Too big

It's great that Underlying lk and others have reactivated and updated this page, but it's now massive, and slow to open in my modest netbook I think the time has come to split it; preferably into at least 4 or 5 parts. Hi Andy, I understand the issue but I'm against the idea for two reasons: first, having everything on the same page makes it easier to find the infobox you're looking for by just using the browser's search function, which makes it a lot easier to maintain the list since for now it has to be updated manually; second, the page is large indeed but not exceptionally so, there are mainspace articles of a similar size like 2013 in film for example. I'm using a very old computer as my main desktop and it does takes a while to load, but weighed against the benefit of keeping everything on the same page I think it's better to leave it as it is.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 23:54, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps I was insufficiently clear; the page is virtually unusable to me (and thus others). The existence of other pages of problematic length does not justify this one (nor vice versa), and that page should be split also. The html for the page is 773KB, so delivery will depend on the speed of one's connection, but it's comparable to an article with a lot of pictures. However the cached version of the page only takes about 200 ms to serve, so the problem will come in editing and especially in previewing those edits. The decision to transclude subpages which may be individually edited is sensible and a good work-around. Let's hope that has alleviated the problem for most editors. Incidentally, I dropped the contents into a text-editor and cleaned up, then imported into a spreadsheet so that I could get a total. Leaving aside the 141,726 Infobox3cols and 1,834,632 Infobox which shouldn't appear in articles, there are an impressive 3,005,913 transclusions in the list. It's possible that some are transcluded into other infoboxes, but it's an upper bound for the number of articles containing infoboxes. --RexxS (talk) 23:50, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Deletion proposals

Now that the page has been subdivided, it's much easier to use and edit - thank you. As a consequence, I've begun to propose redundant and under-used templates for deletion or merger. Bare use of infobox base template

Some articles use {{Infobox}} directly. While that's not prohibited, of course, there's often a more suitable template to use, such as in this edit.

Would it be worth adding a tracking category (if possible) or running a script to list all the articles where this happens?

@Pigsonthewing: It would be useful, but how would a similar list be created? The API doesn't distinguish between directly embedded templates and those called by a wrapper, and the same goes for tracking categories.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 20:34, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Many are suitable for conversion to infoboxes proper, and some are simply frames for images. Please feel free to strike through items in that list if you convert them (or if you check and nothing needs to be done; in which case, please leave a comment there also). Need for general academic / professor infobox

There seems to be a need for an infobox for "academic" or "professor"; see the infobox for scientist, used at George M. Church, and ask, what infobox could one use, that would have would similar content (institutions, thesis, students, major works, etc.) for a non-science academic scholar such as C.S. Lewis? Suggest new infobox for "travelling fair", based on Template:Infobox_circus

Hi,

Was looking for an infobox to include on a page for a travelling steam fair. Can't see anything for funfair, or carnival, nor steam within the current categories listed.

Request / suggest template based on Template:Infobox_circus, with the following additional values, named Template:Infobox_travelling_fair or carnival or similar;

| fair_name = would replace "circus_name"; name of fair

| associates = name of partners, other associates to the fair

| rides = to replace "acts" and give a count of rides available (helps gauge size)

| non-rides = attractions that are present but not rides; food stands, toilets, amusement machines etc.

| home base co-ord = Home base of operations, where maintenance / over-winter storage maintained etc.


Values that can be removed if Template:Infobox_circus is used as base template;

| tent =

| number =

| acts =

| circus_name =


Any thoughts?

An infobox template for 'actor'?

Dear fellow editors,
Does anyone else think it strange that there isn't an Infobox template specifically for actors/actresses, since there are so many of them, and in different genres? There already is a template for musical artist, so why not one for actor? Just a thought...

I use infobox person, also for musical artists and composers, - it's well developed and documented. Many people are more than one thing, - why limit? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:16, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for your prompt reply, and nice to hear from you again.
Of course, the status quo ante is fine. Equally so, there are many actors who are not notable for anything else than their acting. In my simple mind, it wasn't about 'limiting', but about 'recognising'. Also, I still find it very strange that there is an Infobox template for chef, musical artist, but not for actor, despite the almost absurd granularity for sports persons.

Please forgive me for not being able to explain it better. By providing a dedicated infobox, we are giving recognition to professions such as chef, or astronaut, but not to actor, even though we already have dancer or musical artist who also appear on stage and in films. It seems somewhat illogical to me. Thank you for your patient desire to understand what I meant.

Officeholder infobox

I have created a number of infoboxes using this template, as well as adding information to other political infoboxes. Particularly for 19th century Virginia politicians, political affiliations often changed, especially due to the short-lived nature of some political parties (like the Know Nothing Party before the American Civil War and the Readjuster Party after it). The commonly-used Officeholder template does not accept multiple political parties, generating error messages if I try party1, party2, etc. I managed to list multiple parties using a "br" in articles such as last month's concerning Chester D. Hubbard. That method, however, does not show the relevant dates, which would facilitate navigation as well as understanding of these minor parties. The problem is common in 19th century Virginia political figures, and becomes more acute in the case of articles such as Alexander H. H. Stuart, on which I worked today.Jweaver28 (talk) 00:59, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Infobox for geographic region?

Is there an infobox for a geographic region or area? For an example of a page that could use such a template, see Empty_diagonal.
