Future national multi-events

[edit]

With the success of the recent Wicnics in different cities, I was thinking that we should pursue more national multi-events, maybe on a quarterly basis (Wikipedia:Meetup/US, anyone?). We already have Wiknic for the summer, and Wikipedia Day in January for the winter. For the fall, perhaps we could do a series of microconferences at public libraries anchored by a shared TedX-like keynote simulcast...--Pharos (talk) 21:38, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I like the idea of a Library/GLAM multi-events of some sort (Local museums are another option then libraries). It would be really good to have editathons where we could draw in some new people in addition to the experienced editors at these locations and workshop together! (With something else exciting of course), Sadads (talk) 23:17, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe no US meetup in 2012 since it will conflict with Wikimania in Washington D.C. in July. Chicago is centralized and has the capacity to host us. Maybe have two national events in Chicago and San Francisco simultaneously twice a year? Marcus Qwertyus 00:19, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I kind of prefer a series of smaller local meetups that are more or less simultaneous. The major advantage with that approach is that we can better accommodate our more casual contributors or curious n00bs who might not want to devote the time and money into traveling to another city. - Jredmond (talk) 03:17, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Our readers might not be aware of local meetups because they aren't usually advertised unless they are a Wiknic or Wikipedia anniversary. It is also good for editors to meet other people occasionally. Marcus Qwertyus 15:11, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
ooh, library micro-events! Sign me up! The Berkeley Public Library's on me! Ijon (talk) 20:10, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fall might be a better time to do events with universities or schools, since it'll be near the start of the academic year. - Jredmond (talk) 03:17, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Check it out, and improve: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Libraries :)--Pharos (talk) 17:18, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Join Wikipedia Loves Libraries with a local wiki-event in October!

[edit]

With the recent smashing success of the Geat American Wiknic in June, we'd like to invite you to join the exciting sequel: Wikipedia Loves Libraries. Please add your ideas for a local librarycentric wiki-event to the national page :)--Pharos (talk) 02:12, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Help plan an event for your city in January at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Day/United States. This is sort of like the Wiknic, but indoors and with more cake!--Pharos (talk) 07:29, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mid-summer?

[edit]

June 23 is MID summer? Who knew?! 66.105.218.10 (talk) 05:57, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, see the Midsummer article :)--Pharos (talk) 05:59, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
what thu...?! that's the craziest thing i've ever heard!
that page should do a much better job explaining why the first 3 days of ANYTHING are considered "mid". there's a bit of discussion on the Talk page, but it's hardly satisfying.
back in THIS article, i think it should use "start of summer" or "solstice" or something less ambiguous. i cannot imagine many people in the populace writ large know the "real" definition of midsummer. certainly every business up my way uses it to mean LATE JULY or EARLY AUGUST. 66.105.218.38 (talk) 22:10, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I for one consider late July and all of August to be late summer and May early summer...and this questioning may be the craziest thing I've ever heard. Bob the WikipediaN (talkcontribs) 14:54, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, now you're just pulling my leg. May isn't "summer" by ANYONE's definition!
Besides the official definition(s), I would assume that most people center "summer" around SCHOOL VACATIONS. Meaning mid- or late-June to early- or mid-Sept for most of us. How can 23 June be "mid-summer" when school isn't even OUT yet?! 66.105.218.18 (talk) 21:27, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have a suggestion for you. Head to your nearest Wiknic this Saturday and find some Wikipedians to debate the meaning and proper usage of "Midsummer" with. We love geeking out about that kind of thing, and clearly you do too! Dominic·t 21:35, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'd love to, but I have MIDTERMS that day! :P 66.105.218.21 (talk) 05:11, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I hate to ruin the party, but the primary definition of "midsummer" is INDEED, "middle of summer":

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/midsummer
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/midsummer

The "solstice" one (and the St. John's one 3 days later) is secondary. Pharos almost had me there for a while!

I have made the appropriate change. I will take up the matter in detail over on the midsummer page. 66.105.218.21 (talk) 08:38, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About the date

[edit]

Would people PULLLLEASE stop trying to slip "midsummer" into this article. It is, at best, ambiguous, and at worst, incorrect. Unless the picnic has been moved to August 10th, it is NOT "midsummer".

Also, I changed the phrase "weekend before the 4th of July" to "week or two before..." b/c the example given (23 June) simply DIDN'T MATCH. Was the original description incorrect or was this year's wiknic indeed originally slated for June 30th (the "weekend before")?

To which I must question the line about Turing's Centennial being a "happy coincidence". If the 23rd was chosen instead of the intended 30th, well then, what was the reason? It strikes me as plausible that the 23rd was chosen specifically to make it land on Turing. Anyone know? 66.105.218.16 (talk) 20:12, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Spam Magnet!!

[edit]

OK, I'm curious. Why is it that THIS talk page attracts every random mispost of the interwebs?! I don't recall this happening very often on any other wikipage, but here in Wiknic central, we're getting at least one a day!

What gives? 66.105.218.24 (talk) 05:37, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The photo y'all are to promote this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wiknic_Boston_group_of_six_people_June_23_2012.jpg) isn't from a Wiknic, but from last year’s Global reddit Meetup Day. I know because I'm in it. So . . . maybe you shouldn't be using it for this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.76.80.139 (talk) 00:56, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Note that the 2012 Boston Wiknic and the 2012 Boston Reddit meetup were apparently held at the same time about 240 ft apart (according to Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Wiknic/2012 and http://redditgifts.com/meetups/rboston-picnic---saturday-623-boston/). Anomie 10:54, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's a good thing if Wikipedians and Redditors mingle! I've re-added the SF photo at the top.--Pharos (talk) 19:18, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

2013 date: June 22?

[edit]

I'd like to propose that we designate "Saturday, June 22 and nearby dates" as the default Wiknic date, in keeping with the summer solstice tradition.--Pharos (talk) 16:07, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Meet up in Richmond, VA?

[edit]

There's a wiknic listed for Richmond, but the link goes to the meetup in DC. Is there actually going to be a meetup in Richmond? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.53.45.83 (talk) 23:06, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Richmond Wiknic meetup was proposed in the past, but neither the proposer nor anyone else has followed through. If you would like to organize something in Richmond, however, it is not yet too late!--Pharos (talk) 19:15, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Supermoon 22 and 23 of the Month

[edit]

This is fun, and it happens to coincide with the so-called Supermoon that we're going to have. Some of the local Wiki editors who frequent Facebook are planning on doing an overnight Wikinic in the Mojave Desert, if anyone is interested. Post a comment to my Talk page if you want details on that. Damotclese (talk) 18:46, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds fun, though I'm much too far away to attend! It would be cool to create a wiki event page before the event, or if privacy is a concern since this is an overnight thing, after.--Pharos (talk) 19:26, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is a problem, safety of strangers gathering for an overnighter is not to be taken lightly, yeah. I expect it would be safer to gather with Facebook people, people one knows at least a little bit. :) Damotclese (talk) 19:35, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
