Template:Chinese name Zhang Linpeng (Chinese: 张琳芃; pinyin: Zhāng Línpéng; born 9 May 1989 in Jinan, Shandong) is a Chinese footballer who currently plays for Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League. He is known by the nickname Zhangmos (Chinese: 张莫斯) in China for his similarity in looks and playing style as Sergio Ramos. An offensive minded defender, Zhang is also known for his tackling ability and aerial game.[1] He was highly praised by Italian manager Marcello Lippi who described him as "the best Chinese footballer in the Chinese Super League".[2][3]

Club career

A highly promising youngster, Zhang Linpeng quickly attracted the interests of the Genbao Football Academy where he graduated into the club's senior team Shanghai East Asia at the beginning of the 2006 league season. With the club in the third tier, Zhang quickly made an impression within the team when he was part of the squad that won promotion to the second tier at the end of the 2007 league season.[4] Within the second tier, Zhang played a major part in ensuring the club remained in the division and by the 2009 Chinese League One season, the club finished fourth and just missed out on premotion.[5] His performance for his club then saw him receive an unexpected call-up to the Chinese national team where he impressed many by scoring within his debut against Jordan. This then saw Zhang become the most sought after player within China before he transferred to top tier Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande for a fee of ¥12,000,000 in November 2010.[6] With Guangzhou, he went on to make his league debut against Dalian Shide on 2 April 2011 in a 1-0 victory.[7] Throughout the season, Zhang was used as a squad player as Guangzhou won their first ever league title at the end of the 2012 season. He earned the starting role at right back during the 2012 season.

International career

Zhang quickly worked his way up through the various Chinese youth teams first by playing for the Chinese under-20 national team in the AFC U-19 Championship in 2008, where he captained the team to the quarter-finals.[8] This saw him promoted to the Chinese under-23 national team to play in the 2009 East Asian Games, where China disappointingly were knocked out in the group stages.[9] Despite the Chinese team's failures, Zhang Linpeng's performances were considered good enough for the Chinese head coach Gao Hongbo to unexpectedly call him up to the senior team even though he was playing for a second-tier club. He made an impressive international debut in a friendly against Jordan on 30 December 2009 when he scored in his debut in a game that China drew 2-2.[10] After his debut, Zhang was called up to the squad that won the 2010 East Asian Football Championship before establishing himself as a regular within the team that took part in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup.
