R Cable y Telecomunicaciones Galicia, S.A. is a Spanish telecommunications company that offers fixed and mobile telephone, television and Broadband Internet services to businesses and consumers in Galicia, Spain.
R was established in 1998, as a result of the adjudication of a contest to deploy wire in Galicia, Spain. This contest was a consequence of the liberalization of the telecommunication industry.
At stake in the contest were three territorial demarcations: A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and the rest of Galicia. The three demarcations were all won by R, which was then named Galician Group of Companies for the Wire, Group Wire SA (a group of two companies that merged when the demarcations were later consolidated administratively).
During 2006 R expanded its geographic operations, beginning to offer direct access services in some small places of Galicia such as Monforte de Lemos, Sarria, Sada, O Porriño and A Laracha. R also established agreements with other municipal councils like Xove, Burela, Vilalba, Ribadeo and Viveiro.
The services of R are available today for more than 820,000 houses and companies in several cities, villas and residential areas in Galicia region.
R offers broadband Internet, fixed telephony, mobile and television. Its television service distributes more than 100 channels to customers that possess its decoder signal. This service also includes a pay-per-view system called Oriel, from which customers can purchase films, sports programming and television series. It also offers around two dozen channels in signal for those customers that do not have of a reception system signal. However, R also distributes in the channels of the TDT and some forty television channels for those customers who have a cable reception system (DVB-C).
R offers various Internet speeds for individual clients: 100/5 MEGAs, 50/5 MEGAs, 15/1,5 MEGAs, 10/1 MEGAs and 3Mbit/s/300kbit/s. R was the first operator in Spain to offer the 100 MEGAs broadly.
On November 20, 2007, coinciding with the eighth anniversary of the company, R launched a mobile telephony service as a MVNO, using the network of antennas of another company. The service went live on December 3, 2007, after a period of testing with 500 customers. To date R has some 190,000 customers with this service.
R has had over 25 shareholding changes throughout its history. One of the most important changes took place in September 2008; Caixanova, NCG Banco's predecessor, took control of the cable operator when they bought the 35.44% held by Union Fenosa (once that it was bought by Natural Gas) with what the box happened to have 66.24% to ensure his stability.
The current shares of R is held by the British private equity firm CVC Capital Partners (70%) and Spanish bank NCG Banco (30%).
In April 2010, CVC Capital Partners decided to invest in the Galician operator with a participation of 35%. Later that year, in November, CVC expanded its participation to 70% in an agreement in which the current shareholders looked for "to guarantee the future of the Galicia City of the project, keeping its current social headquarters". CVC Capital Partners, the private equity firm, has reached an agreement with NCG Banco to acquire the 30% stake in Spanish cable operator R Cable. CVC Capital Partners will then hold a 100% stake in the telecommunications operator.
