- 1914 – Zaian War: Zaian Berber tribesmen routed French forces in Morocco at the Battle of El Herri.
- 1940 – Walt Disney's Fantasia, the first commercial film shown in stereophonic sound, premiered at The Broadway Theatre in New York City.
- 1966 – The Israeli military conducted a large cross-border assault on the Jordanian-controlled West Bank village of Samu in response to an al-Fatah land mine incident two days earlier.
- 1974 – In Amityville, New York, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed the other six members of his family, later inspiring the book The Amityville Horror and subsequent film series.
- 1982 – South Korean boxer Kim Duk-koo suffered fatal brain injuries during a match with American Ray Mancini near Las Vegas' Caesars Palace, leading to significant rule changes in the sport.
- 1985 – The volcano Nevado del Ruiz erupted, causing a volcanic mudslide that buried the town of Armero, Colombia, and killed approximately 23,000 people.
- 2015 – At least 137 people were killed and 368 injured during terrorist attacks in Paris.

- 1002 – King Æthelred II (pictured) ordered the massacre of all Danes in England.
- 1642 – First English Civil War: The Royalist army engaged the much larger Parliamentarian army at the Battle of Turnham Green near Turnham Green, Middlesex.
- 1927 – The Holland Tunnel, connecting Manhattan with Jersey City, New Jersey, under the Hudson River, opened.
- 1992 – The High Court of Australia ruled in Dietrich v The Queen that although there is no absolute right to have publicly funded counsel, in most circumstances a judge should grant any request for an adjournment or stay when an accused is unrepresented.
- 2007 – An explosion hit the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City, the Philippines, killing Congressman Wahab Akbar and at least four others.
