Report Someone

[edit]
WP:NOTHERE ranting

A idiot on here is removing my added information on the soundtracks to Popeye and Pete's Dragon, when i have a reliable source link attached and i don't appreciate it one bit. If those links aren't reliable then Wikipedia needs to be shut down! This pisses me off and i'm about to go postal with foul language on this person. Chadergeist82 (talk) 03:10, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chadergeist82: Sites with user generated content, such as at Discogs is not reliable source. See WP:RS for more information on that, and also WP:CIVIL. RudolfRed (talk) 03:24, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's stupid! Wikipedia is nuts! Youns can all stick it, cause i QUIT doing any edits! To me...Discogs is reliable and proof! It shows that what i said is real and right in your face, that it exists! SMDH! Also, quit putting dates as Day, Month and Year...that is RETARDED! It is Month, Day and Year...Learn it! SMDHAgain! I doubt i will log back in ever again, so your dumb replies will be a waste of all of your time and energy. Bye! Chadergeist82 (talk) 04:53, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Umm - isn’t Pete trying to flee someone who is threatening to punish him severely? WP:SNARK TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 03:33, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Would it be possible to link "Flag of New Spain" in the infobox of Spanish West Florida to Cross of Burgundy since it's a red link? Thanks! 145.118.225.237 (talk) 08:32, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've fixed the redlink to go to Flag of New Spain, from where a reader could go to Cross of Burgundy too. Thanks for reporting! Best, CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 09:03, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings,

2 problems - Would you please be able to fix ref number 114 on this page - I cannot. Please also add in the book's "ISBN" number which I could not get. Leave in the quote please. Also, ref number 116 should have the two pages (29 and 30) clearly listed in the correct way. Please fix this too if you have time. Sorry. Thanks. 175.38.42.62 (talk) 12:06, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can fix it yourself. Sungodtemple (talk) 14:36, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed the first one ColinFine (talk) 15:50, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And the second one done.
Sungodtemple: old-timers here recognise this editor, who does valuable work on families and other topics associated with Leeds, but seems unable to recognise or fix formatting errors or spelling mistakes, even when they are pointed out; so we have stopped giving answers such as yours, and just fix them when we have the time. ColinFine (talk) 15:57, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
ColinFine, the editor (who rarely uses their user ID) recognizes the results of their own formatting errors, but rarely if ever reverts the latter. They previously blamed their "device" for this inability to find and fix formatting errors, but was curiously reluctant to say what the device was. (The device I'm using right now is nine years old and I presume would have a resale value close to zero, but it still manages to display formatting errors very clearly.) And as for value of the work, I often have difficulty understanding how such detail about miscellaneous Luptons and Middletons is of encyclopedic status. -- Hoary (talk) 02:36, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I still stand by my suggestion that they are using some sort of visual aid software per our discussion at your talk page some time back. The often-used "it's in red" phrase, as if they can't read or transcribe it correctly and the 'phonetic' spelling of usernames leads me to this conclusion. Eagleash (talk) 22:50, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That is a good point, Eagleash. -- Hoary (talk) 09:10, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine, @Hoary I have also seen this editor ask for help in the Help boards for years. I started to wonder if the inordinate attention on the Lupton and Middleton articles is really worth all of that effort. I suppose it gives the OP some purpose, so I shouldn't criticize. I wonder if these articles will ever be done, but that's often true.... Kudos to those who are helping the OP. David10244 (talk) 04:42, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New editor creating a new article for an actor.

[edit]

Hi Team,

I am a new editor and i want to create a wikipedia page for a South Indian actor who acted in a several Tamil movies. need guide lines and more information to create it. Kavya Gowri Kg (talk) 13:22, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think Help:Your first article would be a good place to start! Welcome! DonIago (talk) 13:24, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kavya Gowri Kg The most important guideline for creating any article (note: not page) is the General Notability Guidelines. That describes what you need to demonstrate to show that the topic of the article is notable by Wikipedia's definition. There is a subject-specific page for actors: WP:NACTOR, which should be viewed as a supplement to the GNG. If you are convinced this actor meets the notability requirements the next step is to gather sources that discuss the actor's life and career. You need to make sure the sources are:
  1. Reliable by Wikipedia's definition. This page has a color-coded list of sources by generally-accepted reliability. Here (about half way down that page) is a guide to sources specifically about Indian cinema. Here are some evaluations of the reliability of sources grouped by country.
  2. independant of the topic of article. So, you would want to avoid the actor's webpage, the studio's publicity materials, press releases, etc. Also, oddly, interviews with the actor are frowned upon because they are not independent.
  3. Significant coverage - in other words, you want sources that are about him, and that go into some depth about his life or career. Not sources that are about the movies he was in that just mention him in passing, but sources that are really about HIM.
Once you have at least 3 such sources, you are ready to begin drafting your article. Your first article is a good place for pointers on how to do that. Also, looking at some of the featured articles and good articles about Indian Cinema can help you know what an ideal article should look like.
Good luck! ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 13:35, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Kavya Gowri Kg You said " i want to create a wikipedia page for a South Indian actor"; Wikipedia has articles, not pages. Those articles are not for the benefit of the subject in any way. There may be benefits but those are on the side and not our goal.
If you represent this actor, the Terms of Use require that you make a formal disclosure, see WP:PAID. 331dot (talk) 14:04, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to the good advice that others have given you, I would suggest that trying to create a new article as a new editor is like picking a violin, never having had a lesson on it, and trying to give a public recital. It is likely to bring you frustration and disappointment, and may ending wasting your time and other people's. I strongly suggest putting that aside for a few months while you learn how Wikipedia works by making small improvements to existing articles - remembering that everything in Wikipedia should be traceable to a reliable published source. ColinFine (talk) 16:14, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So how do i learn to create an article? Also how to identify the independent source to apply it while i create an article? Kavya Gowri Kg (talk) 03:16, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kavya Gowri Kg: Let's do this is the proper order. First, create your user page by clicking on the red link that is currently your user name. On that user page, declare your paid relationship with the subject: see WP:PAID. Next, find published sources about the subject. You probably already have multiple sources, so check each of them against the criteria we apply to see if they help establish notability. Look at WP:CSMN to see why many sources fail this test. If you cannot find a few good sources, then stop: it is WP:TOOSOON for this subject to have an article: come back in a year and check again. Do not attempt to create the article if you cannot find such sources. We will delete the article. We delete more than 100 articles every day: yours will not survive and you will have wasted your time and ours. If you can find at least three good sources, read a few Wikipedia articles about similar subjects (actors) to see what your article should look like. Finally, proceed to WP:YFA to see how to actually create your article. -Arch dude (talk) 03:38, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi thanks for the detailed explanation, i am bit confused on the source.. would you mind helping me out.
i will share you few source links, so can you please help me in verifying that this sources are applicable?
https://www.vanitha.in/celluloid/movies/jai-bala-actor-special-story.html
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/jai-bala/movies?from=mdr

@Kavya Gowri Kg::
  • Filmibeat and Times of India are both too short to cite.
  • DT Next says very little, at best, about him.
  • No comment on the Vanitha source (I can't assess it - automated translation + South Asian languages = word salad).
This help? —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 04:07, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for reviewing, i will definitely work on this and find a strong source about the actor and then i will start creating an article, its very helpful. Kavya Gowri Kg (talk) 04:15, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Concensus not got due despite RfC

[edit]

15 days ago, I opened an RfC to find a concensus which hasn't yet been got (and parts haven't been discussing for a while). What do I do next to get the concensus? Dr Salvus 19:00, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just for context, is it this one? Madeline (part of me) 20:10, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Dr Salvus 20:49, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus: Read WP:RFC, which explains that an RfC is usually closed by an uninvolved user after 30 days has elapsed, or after the discussion has died down and consensus (or lack thereof) is clear. If you think the discussion is closable, you can request a close at WP:RFCC. Isabelle 🏳‍🌈 02:39, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(dead?) reference redirects to homepage

[edit]

Reference 13 on Sagat Singh now redirects to the website's homepage. I ran WP:IABOT on it, and instead of marking it is dead, it added a link of the archive of the homepage which contains nothing relevant, which I think is a false positive. What should I do in the article now? CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 19:26, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it's because Internet Archive had never archived it before, so it made its best guess at archiving it's redirect to the home page (see [1]). No idea why the bot decided to use the archive link to the homepage, probably to avoid extra redirects.
I did a quick google search of the title in the that cite and found [2], which appears likely to be the identical page. I'd say if you concur, you should update the reference to use that URL (which does have a successful archive by IA). Skynxnex (talk) 21:51, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
