The Greek Amputee Football Association (Greek: Ελληνική Ένωση Ακρωτηριασμένων Ποδοσφαιριστών, Elliniki Enosi Akrotiriasmenon Podosfairiston) is the Greek governing body of amputee football and represents Greece at international events and competitions.[1][2] The association was founded with the support of EAFF.[3] In February 2016, Amputee Football Greece became the 14th European national team.[4][5]
History
The following players participated in the first national amputee football camp which was held at Sofiko city of Corinth, Greece in conjunction to EAFF[6][7][8] in June 2016: (GK) Alexandros Theodoridis, Dimitris Vouvopoulos, (DF) Tasos Tsigas, Georgios Lazaridis, Vasilis Mpakogiannis, (MF) Nikolaos Papakyrgiakis, Ioannis Vasiadis, Dimitris Agrianitis and (FW) Nikolaos Papaggelis. The unofficial adapted training games against AEK Futsal were the first-ever friendly encounters for the newly formed team. These friendlies took place at Anthousa city of Pallini, Greece.[9][10] The national side participated in a charity tournament against Olympiacos soccer school staff and Greece homeless team on 8 January 2017; to raise poverty awareness and offer as many food supplies as possible to homeless people.[11][12][13] Greece participated in the Amputee Football Cup for the first time on 24 June 2017. The team competed against Japan and Poland in the opening day of the international friendly cup and faced France on the following day, losing in all three occasions.[14][15][16] The national side played a friendly game against Greece Euro 2004 Legends on 10 September 2017.[17] Greece participated in the European Championship for the first time in their history on 3 October 2017.[18] The Greeks won their first ever friendly cup at Bruge on 21 October 2018.[19][20] Greece finished tenth in the 2021 edition of the European amputee football championship.[21] In January 2022, the team obtained the Gazzetta Fair Play award after receiving 55,273 online votes by the fans.[22]
