Battle of Romania
The Battle of Romania in World War II comprised several operations in or around Romania in 1944, as part of the Eastern Front. The Red Army launched two offensives against combined German-Romanian defenses in an attempt to reclaim the Moldavian SSR and open a way into the Balkans:
- The First Jassy-Kishinev Offensive between April 8 and June 6, which ended in failure as the Axis forces successfully resisted the invasion.[1]
- The Second Jassy-Kishinev Offensive between August 20 and August 29, which ended with a Soviet victory.[2]
During the second offensive, Romania switched sides, thus allegedly shortening the war by six months.[3] The German Sixth Army was encircled and destroyed for the second time, while the severely weakened Eighth Army retreated to Hungary.
