Grove Road Primary School is a Primary School located in Tring, Hertfordshire, England and is one of the four state junior schools in Tring, the others being, Bishop Wood CE Junior School, Dundale Primary and Nursery School, and Goldfield Infants and Nursery School. The headteacher is Sharon Sanderson. Currently there are 408 pupils at Grove Road.[2]

Grove Road (or Grove Road JMI as it was then) opened for the summer term of 1973 it had 32 pupils, 2 teachers (Miss Smith and Miss Newton), a headteacher (Mr Gordon Hollingsworth) and a secretary. In 1976 a separate infant school was built and Miss Moira Hegarty was appointed head. When she retired in 1991, Hertfordshire Education Authority decided to amalgamate the two schools. The process took two and a half years and in January 1993, the junior and infant schools closed and Grove Road Primary School opened. Alterations to the buildings and the completion of "the link", a small corridor built out of plastic linking the two sections of the school were finished five minutes before the Director of Education arrived for the official opening ceremony on 10 February 1993.[3]

Academic standards[edit]

In May 2006 Grove Road was visited by 3 OFSTED inspectors, they reported Grove Road as being a Grade 2 School.[4] The Grove Road 2007 Key Stage 2 SATs results were well above those achieved by schools nationally. The progress made by students from Year 3 to Year 6 were also significantly greater than the national average.[5]

Subject  % of Year 6 students attaining level 4 or higher  % of Year 6 students attaining level 5
English 97% 51%
Mathematics 95% 61%
Science 97% 68%

Grove Road has over the years been given many different awards. Two of the most recent and most notable[citation needed] are the grant of healthy schools status and the Activemark 2007 for Rewarding Commitment.[6]
