editor at Wikipedia, our experience demonstrates that it is better to start by improving existing articles, which will help you get a sense of how this place works, and then you will be ready to write your first article from scratch. A good place to visit is the Wikipedia backlog, where there are literally hundreds of thousands of articles needing help from editors. Find an article in a subject area you know, and add a source, or a reference, or simply help write it better.
- Go ahead and try—If you do decide to write an article immediately, please read our policy on conflicts of interest, then read our guide to writing your first article, which will repeat some of the good advice above. Then please use the Article wizard, which will help you through the steps. I urge you to accept the option to save your first draft in your user subpage, which will reduce the chance your work will be deleted before it is ready.

- Hey Margalob. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that questionable and self published sources may be used as sources on themselves, so long as the information it supports are fairly mundane details that are unlikely to be either overly self serving or controversial. - Who is 'they' in your scenario? If you mean the game designers or the company that releases the game, then the answer should be 'no'. If you're asking if the Wikipedia volunteer editors who write the articles often add the ESRB rating, then yes, that would be included during the writing if they add it. †dismas†|(talk) 18:02, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

- "I heard on Facebook" does not meet our reliable sourcing standards, though the site you link to (which is not Facebook) probably does qualify. It is possible to write an article about a video game without including the rating, especially if the rating comes long after. - Okay, let me step in. As someone who works in the video game related areas of Wikipedia, no, we don't usually add ESRB ratings. I'll have to dig to find out the exact rationale or guideline, but the short version is that we don't do it. Sergecross73 msg me 20:05, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

can't find my page

- Hello Susansellers. The only record I found of a previous page about Cenegenics was from May, when User:Cenegenics/sandbox was deleted as unambiguous advertising or promotion. There does not appear to have been a page created last Friday. It seems that whatever you did on Friday did not end up saved on Wikipedia, I'm afraid. - @Susansellers: Last Friday you uploaded a file to commons:File:Cenegenics Wikipedia Draft (July2017)-updated.pdf. It was deleted as out of project scope for Wikimedia Commons where it was uploaded. Deleted Commons files can only be viewed by Commons administrators so I don't know what it contained. Here at the English Wikipedia we do not allow pdf files as articles. We have our own wikitext language which enables editors to edit the same page. You can create a wikitext draft via Wikipedia:Articles for creation. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:25, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
interwiki categories

I've noticed many categories to other languages are unexistant whereas they exist in other languages though. Example:[[Category:People from Vendôme]] does not refer to [[fr:Catégorie:Naissance à Vendôme]] and many many others. Can someone please explain to me in detail how to proceed in order to create such intralinks ? Please keep in mind I'm not a native English speaker . - @LouisAlain: Categories can have Wikidata items and they work just like articles. See Help:Interlanguage links. Category:People from Vendôme and fr:Catégorie:Naissance à Vendôme are both in a Wikidata item but not the same. That complicates matters. The latter category is apparently only for people born in Vendôme while the former is less strict. Wikidata requires a one-to-one correspondence between pages. The Russian Wikipedia has two separate categories, one in each Wikidata item. That makes it problematic to merge the two Wikidata items. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:36, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

Picture edits
[edit]I am currently editing the page 'Justin Mortimer' and I am looking to insert a picture of him, but I cannot find any information/tips and advice that will tell me how to insert a picture as well as the regulations that need to be checked before providing pictures on to an article

- If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add

to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacingFile name.jpg
with the actual file name of the image, andCaption text

Author of a reference amending misrepresentation of his work

On Highland Clearances we have seen some recent edits by Caberguy which correct a misrepresentation of the content of a reference. The user is the author of that reference. He states he is a new user, so whilst I am trying to be welcoming, I am also vaguely aware of rules about an author self-promoting their own work. It is clear to me that the edit is not self-promotion and the edit, from an article-content point of view, seems entirely appropriate to me. However, should I be pointing this new user at the rules on what edits an author of a reference used in an article can make regarding the relevant part of the article? - In general I would say that when a user is not adding his or her own book (or site, or whatever) but is correcting a use someone else made of it, The presumption should be that the edits are not promotional, although it never hurts to check them out. look similar, and I see no reason to change it to the inappropriately capitalized "ILL-equipped". English words are not written in all caps outside special contexts.
