Procreate is a raster graphics editor app for digital painting developed and published by Savage Interactive for iOS and iPadOS. [4] It was launched on the App Store (iOS) in 2011.[5][6]

Currently, in version 5.2, Procreate for iPad was first released in 2011 by Tasmanian software company Savage Interactive. After winning an Apple Design Award in June 2013, Savage launched Procreate 2 in conjunction with iOS 7, adding 4K file support, continuous auto-save, and customisable brushes.[7]

In 2016, Procreate became one of the top ten best-selling iPad apps on the App Store.[8] It rose into the top two in 2017,[9] and became the overall best-selling iPad app in 2018.[10] It is regularly featured in Apple Inc.'s product launches.[11][12][13]

Procreate Pocket

Featuring a stripped-back interface, Procreate Pocket was released to the App Store in December 2014.[14] Pocket originally included most tools found in Procreate; however, as Procreate accumulated additional features through multiple updates over the following years, Pocket fell behind.

In 2018, Savage launched Procreate Pocket 2.0, which brought the iPhone version of the app back to feature parity with the iPad version.[15] In December 2018 Procreate Pocket received Apple's "App of the Year" award.[16][17]

Notable users

Users of Procreate include comics artist and DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee, who has used it to sketch Batman and the Joker.[18] British fine artist David Hockney created a series of landscape paintings using Procreate.[19] Kyle Lambert, a poster artist notable for creating the Stranger Things poster in Procreate,[20] is also known for his viral Procreate finger-painting of Morgan Freeman.[21] Artist James Jean uses Procreate for film poster work, as with his poster for Blade Runner 2049.[22] Art Director for Ubisoft and Electronic Arts, Raphael Lacoste, uses Procreate for studies.[23] Concept artist Doug Chiang creates robot, vehicle, and creature designs for Star Wars in Procreate.[24] John Dyer, the English landscape painter, used Procreate as part of the "Last Chance to Paint" project, a partnership with the Eden Project that sent Dyer to stay with the Yaminawá in the Amazon rainforest, where he painted the experience.[25] LA-based artist and illustrator Michael C. Hsiung uses Procreate for his “Digital Originals” print editions. Professional artists have also used Procreate to create the posters for Stranger Things,[26] Logan,[27] and Blade Runner 2049,[28] as well as several covers for The New Yorker.[29][30] It has also been adopted by fine artists,[31] tattoo artists,[32] and creatives at Marvel Comics, DC Comics,[33] Disney Animation, and Pixar.[34]
